Holy Spirit Happenings… Registration
If you have not registered your child(ren) for the 2020-21 school year, please consider doing so as soon as
possible. This will help with staffing and budgeting for next year.
Tuition Assistance grants
Tuition Assistance grants are given out every year from the Father Fuller Endowment for Tuition
Assistance. Tuition Assistance grants are available yearly and are handled in complete confidentiality. These
grants are meant for families who fall above the WPCP income limits, but may still need some assistance to
provide a Catholic education for their child(ren). Financial reasons should not be a reason to not return to Holy
Spirit. If you want a Catholic education for your child(ren), our goal is to make that happen for our families.
Tuition Assistance Application 2020-21...applications are due March 31, 2020
Middle School Football for 2020-21 school year
Some of you may not be aware but Appleton Pop Warner will not be offering 6th and 7th grade tackle football
this year (they haven’t offered 8th grade for a few years now). If middle school boys or girls are interested in
playing tackle football in the fall of 2020, we’ve had students play with St. Mary Catholic Middle School football
program in the past or play with the Xavier Middle School football program.
New to this year, Xavier Middle School has done a co-op with FVL schools for their 8th grade football program
and is now expanding it down to 6th and 7th grade and inviting area Catholic schools an opportunity to join
these teams. They will be offering 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade teams with Fox Valley area Catholic and
Lutheran schools called the Fox Valley Saints. There will be a parent meeting on March 17 or March 19 at 6:30
pm to learn more about this opportunity. See the flyer for more details.
Heart Challenge & PUDD Day- Way to Go Mr. Van Grinsven & students!
Dear Jon Van Grinsven - HSCS:
On behalf of the American Heart Association, thank you very much for your school’s donation of *$1091.24 from
your school's recent Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) event. Your efforts make a tremendous impact and help
millions of Americans through increased awareness of cardiovascular disease, lifesaving scientific research and
critically needed education efforts.
Once all donations are processed, and if your school qualifies, a US Games certificate will be sent via email
and/or your direct contribution will be mailed as a check to the school. These give-backs will arrive in 3-4 weeks
and we hope they enhance the wellness education efforts within your classroom and school with our sincerest
thanks.
Warm regards,
Nancy Brown
Chief Executive Officer, American Heart Association
Claim a Private School Tuition Tax Deduction
Private school parents can benefit from Wisconsin’s K-12 tuition tax deduction by simply completing a one-
page form with their 2019 state tax filing. This is a state tax deduction that was won by WCRIS for private K-12
school parents across the state. A simple form can help families deduct up to $4,000 for K-8 tuition and
$10,000 for 9-12 tuition on their state income taxes.

can turn on your email notifications to get low hot lunch balance reminders, check grades or attendance, etc.
Lunch Volunteers
We need daily lunch volunteers from about 11:15-12:55. Please click on the following link if you can help us
out. Volunteers must be VIRTUS trained and have a completed background check on file.
Knight News moving forward
Starting March 4th, we will be doing a trial to have the Knight News sent out every other week (March 4, March
18, April 1, etc.). This was agreed upon in the Education Committee meeting in February. Many times we feel
the Knight News is repetitive and sometimes we all get busy and don’t read it. So, in an effort to give you only
the important information you will need, we are going to try this. Please contact the school office if you have
any questions.

Dear Holy Spirit Families,
Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. We started this
very important church season with an all school mass this
morning. The entire school attended and received ashes on their
foreheads.
In these upcoming 40 days, we will journey together to prepare for the greatest sacrifice
& gift of all, the death and resurrection of Jesus. The 3 areas that we are asked to focus
more on in our lives during Lent are: prayer, fasting & almsgiving (time, talent &
treasure).
The staff and students at Holy Spirit School will be participating in a variety of activities
throughout Lent to focus on these things in their classrooms and together as a school
community. Ask your child(ren) about things they are doing in the classroom:)
Some of the all school celebrations are listed below. You are welcome to join us!
Lenten Prayer Service, March 6th at 8:05 AM (Led by 8th grade - In Gym)
Stations of the Cross, March 20th at 10:30 AM (Led by 1st grade - In Church)
Last Supper Play, April 9th at 10:15 AM (Presented by 2nd grade - In Gym)
Living Stations of the Cross, April 9th at 2:15 PM (Presented by 4th & 5th
grades - In Church)
Our school Lenten Service Project will be a food drive for St. Joe’s Food Pantry. The
pantry shelves start to get very bare at this time of year. Throughout the month of
March, leading up to PUDD Day on March 27th, we will work together to help restock the
pantry shelves. Please see the attached information about items needed. Thanks in
advance for your donations!!
Your oldest child will be bringing home 2 different calendar/coloring type sheets
listing activities/things which focus on prayer, fasting & almsgiving that you can do at
home as a family during Lent. Please pick and choose any of these activities that will help
your family’s Lenten journey. They do not need to be done in any certain order and you
certainly do not need to do all of them. These calendars are also attached to this letter if
you would like to print them out electronically. We hope you find them helpful.
Blessings,
The Holy Spirit School Staff
Holy Spirit School will be holding a food drive
during Lent to help St. Joseph Food Program.
This is a great chance to make a difference in
our community. St. Joseph Food Program provides
food at no cost for low-income families, senior
citizens and individuals in need throughout the
four counties of Winnebago, Outagamie,
Waushara and Calumet; and serves 1000 families
every week. I encourage you to join us in our
efforts to help our less-fortunate neighbors. The food and funds we raise will help
St. Joe’s supply food to these families.
The class that brings in the most canned food items will receive a certificate of
achievement and a dress down day for the class to enjoy!

