July 26, 1948 – The Army Exchange Service becomes the Army & Air Force Exchange Service aſter the U.S. Air Force was created. Col. William Kendall, above, is AAFES’ first chief. July 25, 1895 – The War Department’s General Orders No. 46 directs commanders to open post exchanges at their installaons. Above, a 1920s PX at Vancouver Barracks, birthplace of the Exchange. July 15, 1996 – AAFES debuts aafes.com as strictly an informaon site about the organizaon. Online shopping would follow in about a year. The site evolved into today’s ShopMyExchange.com. July 13, 2016 – The Exchange begins shipping online orders from stores to reduce costs and increase speed of delivery to customers. July 1, 1966 – The first AAFES managers move into rented space in Dallas from HQ in New York City. The new HQ in Dallas, above, opened Oct. 20, 1967. July 28, 1992 – AAFES’ Deferred Payment Program comes to CONUS, eventually evolving into the MILITARY STAR ® card.

On July 25, the Exchange celebrates its 122nd anniversary. Coincidentally, the month of July contains additional historical milestones in Exchange history.

Celebrate the Exchange Anniversary!

July 26, 1948 – The Army Exchange Service becomes the Army & Air Force Exchange Service after the U.S. Air Force was created. Col. William Kendall, above, is AAFES’ first chief.
