Chai | Publisher’s Letter

T he U.S. and Israel have a long and special rela on-ship, rooted in shared

values and democra c principles. Since Israel’s crea on as a state in 1948, and especially a er the 1967 Six-Day War, America and Americans across the poli cal spectrum have embraced the Jewish state and recognized its substan al contribu ons in agriculture, science, medicine, educa on, the arts and technology — all for the be erment of mankind.

Within that special rela onship is Detroit and its Jewish community. For decades before the crea on of Israel, many of Detroit’s most in uen al leaders were also ardent Zionists. They recognized the histori-cal, moral and spiritual correctness of the Jewish people having a state in their ancient homeland.

Among the giants of that era was Philip Slomovitz. He departed the editorship of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle and in March 1942, launched the Detroit Jewish News.

Zionism was at Slomovitz’s core, and the pages of the Jewish News, and especially his Purely Commentary column, re ected this for more than 50 years. Israel and Zionism remain

at the core of the Jewish News to this day. In fact, they remain at the core of our Detroit Jewish community’s iden ty.

The special sec on in your hands is a mod-est reminder of the importance and achieve-ments of modern-day Israel as well as its mul -genera onal links to our community. If you are planning a vaca on in 2014, consider a rst- me or repeat visit to Israel. If you have children or grandchildren, encourage

them to experience Israel through one of the myriad programs and “experiences” that are available. If you are making decisions about charitable giving, please include support for Israel and its many worthy causes.

Following the destruc on of the Second Temple, nearly 2,000 years ago, the Jewish people were stateless and dispersed. Today, in our life mes, Israel has been reborn. Re-gardless of the many challenges Israel faces in the dangerous neighborhood it inhabits, we must never take its existence for granted.

What we do: Our goal at Zionist Organiza on of America (ZOA)-Michigan Region is to promote educa on, awareness, and support for Israel and Jewish causes in communi es, schools and colleges throughout Michigan.

Why we do it:

Today, an -Israel sen ment is spreading in the media and academia. An -Israel groups are well- funded and well-organized, and they specialize in persuading Jewish and non-Jewish people of all ages to turn against Israel.

As supporters of Israel, we realize Jewish teens and young adults are in danger of losing their Jewish iden es including their cultural and spiritual connec ons to Israel.

How we do it:

• ZOA-MI Israel Educa on Scholarship Program This program for high school students brings

teens together to learn about Israel’s history, Jewish heritage and how to advocate for Israel.

Program par cipants are eligible to apply for a special ZOA-MI scholarship to help fund an Israel experience.

• Advocacy on College and University Campuses

We’ve formed partnerships with young lead-ers at several of Michigan’s college campuses including the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University.

Through jointly sponsored debates, rallies and educa onal programs, we strive to raise awareness and combat an -Israel sen ment. Contact us at www.mizoa.org to bring a pro-gram to your school.

• Our Community-Wide Events ZOA-MI hosts a number of community-wide

programs each year. Our events focus on Israel and Jewish poli cal and cultural educa on.

We’ve hosted lectures and discussions given by writers, poli cians, professors and even former terrorists! We also show relevant documentaries to educate the community. Please visit www.mizoa.org for details about our upcoming events.

U niversity of Michigan senior Sara Nathanson is studying to be an elementary school teacher. A

summer spent helping Israeli kids on a Central Galilee kibbutz improve their English language skills strengthened that career goal.

Just as important, she relished bonding with the elementary school students, experiencing more of the bounty of the ancestral Jewish homeland and contribu ng toward richer Michigan-Israel es, which the Jewish Federa on of Metropolitan Detroit has long nurtured.

“I was able to hone my leadership skills in the classroom, and I loved planning and execu ng lessons for the students,” wrote the Farmington Hills resident in her end-of-camp assessment.

Nathanson, a Tamarack summer camp counselor in Michigan from 2009 to 2011, joined ve other Michigan young adults July 2-23 at Kibbutz Ginnegar in the Jezreel Valley, part of Michigan Jewry’s “Partnership2Gether” (P2G) region.

Federa on’s Intern Israel program supports the kibbutz’s Central Galilee English Summer Camp, which serves incoming sixth-graders be er versed in the English language.

