weddings and engagements have a way of leaving you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. it doesn’t

matter how many times you hear the love story of the couple or the plans they have for their big day, the unfolding of dreams into reality is always captivating. More so for the romantic at heart ...

Something like the story and plans of Johnny and natalie ward (page 6). He met her for the first time at age 16, moved cities to woo his lady love and in the very early twenties decided she was the one for him – proposing to her after a year and a half of courtship to seal the romance. The wedding itself seems dreamlike, woven with love of family and friends who pitched in to help the duo – still students at university and with limited funds – to make their day every bit as special as the couple and their story.

Happy reading.

a classic wedding with a touch of vintage is how Fraser Kevin and Caitlyn Mallory ward’s dream day looked. Both the

ceremony and reception venues were carefully chosen to form the perfect background to fit this theme, with the former held at St george anglican Church in epsom and the latter at allely House in Kumeu (both in auckland).

The picnic-styled photo shoot was something special – a relaxed affair with bubbles, nibbles and some friends. gorgeous lace rugs, bunting made by Caitlyn and her mother and old suitcases from their home (family heirlooms) were brought out to fit the theme. The reception itself was all that the couple had dreamt of ... fairy lights, live music, beautiful flowers, candles, silver service with excellent food by okahu Catering and – most importantly – their family members bringing alive the day and dancing well into the night under a starry sky. Perfect!

Johnny Brock met natalie at 16 and knew straight away that he wanted to marry her, even though they lived in different cities. at 20 the much-in-love

lad decided to give the relationship a serious go – so he saved some money, bought a car, packed his life into the boot and made the move from Christchurch to auckland. it was all worth it because after dating for a year and a half, Johnny proposed and natalie said “yes”. The romance continues ...

Still studying and with little money, the couple carved out their dream day with the support of their parents. The ceremony was held at wilson Home Chapel, followed by reception at a venue in auckland University. natalie designed her own wedding dress with her mother, combining antique silver and gold brocade from her late grandmother’s wedding dress to form the bodice and white silk organza for the skirt. The 50’s style dress was every bit as stunning as the bride. Her nana (a retired florist) arranged the beautiful bouquet and Johnny’s mother made their cake.

Budget constraint also meant that the couple opted for canapés instead of dinner. But it was all worth it as having all 200 plus of their favourite people attend was the most special part of the wedding. “even though we had to think creatively to organise our wedding on a tight budget, i don’t think we would have had anything differently.”

don’t just fall in love with the aesthetics; consider all functional aspects of a venue before selecting it for your special day.

Finding thatspecial place

when planning a wedding, one of the first and most important decisions a couple has to make is the location

and venue. You can plan your entire day around a dream location or start with a blank page. However you go about it, don’t underestimate the practical aspects of the place. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your venue.

Budget: There is no point falling in love with a place you can’t afford, so setting out the monetary boundaries at the start of the search is important.

guest list: wedding guests squashed together in their frocks is not a pretty sight. Look for a venue that can accommodate your guests comfortably.

Wedding style and theme: give your wedding style some thought – do you want a sit-down affair that needs more space or would you rather have a buffet-style service? if you have a theme in mind, will the venue be able to do justice to it? a rodeo theme will certainly not fit in a church setting! while these are good points to consider, don’t let them define your choice. Most venues can be “done up” to fit your parameters.

facilities offered: Check what facilities are offered by the venue and see if they fit your requirements. Think about things like catering, entertainment, parking, corkage and accommodation.

ceremony and reception: You wedding will most likely have two parts – ceremony and reception. You need to pick a place that can either cater for both or, if the two parts to the wedding will be at different locations, proximity between the two is an important consideration. This is especially true if you’ve got ideas for a church wedding.

For the ceremony your options include a church or another relevant religious establishment, the registry office or any number of places for a civil ceremony. You could even tie the knot while holidaying overseas.

Reception options are also limitless – hotels, vineyards, marquees, boats, historic buildings, lodges, restaurants and bars, parks, reserves, beaches ...

indoors or outdoors? Both have their advantages, so the decision will be based on what you want and can manage.

“outdoor weddings can give you many beautiful and exotic options,” says wedding planner Jennifer Sanders of Sanders weddings. From beaches, vineyards, parks and reserves to your own backyard, the options are endless. according to Jennifer many people like backyard ceremonies and reception. They can be dressed up beautifully to make an enchanting backdrop for your wedding. She does caution that backyard weddings need not necessarily be affordable as marquees alone can cost from $5000 to $8000.

one of the biggest disadvantages of outdoor weddings is the weather. it is out of your control and having a wet-weather plan in place is absolutely essential.

“an indoor wedding can be just as beautiful as an outdoor one. it can be held anywhere from a small chapel to a grand cathedral, and can be as elaborately decorated or intimately simple,” says Jennifer. weather is of little worries – in fact, if you’re having a winter wedding, an indoor venue would be preferred. Many venues even offer the option of having the ceremony outdoors and reception indoors, or vice versa.

