Welcome to our Community FestivalThis is the fourth year that churches working together with other agencies have staged the Celebrating Community Festival. From this year’s programme you will see that there are many new and exciting events / talks for you to attend and enjoy - many free of charge. It might be useful to have a highlighter pen in your hand as you go through this programme to mark off the things you would like to do. Many people in our area work voluntarily to provide clubs and organisations to enhance our lives. Our local Councillors, PCSOs, Youth Workers all work on our behalf, and we acknowledge everything that is good and thank them on our Community’s behalf for all the effort and time they put into the things that they do for us.

This year our Festival ‘kicks off ’ on the same day as the start of the World Cup Tournament in South Africa. Reflecting the excitement of this, there are two family events organised involving a football theme (12th June at St. Philip and St. James and 26th June at St. William’s Church). Perhaps we will all have the words of the song ‘It’s coming home, it’s coming home’ ringing in our ears as many are hopeful of the FIFA World Cup Trophy being lifted high by the English team - as in 1966. Interestingly, just as churches are behind this modest Festival so it was that churches were behind the setting up of the football league system in this country (in 1886) and many well known clubs of today have their roots in church teams.

If football is not for you, though, don’t despair! There are lots of ‘football free’ events - for example strawberries and cream, line dancing, ‘Help the Heroes’ service in the style of ‘Songs of Praise’, Teddy Bears’ Picnics plus the exotic flavours of Africa at the African Night. There are walks offered by volunteers from the Walderslade Woodlands Group and opportunities to try out new-to-you crafts. The local libraries are once again offering events - one showing you how to research your family tree and another is an informal afternoon for you to share your local memories.

4th year

Local Churches

Details can be found on page 21.

Often the church is ridiculed and pilloried, sometimes deservedly, especially for the things it gets wrong but it has also been an agent of social change and has instigated many good things for the welfare of all that we now take for granted.

Celebrating and giving thanks can start in many small ways … perhaps we can all make a special effort to thank those around us during this Celebrating Community Festival fortnight for the things they do for us … or even smiling at strangers or sending cards of thanks to those who offer a service that enhances our lives. Why not use this fortnight as a time to invite a neighbour in for a cup of tea or coffee … we have much to give thanks for and our relationships with one another are so very important if we desire to be a community.

At the heart of this festival is God’s church working together, setting aside denominational differences for the glory of God and the good of our community. Within this fortnight there are opportunities to be still and draw inner spiritual strength from God; you will receive a warm welcome from any of the churches in our area that you may choose to visit.

My prayer is that you will be blessed by this Festival.

Rev John S Currie (Project Co-ordinator)
