This week is the final time that we will have our senior students at school before they head off to external examinations that get underway on Monday 11 November. Included with this newsletter is a copy of the examination timetable (it’s on our website too). We wish them all the best and trust they will use their time wisely and prepare thoroughly for these exams.

This year I have challenged our Year 13 leaders to leave a legacy. We tend to think of leaving a legacy as when someone achieves or contributes something that touches the lives of thousands. Yet for most of us, leaving a legacy is more about how we use what talents and resources we have to make a difference where and with whom we have influence – in our families, neighbourhood and communities. We had a very successful Sports, Performing Arts and Cultural Prize giving recently and our very own guest speaker Elizabeth Randle is a student who will definitely leave a legacy. In April 2014, Elizabeth was selected by Archery New Zealand to be a member of the Archery New Zealand team to represent New Zealand at the 2014 Bi annual Trans Tasman Trophy competition. This tournament is between Australia and New Zealand’s best junior archers and this year it was held in Brisbane, Australia from the 28th September to 3rd October. Over this week the team competed in individual and team competitions. The competitions consisted of a 720 ranking round, individual matchplay, mixed team matchplay and two days of 1440 rounds. Despite hot and windy weather, Elizabeth won a Gold medal in the Division One Women’s Compound and Matchplay and a Gold medal in the Junior Women’s Compound records. This amazing young lady also broke Junior Women’s Compound records, the single score from one of the 1440 days and the combined score of the two 1440 days. The following is Elizabeth’s speech: “The greater pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do; starting archery at the young age of 7 was rarely heard of in New Zealand. The strength and mental pressure that archery places upon someone at such a young age is immense. I embraced this challenge with the support of family and friends. My first archery competition was here in Rotorua at the club grounds. I was the youngest competitor and I had no other archers in my age division, I had to complete the shoot of 144 arrows with two boys who were much older than me. The sport of archery took up a lot of time in my life throughout my primary and intermediate schooling. I was training every day after school, shooting around 50 + arrows with my brother who was competing in national and international tournaments at the time. My dad was both our coaches at the time. He was stretched to the limits with both of us shooting completely different bow types. Hamish competed with the recurve bow which is the Olympic style traditional bow and myself shooting the modern compound that isn’t an Olympic bow because of its modern enhancements. This meant that I had to learn what I was doing wrong when my arrows weren’t in the gold and I had to learn how to fix my gear if something broke. In 2009, I was selected by Archery NZ and World Archery to train with world-class USA and French coaches at the San Diego, USA Olympic training centre with other archers from around the Commonwealth. They taught us the skills to compete on the world stage. This was a great experience living with Olympians for a week and taking in all the knowledge the coaches had.

This experience meant I drifted away from my father’s coaching as I was competing at a national level, winning medals in higher age groups and competing against the men in the open tournaments. So he took me to a coach in Auckland who has coached world champions. John Dearling took me under his wing and has got me to where I am today. This however, does mean I train by myself and travel to Auckland every chance I get. Being presented with the black uniform to represent New Zealand and wear at international competitions that I had qualified for was a huge achievement at the age of 13 and I have represented New Zealand internationally ever since. In April I was selected to compete at the 2014 Bi- annual Trans Tasman Trophy Competition as a part of the 16 strong New Zealand team (the biggest team yet). This tournament is between Australia and New Zealand’s best junior archers and this year it was held in Brisbane, Australia form 28th September to 3rd October. Over this week we competed in individual and team competitions. Despite hot and windy weather, I won a gold medal in the Division One Women’s Compound Matchplay and gold in the Junior Women’s Compound Double 1440. I was also the women’s team captain, inspiring and leading the team to do the best we could in the conditions. Through my passion for archery I have learnt time management and my desire to win. The dedication that the sport of archery needs is a huge commitment but the rewards are huge. Throughout the long hail, rain or shine trainings there are two words that keep me going “I Am”. This is because what you put after them shapes your reality- Jake Kaminski, USA world Champion”. Our senior Academic Prize giving was on Thursday 7 November. It was a wonderful celebration of the numerous positive academic achievements of students, many of whom have been with us for their entire secondary schooling. In the Senior school we are reaching a very significant time of the year, as our students count how far they have come in their achievement and begin to prepare for their external exams. As families and whānau I think it is important to consider how tough and stressful this can be for some of our girls. I would encourage the adults in the family to think about how their work day would be if they had it quantified and measured every hour or so with a specific report on progress given with a grade and then compared to every other person, and then shared with your parents! Therefore, I would suggest that you think carefully about how to support your daughter. Helping them to plan when they have their external exams and having them sharing this with you is a good idea, as we all know that certain students like to handle difficult situations by pretending it isn’t happening. Talking the planning through calmly is good advice and then encouraging a little revision doesn’t hurt. If you have any questions feel free to discuss this with your student’s whanau teacher, Dean or with another relevant member of staff. As I mentioned last week, for those who are a little further away from achieving their goals, we will be offering additional support . Details of this will be sent to relevant whanau, but if you need further information, feel free to contact Deputy Principal Raewyn Krammer.