10What’s hot?Ideas, big and small, that are making a splash at contemporary weddings.

reCeptIoN“More couples are opting for a reception style that suits their personality and taste rather than automatically going in for a traditional sit-down affair,” says Amber roper from red creative – event Styling. to get a warm and inviting feel, people are opting for homes as reception venues or recreating a lounge-setting at venues by including personal items in the decor.

More intimate weddings with fewer guests are also scoring high with couples also opting for relaxed and fun inclusions like lawn games, picnics and photo booths, according to Amber.

deCor aNd stylINgamong the stories doing the rounds when it comes to the decor and styling of weddings are patterns and prints – from table runners to bow ties, they are everywhere. Stripes, polka dots, bird prints, floral ... all is fair go. Use them on paper lanterns, garlands and buntings – wherever fancy, and perhaps your diY skills, take you. Raid you nana and mother’s cupboards for lace – lots of it – and all things vintage. it’s still very much in season. don’t shy away from adding in a dash of glitz and glamour either – very 1920s, very stylish.

welcome rich hues (not overwhelmingly so) like red and orange into your celebrations. if that’s not quite your style, combinations such as pink and gray, blue willow and white (perfect match for the china if vintage is your style), and mint and yellow hold their lasting appeal. “navy blue and purple are also popular colour choices,” says emma newman of emma newman weddings.

Personalising you wedding is also hot – add in photo frames, quotations for tables and similar soft touches to make it all about you. Some suggestions from emma include: photos on the invite in black and white or those of your journey together hung with bunting and pegs, having your own brand or logo, serving your favourite foods or a small video edit of your wedding day played later.

Flowers and weddings go hand-in-hand and arranging flowers with accessories is on-trend these days, according to Flowers by Blush’s Kelly amundsen. She suggests encasing flowers underneath glass cloches, filling many mismatched bottles with a variety of blooms and styling table displays with eclectic odds and ends like wooden spools wound in lace or beautiful old books.

food, drINks, tHe Cake aNd soMetHINg sWeetComplementary to the trend of warm and intimate weddings, anything homespun or personal is big when it comes to food says Red Creative – event styling's amber Roper. So is organic food. Food trucks are big at events and could easily find their way into weddings too. For drinks amber suggests beautiful bar set-ups that serve a signature cocktail to make it all economical.

in keeping with the bridal love for old-world charm, the vintage influence on wedding cakes is strong according to Sondra Vicelich from Sweet Bites Cakes. Think pastel colouring, frilly old-fashioned roses and loads of lace. Rustic themes are becoming very popular for summer outdoor weddings.

we’re still loving the candy bars according to amber, though she points towards a slow shift to replace the traditional cake with cake buffets. Cake pops and macaroons are also growing in popularity.

Cupcake towers and dessert buffets retain their sweet charm, according to Sondra. The cake flavours most requested this season have been dark chocolate and raspberry; lemon; cookies and cream; and white chocolate and passionfruit. next season, watch out for something more exotic like coconut and lime, and white chocolate and manuka honey.Ph

statIoNery Borrowing from interiors and fabric designs, wedding stationery that is bright, bold and beautiful is becoming popular according to Lucy Thorton from cocoa Berry Design.

Although they’ve been around for a while, vintage, antique and lacey styles are still charming couples. Soft, whimsical flowers are in too.

Give the font you use some thought, suggests Lucy. “Free flowing, bold calligraphic fonts with a handwritten feel are on-trend, while quirky and hip fonts will soon make an appearance.”

emerald – the Pantone colour of 2013 – should be popping up everywhere according to her. Ombre and water colour trends remain a popular choice.

floWers“Brides are steering away from using a traditional white and green colour palate and choosing colour,” says Kelly. Blush pinks, mint, bold palates of yellow, fuschia, rose pink and olive green are in with white flowers being used as an accent.

Combining textures with flowers, foliages, herbs and plants has led to bouquet styles becoming "soft, loose and un-arranged" according to Kelly. Texture also finds its way into buttonholes and corsages.

“wearing flowers in the hair is also popular,” says Kelly. Floral crowns or garlands made from a mixture of blooms, and foliage and fabric-covered headbands embellished with a cluster of fresh flowers are popular for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls, according to her.

a wide variety of flowers are making their way into weddings, including dahlias, sweet peas, poppies, Columbian and david austin roses, succulents and peonies.

What’s hot?

MusIC Live bands, dJs and sometimes even a combination of the two are being used at weddings, according to Findaband’s Sam Browne. among popular songs, Gangnam Style is riding high with lots of horse-inspired dancing by a pudgy Korean pop star. Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe is still a dance floor filler and We Found Love by Calvin Harris and Rihanna is also big.

when it comes to choosing first dance songs, popular picks include Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years, Brooke Fraser’s Arithmetic and Chris Knox’s Not Given Lightly.