In its 20th year, P2G currently builds educa onal opportuni es and fosters interpersonal rela onships between Michigan Jewry and the Central Galilee areas of Nazareth Illit, Migdal HaEmek and the Jezreel Valley.

English language educa on is the largest P2G ini a ve. It’s not only easier to learn English as a foreign language as a youngster, but me has shown that Israelis who speak uent English secure be er posi ons in

the Israel Defense Forces and have a be er chance compe ng in the global marketplace of ideas and opportuni es.

di erence in the way the kids used English on the rst day of camp and how they used English today. The students loved speaking with us and had so many ques ons for us about life in America.”

Michigan ContingentJoining Nathanson as Central Galilee English Summer Camp interns were four others represen ng the Detroit Federa on: Cayla Lusky of Oak Park, who earned a bachelor’s degree in ne arts from the Interna onal Academy of Design & Technology; Julie Katsnelson of West Bloom eld, a U-M freshman; Erica Broder of West Bloom eld, a U-M sophomore; and Suzanne Bosman of East Lansing, a Michigan State University senior. Claire Fishman, an Ann Arbor Huron High junior, represented the Jewish Federa on of Greater Ann Arbor.

Expanding on Nathanson’s impressions, Broder, a 2010 Federa on Teen Mission to Israel par cipant, wrote in her camp wrap-up: “It is especially exci ng to have our campers warm up to us and start speaking and understanding more English. It is rewarding to see them try so hard to speak with us and to nally succeed.”

The enrichment camp builds las ng connec ons that work both ways. Campers and counselors get to meet, mingle and socialize — and learn more about each other’s culture. The Michigan Interns interact with Israeli young adults and families in addi on to the campers. Social media have proven a great way to stay in touch.

“Everyone in the camp, and in the en re Partnership region,” Nathanson wrote, “made me feel so special and that I had much to o er. I feel so at home here in the region.”

Camp BackdropThe Intern Israel program is sponsored and funded by the Detroit Federa on’s P2G program. The Central Galilee municipali es also contribute toward the English language camp; campers pay a small fee.

“For interns, we target young adults with prior Israel, camp or classroom experience,” Lori Davidson-Mertz, Federa on’s Israel & Overseas Department senior associate, told the JN.

This marked the third summer that Federa on sent Michigan interns to the six-year-old camp.

“Success is measured by the campers’ enriched English and interpersonal skills, the increased exposure of Israeli and Michigan young people to one another, and the ghter connec ons made between

Michigan and the Central Galilee,’’ said Betsy Heuer, local volunteer leader for the P2G English program. “Par cipa on by Michigan interns has added to the camp’s success.”

The hope is to have 10 interns in 2014.

For Katsnelson, her three weeks teaching at the Central Galilee English Summer Camp and also experiencing the home hospitality in the region helped cement the feeling of mispachah — of family.

As the BBYO student leader wrote in her evalua on: “I really liked the balance of programming and spending me with the Israeli’s involved in the Partnership. I felt less like a tourist and now when I come back to Israel, there are many people who I will look forward to seeing.”

A word that is in frequent use these days is “uncertain.” Whether in the context of the economy, global events or the outlook for the future, “uncertain” has become synonymous with the times. However, when

Michigan Israel Business Bridge is a nonpro t, member organiza on whose mission is to promote business and investment opportuni es between Michigan and Israel. The Michigan Israel Business Bridge is the resource for economic development between Michigan and Israel.

Hannan Lis began his term as president in July 2012. ”I have been privileged to be involved in many areas of the community,” says Lis. “But, combining my love for Israel and Michigan with my passion for business and startups, MIBB became a natural next step for me. I am honored to work with other business leaders throughout the en re state to advance these partnerships.”

MIBB works alongside economic development groups throughout Michigan and Israel. The nonpro t board of directors and o cers come from Ann Arbor, Metro Detroit, Lansing, Ba le Creek, Grand Rapids,

Kalamazoo, Jerusalem and Haifa. But the common thread is doing business.

MIBB concentrates on crea ng business where economic sectors between Michigan and Israel overlap, including automo ve, defense, water technologies, agriculture and life science.

During the year, you can nd many Israelis heading to Michigan to visit car manufacturers and suppliers. It surprises most people to learn that Israel has more than 350 automo ve suppliers, and most of them do business in Europe and the US.