Final School Assembly

Our Final School Assembly for this year was held on Wednesday,5 November in the PAC at 2.15pm. At this assembly we recognised the following students who have excelled in a particular area:

Shimiah McNicholl K9 Outstanding Sporting Effort – Competing at the Te Rupe All Style Martial Arts International Karate Championships

NCEA Exams Exams begin on 10 November. Our senior students (Year 11-13) begin study leave on Friday 7 November. Most have external exams to sit but some students will come into school through the exam period to finish work, complete literacy/numeracy requirements or do assessments.

I am requiring students who have yet to gain NCEA level 1 and 2 and their 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits to attend school from November 7th to work with teaching staff and support staff until they have completed these credits.

School does not officially end until 10 December and we hope that with up to an additional week’s focused effort, it will make a significant difference for these students.

I thank families for their support in this matter. A letter informing families of this situation will be sent out this week.

If you have any queries regarding this matter please don’t hesitate to contact Deputy Principal - Raewyn Krammer. PUM (Paid Union Meeting) On the afternoon of Wednesday 19 November teaching staff who are members of the PPTA will be attending a Paid Union Meeting as is their right under the collective contract. Normal classes will run through to Period 4 (12.30pm) when students will be released to go home. (Note: only Year 9 and 10 students will be at school at this time.) NCEA exams will continue uninterrupted at the scheduled times. Buses will run at the usual times and the school will remain open but classes will not run. Supervision will be provided for those students who need to remain at school.

Other key dates this term: · Year 9/ 10 Exams – 5/6 November · NCEA Exams – 10 November/3 December · Paid Union Meeting – Wednesday 19 November – students released 12.30pm · Tuesday 9 December Junior Prizegiving –9.30am in the PAC. To the Year 13 students who do finish their formal instruction on Thursday 6 November of this week, I wish them all the best. To everyone in the school and community, I extend a warm invitation to the Prize-Giving on Tuesday 9th December at 9.30am. I am really looking forward to a great morning of celebration for our junior school and a chance to show our respect to those learners who have achieved at a fantastic level. There is nothing better than celebrating with your whānau/family.

Celebrating Performing Arts Excellence A Night of Stories ‘A Night of Stories’ was a presentation of devised work by the Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 Drama students. Devising is a process where a group of actors take an idea, theme or issue and create a piece of theatre, completely from scratch. It’s scary, hugely fun and requires great imagination and lots of work. The results of this year’s devising work, were outstanding. In Year 10 with a stimulus of Fairy Stories, we found Prince Charming in a relationship counsellor’s office with Cinderella, Rupunzel and Snow White all bemoaning his infidelity. In another twisted tale, the witch ends up marrying the prince. In Year 11, the girls applied their talents to the theme of Social Injustice and found moving and thought-provoking ways to create drama around issues such as, the Holocaust, cyber bullying, domestic violence and the plight of uneducated girls in Afghanstan. The year 13’s looked at historical figures as the basis of their work and presented powerful pieces on illegitimacy and the complex nature of relationships.

Through Drama we gain a deeper appreciation of culture and a new power to examine attitudes, behaviours and values. I am so proud of the beautiful work the girls created and performed, not only entertaining us but enriching our thinking as well. Bridget Donovan - Drama Teacher

‘The Post’ by Ada Te Kaawa and Zeta Howden explored issues around cyber bullying.