BrIdal Make-up aNd HaIrgo natural, suggests nicki Collett from Bridal Beauty. elaborating the look, she talks about a fresh glowing skin with a natural soft lip and accentuating the eyes with natural brown tones to make the eye colour pop. natural lash flares are used to open the eyes – big eyes are great for photos. Soft curls, not too structured, half up or in a bun, is where the hair goes in this look.

For the vintage bride, she suggests smokey eyes and a liner to complement the natural eye shape. The hairstyle is a side bun with a vintage swoop fringe finished off with a vintage pin or flower on the side.

don’t overlook the nails as they will be in focus when he puts a ring on it, advises nicki. She suggests keeping them mid-length with French polish and using gel nails if your nails aren’t long enough.

tHe grooM“grooms are returning to more classic shapes with their suiting,” says Ben St george from Crane-Brothers. wider and peaked lapels are making a strident return, as are cuffed trousers. an increasing number of grooms are looking to make their suits really special. “Like the bride, the grooms want their outfits to stand out from the wedding party and to really make it their day.”

another strong story for grooms is the use of jewellery. Lapel pins and an elegant cufflink add an additional touch of formality to an outfit, according to Ben.

tHe BrIde “colours, ruffles, lace and vintage beading are in,” says Lori McPherson from Astra Bridal. Brides are also opting for interesting necklines; and lace overlaid with tulle and layered skirts – both floaty and dramatic lines. The look is ethereal created through interesting features such as hidden beading, appliqués and fabrics.

Long, long veils – beyond the end of the gown – are the bride’s best accessory, adding drama and romance to the attire. Lori also points out a preference for modern jewellery set in “vintage” style – essentially that is silver that is slightly darker as opposed to being really bright.

14Bride thingsOn the gown Looking for some inspiration for your wedding gown? Check out

these trends that are doing the rounds – pick up from here what suits you and makes you feel like a million dollars.

Bejewelled: dazzle on your day with some serious bling as everything, from encrusted sleeves and ornate bodices to all-over beading find their way onto bridal gowns.

portrait backs: Your back will be in focus during the ceremony and gowns are designed to reflect this. Showing a seductive little ring of skin, the keyhole back is popular this season. enriched with lace detailing or showcasing the illusion effect, it spells sophistication.

Long sleeves: This royalty-inspired cover-up look still runs strong – two years after Kate Middleton sported it on her gown. Make it billowy or skin-tight, whatever your style. They look lovely when sheer.

Lace and tulle: always a favourite with brides, lace and tulle continue to adorn gowns – great for achieving an ethereal and dream-like look, especially when used in combination.

illusion neckline: a go-go thing this season, designers are creating an ultra-feminine, mysterious look using illusion necklines. Loving the illusion look when layered in beading, scrolled, winding embroideries, lace, buttons, jewels and flyaway feathers. it is a great option for brides marrying in spring or summer and seeking light-weight coverage.

Vintage touch: a trend that is still working its charm on brides. Look for mile-high necklines – sported with dangerously low backs, they have a ravishing effect. a high neckline can be particularly poignant if you’re baring your legs in a playful mini. Coquettish bows on the front or back also add a sweet element from the past.

colour: Brides are looking for something more than white in their gowns as they feel coloured dresses work better for them – white having a tendency to wash-out paler brides. Blush pink tones, soft pastels and sometimes even eye-catching hues like blue and red are being seen – some brides might reserve the bright shades for their accessories.

anna Schimmel shows ...“we’ll be showing highly romantic wedding dresses with intricate lace sleeves and soft illusion necklines,” says auckland-based european bridal designer anna Schimmel.

in the coming season her gowns may display sheer backs with covered buttons or dramatic diamante detailing. The simpler styles will feature flattering natural waists, with straight slender skirt silhouettes. The fabrics are very textured, but with an overall sheer and light-weight feel. “i am also currently flirting with a hue of sheer pink,” adds anna.

From Liz Mitchell “i am loving the return of elegance and old-world glamour. The beautiful vintage looks of downton Abbey with its lace and soft feminine silhouettes inspire me,” says bridal designer Liz Mitchell of her latest collection. Liz also loves creating dresses cut on the bias with a stunning low back cowl detail to create a wow factor.

with brides still being influenced by the royal wedding, classic styling (as worn by Kate Middleton on her big day) continues to be popular in Liz’s next-season gowns. as does lace with its timeless elegance and sophistication. also finding its way into her collection is colour – from soft layering of nude and champagne with a touch of black to more dramatic shades. “This is when a bride can be more individual and reflect their personality,” says Liz.

