The Crystal Apple Awards Program improves community awareness of the quality of education in Central Wisconsin by recognizing and rewarding educators who use innovative teaching methods that meet the challenges of today’s classroom. 2014 marked the 12th annual event, in which 24 Teachers of Distinction were recognized for their excellence in education. Four of those educators were selected as Crystal Apple Award recipients.
2014 Crystal Apple Teachers
Youth ApprenticeshipWisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship program is a part of a statewide School-to-Career initiative. In 2014, 30 area high school students received hands-on learning, along with related classroom instruction, in the following occupational areas of interest: Agriculture, Engineering, Finance, Health Science, Hospital & Tourism, Information Technology, Manufacturing Transportation, and Welding.
Ten high school seniors from Marshfield and Spencer schools explored a variety of health care career options through Health Career Connections. These students were able to make informed career decisions thanks to these participating businesses: Bents Chiropractic, Bethel Center, Colonial Center, Companion Day Services, Dental Clinic of Marshfield, Golden LivingCenter-Three Oaks, Mabeus Dental Office, Marshfield Clinic, Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, ShopKo Pharmacy, Stoney River Assisted Living & Memory Care, and Walgreen’s Pharmacy.
Over 600 middle school students from Marshfield, Auburndale, and Pittsville participated in the 3rd Annual North Central WI “Heavy Metal Tour.” These students and educators toured several businesses to learn more about the companies located in the Marshfield area. This partnership between educators and the business community gave businesses the chance to showcase their facilities and workforce opportunities while exposing students to a variety of industry career options.
The Reality StoreOver 500 middle school students from Auburndale, Columbus Catholic, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Pittsville, Marshfield Spencer, Immanuel Lutheran, and Trinity Lutheran schools were presented with the challenge of balancing a monthly budget during the 2014 Reality Stores.
Students were assigned an income and family scenario and learned to calculate their net monthly income from a gross salary. With their budget in hand, they visited the store to arrange for housing, utilities, transportation, childcare, and groceries – basically, all the monthly expenses a household faces. The students learned how quickly expenses add up, and students began to understand the importance of education and career choices. Thanks to the 50 business volunteers who helped bring this hands-on-learning experience to area eighth graders.

Networking Opportunities
PROGRAMS & EVENTS: Workshops, recognition, networking & fundraising.
• Twelve BusinessAfter5’s “laid the framework” for 4,000 people, providing them with the opportunity to network in social settings while connecting them with others and helping their business grow.
• The WorkingWomen’sWednesday program has grown in a “flash” providing over 500 women with professional networking opportunities and leaving them motivated and inspired to make a difference in their lives.

• “Picture yourself” part of the annual golf outing ChamperCaper, where nearly 200 business people conduct “business on the green”. Or maybe bowling is your “thing”. MACCI’s Business Bowl offers an afternoon of networking and teambuilding that 120 professionals enjoy at this “themed” event. “New” in 2014 was the “Glow Walk” that encouraged healthy living with this evening stroll.
• MACCI Ambassadors “illustrate” the perfect example of our community. Hosting 17 ribbon cuttings, one groundbreaking, and assisting at 12 Business After 5 events, our “red coats” also conducted “goodwill calls”, and volunteered as greeters at all MACCI events.
Professional Growth Opportunities
MACCI’s professional growth programs throughout the year “focus” on providing its members with professional training and “setting” the tone for networking opportunities to help grow businesses and retain your workforce. Java Jump Start workships offered were, “Healthy Eating on a Busy Schedule, Common Myths and Misconceptions, Sugar Blues, Fitting Fitness into Your Life, Social Media, Morality Clauses and More, Application for Marketing Your Business Online, and The Importance of Key Words.” Through the BuildingBlockstoSuccess training, we were able to offer “Building Positive Attitudes in the Workplace, Dealing with Difficult People, Marketing 101, and The Harder I Work, the Behinder I Get.” MACCI also partnered with Dale Carnegie training in offering one 8-week series.
MACCI’s LeadershipMarshfield program graduated its 22nd class with 28 participants. This program continues to help “frame” Marshfield’s future leaders through informative monthly programs. Tammy Meissner was recognized as the 2014 Leadership Marshfield Alumnus of the Year.
Recognition Events
• Wickersham Jewelry was honored as MACCI’s 2014 SmallBusinessoftheYear.
• MACCI honored Wheelers Chevrolet GMC as its 2014 FirmoftheYear.
• Thirty-five businesses celebrated milestone anniversaries, from 5 to 110 years of doing business in the greater Marshfield area.
ADVOCACY: Communications, issue education and government relations.
Serving as the voice and policy advocate of its business members was the purpose of MACCI in 2014. This was accomplished by informing and educating members on local, state and federal issues impacting their businesses. Fostering and maintaining regular communications between government and business, and when necessary taking action to support pro-business policies and creating a business friendly environment.
Forums:Through committees such as Business & Governmental Affairs, a full portfolio of key information for business and industry was presented. Focusing on: • The spring elections by providing critical information on
School Board and local city and county candidates.• New health care laws and the steps employers need
to take to be ready for open enrollment were provided through an Affordable Care Act update.
• Through two seminars, experts provided vital information on business succession planning and new tax rules and regulations on tangible property.
The late year portfolio included detailed coverage of the fall elections with:• The Get to Know the Candidate interviews.• Information on How to Run for Local Office was updated to
encourage more candidates for elected office.• Through the joint efforts of the BGA and Agri-business
committees - members were updated on Wood County’s regulatory considerations related to Waste Irrigation.
• Through an Energy Roundtable, members were able to learn critical energy policy insights from representatives of the American Petroleum Institute and the Wisconsin Petroleum Council.
Programs:
• Keeping Marshfield’s transportation needs in focus was accomplished by seeking business input on state transportation investment policies through a local forum. Providing policy development insight through the Transportation Development Authority’s State Capital Drive-in and the TDA’s Annual Meeting. Air travel improvements were sought through participation in the Central Wisconsin Airport’s SEATS Committee.
• “Business Day” in Madison provided members a valuable opportunity to meet with Wisconsin legislators and officials to discuss state issues impacting local business, learn about critical national and international issues from renowned experts and concluded with an address by Governor Scott Walker.
• Advocacy efforts continued by partnering with central Wisconsin chambers, municipalities and institutions of higher learning through CENTERGY to hold the “Central WI Days”. A legislative visit to the state capitol, where critical central Wisconsin issues were discussed with government officials.
Visits:• MACCI also provided membership with direct access
to federal officials to discuss national policy issues. In addition to monthly business visits with representatives from US Senator Ron Johnson and US Representative Sean Duffy’s office, Senator Johnson held a State of the Nation presentation and a question and answer session exclusively for members.
• Members were offered the opportunity to meet then Attorney General candidate Brad Schimel.
• MACCI continued to be your source for access to Wisconsin officials. Whether it was attending listening sessions by Representative Bob Kulp or roundtable discussions with department secretaries from the Dept. of Workforce Development, Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection and Dept. of Natural Resources – members had the chance to frame their questions and issues for those officials.
MACCI looks forward to continuing its efforts to focus on serving as the voice and policy advocate of its business members as we continue to develop Portraits for Success!
