Our speaker element for thedinner will be of particularinterest to those in the ginindustry. A gin created from a1495 gin recipe unearthed in anout-of-print, Dutch language, history of Jenever. This has beenre-created under the directionof Jean-Sébastien Robicquet (Président DirecteurGénéral of EWG Spirits & Wine, producers of grapedistillate based G’Vine Gin de France), as anacademic exercise. It is not intended as acommercial product, so the opportunity toexperience the recipe is very rare. EWG are verykindly providing both their re-creation of theoriginal and their modern day interpretation of therecipe, the latter reflecting their considered view ofwhat the 1495 distiller might have made had theyhad access to the range of exotic botanicalsavailable today.

Philip Duff will speakabout the discovery ofthe recipe and itsproduction and Jean-Sébastien Robicquetwill lead attendees in a tasting of the twospirits.

As befits the Gin Guild, the menu is gininfluenced:

and Bramley & Gage Damson Gin“The 1495 recipe is not just the first chapter in the rich historyof gin. This historic Grape distillate-based recipe is part of thevery foundation of the category. By taking this recipe apart andrefreshing it for our era, we will learn so much more about thelong and circuitous journey the spirit has taken through thecenturies.” Jean-Sébastien Robicquet

WelcomeThe Gin Guild was incorporated in 2012. The firstmembers joined the Gin Guild at a formalinstallation ceremony held in The Mansion House in the historic heart of London. This brochure will I hope provide a brief background to both the GinGuild and to our spring member installation.

Guild members work hard to promote gin. GinGuild membership is an honour and a visiblerecognition of those who are prominent in the ginindustry, in all its many parts.

We have already welcomed a wide range ofmembers to the Guild, including senior members ofthe major distillers, as well as those from mediumsized and craft distillers, journalists, sales andmarketing and brand advisors, promoters, barowners and leading cocktail experts, spiritspackaging consultants and professional advisers.

The history of gin and its associations with Londongoes back centuries. The Worshipful Company ofDistillers is a livery company, one of London’soriginal ancient trade bodies. It was incorporatedby Royal Charter in 1638 and remains integral andvery active in the spirit trade. It is the Gin Guild’sparent company.

Installation to membership of the Gin Guild at theGuild’s spring installation and Annual Gin IndustryDinner is an ideal way to join the Guild as it is anexclusive occasion for the gin industry to gettogether.

We offer a very warm welcome to those who wish tojoin the Gin Guild at this time.

Why not combine theexperience with a tourof some of London’sother famous sites(perhaps includingsome of its gindistilleries)?

I look forward tomeeting new faces andnew friends bound witha shared love of gin.

The Savile Club The Savile Club, which is our venue for the GinGuild’s spring installation, is a private membersclub in London and dates back to 1868. Itestablished itself at the heart of literary London, having gathered Robert Louis Stevenson, ThomasHardy, HG Wells, Rudyard Kipling, ComptonMackenzie, Max Beerbohm and WB Yeats amongstothers, around the Club table.

Music was represented over the years including:Charles Villers Stanford, Arthur Bliss, WilliamWalton and Edward Elgar . Scientist members haveincluded Lord Kelvin, John Cockcroft and LordRutherford and latterly radio journalists fromnearby Broadcasting House and eventually a wholegeneration of filmmakers, television producers andscriptwriters.

The current property was largely created in the1890's. The eminent firm of Parisian architects anddecorators, Bouwens Van der Boyer constructed theBallroom and elegant salons. French interiors hadbeen popular in London since their introduction toApsley House in the 1830's, but few examples wereconstructed with the architectural rigor andexquisite craftsmanship found here. The interiorsare amongst the most extensive and exquisite oftheir type to survive in London.

The Gin GuildThe Gin Guild has been set up to work with gindistillers and those in the gin industry from the UKand around the world to provide leadership andfocus to the promotion of this exciting spiritcategory.

The Guild provides a vibrant industry community, defined by a shared professional interest andshared ideals and experiences, in a congenial andcompanionable atmosphere. This reflects both theestablished and traditional history of the Gin trade in which London played a key part, as well asincorporating contemporary experiences.

The Guild is driven by a management committee, including representatives from the four largest UKGin Distillers – Bacardi, Chivas Brothers, Diageoand William Grant and Sons (the four Guildfounders), with other Guild members.

The titular head of the Gin Guild is the GrandRectifier. The current holder is ChristopherHayman, who has been in the gin trade for over 40years. He is Chairman of Hayman Distillers, afamily owned company.

The founder companies are each represented by acorporate Founder Warden, with others from thosecompanies as Rectifiers. Other Gin distilleries andbrand owners are represented by Warden Rectifiers.Individual Guild members are known as Rectifiers.

Installations to the Gin Guild are held at varioustimes of the year and include both an option at theGuild’s spring installation and Annual Gin IndustryDinner or an option (in the autumn of each year),of Guild installation at the highly prestigious andtraditional venue of the Mansion House, London, followed by the formal Banquet of the WorshipfulCompany of Distillers, in the famous MansionHouse banqueting room.

The Guild brings together gin distillers andindustry leaders involved in the production, promotion, distribution and consumption of gin(together with other interested parties), in order topromote and encourage commitment to excellencein gin distillation and industry custodianship of the spirit category.

The Guild does not seek to promote any particularbranded product or products. It aims to bringtogether the widest range of products and theirproducers and those associated in the widerindustry, in order to provide a valued forum for allthose involved in gin production, sales, marketingand distribution.

The Guild only recognises gin styles produced bydistilling ethyl alcohol in stills traditionally usedfor gin, in the presence of juniper berries and otherbotanicals – provided that the juniper taste ispredominant.