CHaNgINg rules arouNd WeddINg taBs Lets face it, weddings are an expensive affair – even a standard one – and it would be unfair to expect one family to bear the entire burden. Traditionally the bride’s family covered the wedding expenses while the groom’s family planned out the honeymoon. nowadays, however, tradition is giving way to practicality with expenses being shared and open conversations about contributions had well in advance.

Today’s couples are independent, educated and financially savvy enough to successfully manage their wedding expenses. where help is needed though, parents are never too far away.

“More and more couples are contributing sizeable amounts to their big day with parents often matching similar amounts,” says Jennifer Sanders of Sanders weddings. Usually the bride’s parents will cover the dress while the groom’s parents may settle the groomsmen's attire she adds. “although every wedding is different and i’ve had clients with all sorts of unique arrangements.”

Keep these tips in mind when budgets and contributions are being chalked out:

Have an open discussion with all individuals who will be •contributing to the wedding.

Make lists so everyone can see the wedding plan.•

Know where the funds are coming from and how much is being •contributed for that category, before you meet with any potential vendor.

roMaNCe IN taHItIwith azure waters, warm weather and jewels like Bora Bora among her islands, Tahiti is a magnet for anyone looking for a romantic escape – especially new Zealanders, given our proximity to this paradise. in fact an increasing number of Kiwis are opting to tie the knot in Tahiti.

a great combination, suggested by Tahiti Vacations, is tying the knot on the island of Moorea before flying off to Bora Bora for your honeymoon. The scenery and experience of staying in an overwater bungalow is like none other. other romantic ideas include spending the night on a private moto (islet), dining under the stars and being brought back to your resort the following morning – after a leisurely breakfast.

among the most romantic resorts here are Four Seasons Bora Bora, intercontinental Bora Bora & Thalasso Spa and the Le Taha’a island Resort & Spa (part of the world-famous Relais & Châteaux group) on the island of Taha’a.

getting the perfect shots for the camera on the big day, especially if you’re not a natural, can be a big ask. Here are some tips to help you get some fabulous shots:

don’t go budget on a photographer. •Paying a professional to do the job is worth every penny. Preferably opt for a photographer with a second shooter to capture different angles.

Have an engagement session; it •will help you relax on the day of the wedding.

avoid getting married in the •middle of day and choose a ceremony location that has some shade (squinting in the bright sun is not a pretty picture!). if you are getting married indoors, avoid buildings with dark high ceilings and few windows – natural light is your best friend.

For the getting-ready photos, •make sure the room is tidy and there is good lighting. wear make-up, not caked, but enough to enhance your beauty.

Let the kiss last for longer than •one second – it takes time to capture the moment.

Be yourself in front of the camera. •Relax, laugh, think about the moment, the romance of the day and forget the camera.

Practise in the mirror – figure out •your best smile and which poses suit you best. Try not to allow one part of your body to get too close to the lens – it will make that part appear larger than the rest of your body.

Be prepared – keep a brush or •hairspray handy for flyaway and frizzy hair, dabbing strips help soak away sweat and oil (especially for summer weddings) and a white chalk can come in use to hide any stains on the gown.

To look slimmer, keep your •shoulder to the camera and avoid looking straight into the camera. don’t look down if you want to avoid the double chin showing.

Smile – you’re getting married!

★★

White is a traditional colour for weddings and these days that extends to teeth. Cosmetic teeth whitening is an increasingly common procedure so it’s no surprise that brides and grooms are getting in on the act. After all,

“your wedding photos are for life,” as Charmaine McFarlane of Sparklewhite Teeth points out.McFarlane, who operates Sparklewhite Teeth in Auckland and several other centres in New Zealand, says people often

don’t realise how discoloured their teeth have become until they see themselves in photos. “All sorts of things can cause tooth discolouration including smoking, age, some medications, consumption of tea, coffee and red wine, and plain old genetics.”

McFarlane says teeth whitening is safe, makes you look healthier and gives you the confidence to smile more, “which is important if you’re about to get married and have lots of photos taken of yourself ”.

Sparklewhite’s treatment involves shining an LED cold light on teeth which have had a special gel applied. The gel reacts under the light and removes the discolouration. The procedure takes about an hour and is so relaxing that it’s not uncommon for McFarlane’s clients to fall asleep.

Generally, a single treatment is sufficient to lighten teeth by six to eight shades, although people with badly discoloured teeth might require a second treatment to achieve their desired result.

McFarlane says teeth whitening is popular with both brides and grooms, who can have the treatment together, sitting side by side. She recommends having it done at least a week before the wedding day, or a month prior if two treatments are likely to be needed.

Normally clients have the treatment at Sparklewhite’s Remuera clinic but McFarlane also offers an in-home service for groups such as a bride and her bridesmaids. She says a teeth whitening treatment makes a great engagement or wedding present and gift vouchers are available. Call Matt or Neil on 09 529 9359, or visit www.sparklewhite.co.nz for more information.