“Our job is to show them the reason to expand their business by se ng up warehousing and sales o ces here, where

the auto industry is a drive away, not a plane ride,” says Pam Lippi , MIBB execu ve director.

Over the past ve years, MIBB has worked with Israeli government groups to bring in delega ons in life science, water technologies and more than 100 automo ve engineers during four separate missions.

Through a wide network, MIBB members touch hundreds of companies here in Michigan and Israel, making introduc ons that serve as the rst step toward business, research and investment.

MIBB was proud to be the conduit to many mee ngs during Gov. Rick Snyder’s recent mission to Israel.

“It is impossible to go to Israel without learning about the high-tech industry,” said Lis, who par cipated in the mission along with Lippi . “We, at MIBB, were pleased to present the governor with opportuni es to meet CEOs, both one-on-one and within industry groups, to present the bene ts of expanding their companies in Michigan. Mee ng with the governor and Mike Finney, the CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Company, showed more than 100 CEOs, researchers and engineers the importance the state of Michigan places on trade with Israel.”

The Michigan Israel Business Bridge presents educa onal programs all year long, showcasing opportuni es for business, research partnerships and investment opportuni es. Making connec ons is what the organiza on is all about.

“One of the best ways to introduce Michigan to Israeli startups is by giving them introduc ons into the investment community,” says Joseph Ben-Gal, member of the Board of Directors and treasurer of MIBB. “Using our vast network to make the correct introduc ons is key. As more and more companies visit Michigan, the word is spreading that we are serious about doing business with Israel.”

MIBB’s members come from automo ve, manufacturing, banking, legal and many high-tech industries, so one phone call or email can create the right connec on. MIBB

Building BridgesMichigan Israel Business Bridge connects businesses in Michigan and Israel.

Michigan And Israel Announce MOUThe State of Michigan and the State of Israel are putting the fi nishing touches on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two to establish a competitive project fund for joint Michigan – Israel research and development. A direct outcome of Gov. Rick Snyder’s trip to Israel, this fund will encourage joint b2b and research between both industries and universities.

member companies work with Israeli companies each and every day, from those that have the largest injec on molding machine in North America to others who use nanotechnology to change the world.

The establishment of the MIBB Educa onal Founda on has been a behind-the-scenes game changer as well. There are many people who may not have a membership t for the Michigan Israel Business Bridge, but want to support the work it is doing to educate and spread the importance of teaming with Israeli companies.

“A dona on to the MIBB Educa onal Founda on is a great way to make a tax-deduc ble gi allowing our work to con nue at record pace,” says Founda on treasurer Robyn Lederman. “Through community member and founda on

dona ons, we will be crea ng a new mentorship program for startups looking to do business between Michigan and Israel as well as expanding current services and opportuni es.”

If Israel is the “startup na on,” then MIBB is the best de ni on of a startup organiza on on the ground promo ng the bene ts of working with companies that are in Israel. They are in execu ve o ces all over the state — o en with people who have never considered working with Israel before their visit.

To learn about the MIBB, visit www.michiganisrael.com or contact the MIBB o ce at [email protected] or (248) 642-1701.

MEDC Weighs In“MIBB is an essen al resource,” says Michael Finney, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corpora on (MEDC), a public-private partnership that is the state’s marke ng arm and lead agency for overall

economic growth.“We see the poten al for high-

growth companies to be established in Michigan based on Israeli innova ons,” he said.

MIBB helps them provide a “so landing” to Israeli companies that seek to create an American base of opera ons.

“It is easier for them to enter the U.S. market from Michigan,” Finney says, “and their growth provides Michigan jobs.”

This past June, Finney went to Israel with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on an MIBB investment mission focused on business startups and research in the automo ve, defense, life science

and water technology industries. They met with companies that already employ people in Michigan and others that are interested in exploring a possible move here.

Finney says the trip had a lot of posi ves, from Gov. Snyder hi ng it o with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussing management and governance for an hour and a half, to mee ng with the CEO and ini al investors in social tra c and naviga on app WAZE, which Google was in the process of buying for more than $1 billion.

During the trip, Michigan and Israel agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which Finney says, “will accelerate the commercializa on of Israeli innova ons in Michigan, and vice versa. It will establish a reciprocal arrangement for us to help each other.”

