Part o the initiative to establish a
network o trails/paths is to increase theconnectivity within the town between
key areas o interest.
The Visitor Centre, while very well marked
on approach rom Mabou, operates as a
pit stop beore driving onwards - it need
to have a direct link to immediate areaso interest such as the Miners Museum.
Where the Miners Museum currently sits
is a potential ly high traf c area, although
at present it is quite the opposite. Signageand the current boardwalk project will
help enhance that.
The proposed Leadership Centre
(ormerly the Ho) is the ormer Mines
Pay Of ce, and wil l be a welcome central
hub.
The Arts Centre is stranded rom the
community and needs a more deliberateconnection to the Academy and
surrounding residential area to increase
traf c
The Company homes districts were builtin two distinct phases, the Red Rowsalong Central Ave and Mine Road, andthe second phase encircled by Mann Aveand Lower Railway St. While the solutionto preserving these remains unresolveda majority of residents feel that theyare a integral part of the history andcharacter of the town, and worth findinga solution to their preservation. As partof the pathways/connections initiative, the company homes district would andshould be an integral part of that strategy.
The Shean Housing Co-operative iscurrently undergoing a ReBlock programto map out energy retrofits for existinghouses.
In Glace Bay, Cape Breton University set uplocal partnerships for the 50 Mechanic St.Restoration Project, setting a precedentfor solutions to the dilapidated state ofthese heritage properties.

The IDA currently has plans fordeveloping a Gaelic Forest - inspired bythe book A Forest for Calum, by localauthor Frank McDonald. The Forest iswould both celebrate the communitysGaelic heritage, serve as an educational
vehicle for Gaelic language andnatural ecosytems, fit within the largercommunity trails/connection strategy, and work towards connecting the ArtsCentre within the fold of the town proper.
The project has interested supportersin the Department of Tourism, Dep. ofEducation, and Cape Breton University.
Plans have been developed based onmunicipal property near the Arts Centre, and in the adjacent map weve allocated3 possible locations that in variousways would benefit the communityby connecting schools, local residentsand nearby destinations and activetransportation routes.