February 26, 2020
Dear parents,
In fall of 2018, the Diocese of Green Bay engaged an independent investigative firm to conduct an
outside review of the files of all diocesan priests and deacons. Their review led to the release of our list
of clergy with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor in January 2019, and also brought to
the forefront the need for a robust safe environment reporting system.
As we work toward a safe and secure environment for all people who live within our diocese, we are
committed to making it simple and confidential to share red flag behaviors such as:
Sexual abuse of a minor (if this is currently taking place, immediately call 911 to report)
Harassment
Boundary issues
Threats of violence
Concerning behavior by clergy, staff, or volunteers
Misconduct
Anything that you may find stressful or out of the ordinary and feel compelled to bring forward
regarding clergy, staff, or volunteers
We must partner with our parents, students, and family members to combat these challenges and take a
proactive approach to preventing what we can by staying ahead of concerning and potentially harmful
situations. We must work together to take timely actions and help our community members, whether
they are a program leader, a victim, or a bystander.
To help with these efforts, the Diocese of Green Bay Office of Safe Environment has implemented a
web-based incident reporting tool called Awareity. Awareity is a comprehensive platform for reporting,
tracking, and documenting incidents and concerns. Awareity empowers program leaders, staff,
neighbors, visitors, and all other community members to be heard and to safely report warning signs
and trouble. The goal of Awareity is prevention and to help identify red flags and warning signs before
an incident occurs or escalates.
If you ever need to report a concern, please visit our website at
www.holyspiritknights.org/virtus-awareity or the diocesan website at
www.gbdioc.org/awareity and click on the Awareity Incident Report button
(shown to the right). All reports can be submitted by using your name or
remaining anonymous if you choose. As soon as a report is made, all of the
appropriate personnel will receive an immediate notification of the report,
review the report information and take appropriate actions to intervene and/or
prevent escalation.
P.O. Box 23825 Green Bay WI 54305-3825 • 920-437-7531 • Fax: 920-437-0694 • www.gbdioc.org
Awareity is not meant to replace face-to-face communication, but instead to provide an alternative
option for reporting information that you may be uncomfortable coming forward with normally. Using
Awareity to make a report also ensures that your report is heard and received by a team of people who
will be responsible for proper follow-up and follow through on the information provided.
By working together, we can help prevent incidents from occurring and ensure the safety and security of
our school and parish communities.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (920) 272-8174 or [email protected].
Sincerely,
Courtney Coopman
Victim Assistance Coordinator

Holy Spirit Catholic School
WISCONSIN PARENTAL CHOICE PROGRAM
Frequently asked Questions
What is the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program?
The Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP) allows students to attend a participating private school tuition-free if certain eligibility
criteria are met and the students are selected by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). The private school, on behalf of the student’s parent or guardian, receives a state aid payment (voucher) for each eligible student. WPCP is a separate application process from the Holy
Spirit Catholic School tuition assistance application.
How do I know if we are eligible?
Families must meet income and student eligibility requirements.
Income eligibility: The prior year adjusted gross income (AGI) must be at or
below 220% of the federal poverty guideline (see chart). This would include
income of parents or legal guardians residing in the same household as the
student applicant. Family size includes parents or legal guardians and their
children by birth, marriage or adoption that reside in the same household as
the student applicant.
Student eligibility: Students new to Holy Spirit, coming from a public school or
home school in grades 4K through grade 8 are eligible. Returning Holy Spirit
students entering 4K-grade 8 are eligible for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school
years. Thanks to the support from St. Mary Catholic Schools, Holy Spirit has
entered into a combined school agreement with SMCS to allow eligible returning
students to receive a voucher for two years. Beginning in the 2022-23 school
year, the returning Holy Spirit students entering 4K, kindergarten, and grade 1
will be eligible.
What expenses are covered by the WPCP vouchers?
The WPCP provides private schools with state-funded vouchers that cover full tuition, and registration. WPCP vouchers do not cover
co-curricular fees, equipment, transportation, after-school or summer care, elective school trips, classroom supplies or meals.
How and when do we apply?
Parents must complete the online Private School Choice Program application during the open application period, February 3-April 16, 2020
available at https://sms.dpi.wi.gov/ChoiceParent/. An email address is required to apply. In addition, parents must provide supporting
documentation directly to Holy Spirit Catholic School within the application period. Applicants are strongly encouraged to call Mike Zuleger
prior to completing the application.
What supporting documentation is required to complete the application?
Proof of income is required for all students new to WPCP. A signed copy of the federal 1040 is acceptable for verification. If taxes have not
been filed, please call Mike Zuleger (see below) to determine the best option for your family to qualify and provide documentation. It is
strongly recommended that you select the DPI method to verify income. The Department of Revenue (DOR) method is highly sensitive and
submissions using this method are final.
Proof of residency is required for all new and returning applicants. For a complete list of acceptable forms, refer to the DPI website (see
below). All supporting documentation must be submitted to the Holy Spirit Catholic School during the application period.
How are students chosen to participate in WPCP at Holy Spirit Catholic School?
The DPI will randomly draw from among eligible, valid applications. Parents are notified by the DPI via email in the summer regarding
acceptance or waitlist status.
Do I need to reapply for WPCP every year if my child receives a voucher at Holy Spirit Catholic School?
Yes, you must reapply each year online via the DPI website and supply residency documentation during the open application period.
Students who have received a WPCP voucher and reapply will be awarded a voucher each subsequent year regardless of income and grade.
If you have questions or would like to set up a private consult, contact Mike Zuleger at [email protected] or
920-733-2651 . More information on the program can be found at the Department of Public Instruction
website: http://dpi.wi.gov/sms/choice-programs.