The MOU has been completed and “Michigan has signed o on it. We’re just wai ng to get it back,” says Finney, who hopes it can work its way through the Israeli system in me for a formal signing in October.

Underscoring the essen al nature of MIBB to the e ort, Finney’s MEDC has signed a joint agreement with the MIBB in order to make the MOU work.

“MIBB is to be a primary resource to assist with the implementa on of the MOU,” Finney says. “Of course they will be here, but they will also be on the ground in Israel iden fying companies, gaps and needs, and will be the primary advocate for these companies to get established in Michigan.”

With its ideal mix of growing conditions, modern technology and history rooted in wine production,

this tiny Mediterranean country of 7 million inhabitants has

a fast growing and dynamic wine industry that is gaining recognition worldwide for producing high quality wines.

While small in size, Israel is home to over 300 wineries throughout the country producing more than 3 million cases of wine. And it takes a lot of winemakers to make all that wine - many of whom have extensive international experience including training at UC Davis in California, as well as in the vineyards of France, Italy and Australia.

The last component to making Israel so successful in the world of wine is the land. Israel enjoys a Mediterranean climate ranging from temperate to tropical with abundant sunshine for growing grapes. For a small country it has a surprising variety of micro-climates, and has two distinct seasons, a rainy period from November to May, and a dry summer season for the ensuing six months.

Add all this together with a dash of Israeli chutzpah and you have the makings of something special.

industry please visit the IWPA (Israeli

Wine Producers Association) at

Chai | Israel Cheese

According to Sheraton Tel Aviv Hotel’s Execu ve Chef Charley Fadida, American consumers are beginning

to expand their culinary universes by enjoy-ing the unique tastes associated with Israeli cheeses.

Fadida has garnered rave reviews from tens of thousands of foreign tourists and local connoisseurs of ne food. On a daily basis, he prepares a mélange of gastronomic experiences and is fascinated by the feed-back he receives about certain products, especially during breakfast.

“I serve Labaneh (a Mediterranean cheese), with za’atar (a Middle Eastern herb) and oil and foreign tourists, especially from North America, will come up to me and ask me about the cheese,” Fadida said.

“They’ll say, ‘You know, this Labaneh cheese tasted a bit sour at rst, but I kept on ea ng it and learned to love the taste of it. It’s a wow!’”

Fadida claims that the Holy Land is blessed with both good cow farms and quality dairy cra smen.

“It’s no secret that the cows in Israel produce high-quality milk, which has every-thing to do with what they eat, the weather and the temperature,” he said.

“When it comes to producing many of the so cheeses and other so cheese spreads, we are able to produce it quickly with state-of-the-art technology and high quality ingredients.

“Specialty cheeses, like Labaneh and Kashkaval (a European-style hard cheese

made of sheep’s milk), are in many cases an art form and have their own personalized blueprint, or as we say in Hebrew: Torah shlaima.”

Tnuva, the largest purveyor of kosher food and dairy products in the world, is cur-rently o ering a variety of dairy and cheese products in stores across the USA.

“The global trend toward adding Mediterranean dairy and cheese products to daily diets has inspired us to introduce some of our nest products,” said Yoram Behiri, president of Tnuva USA.

“And, you don’t have to be a tourist to actually enjoy what an Israeli hotel chef puts out at the breakfast table because the very same products are now available in your local supermarket.”

Today we continue to stand againstevery form of anti-Semitism and support the right of theJewish people to live in their ancient homeland, Israel.

F riends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) is a nonpro t organiza on dedicated to the wellbeing of Israel’s

young soldiers as well as wounded veterans and the families of fallen soldiers. FIDF was established in 1981 by a group of Holocaust survivors, a pillar of American support for the IDF, just as the rst prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, had envisioned. These days, the organiza on operates 15 regional o ces throughout the United States and Panama.

FIDF’s projects and programs touch on numerous aspects of the soldiers’ lives. FIDF’s educa on programs, for example, focus on various communi es within the IDF, helping them advance in the army and opening doors for their future. One such program is the IMPACT! Scholarship Program, which provides former combat soldiers from low socio-economic backgrounds four-year scholarships, enabling them to acquire a higher educa on. Recipients are also required to provide 130 volunteer hours per year of school. Thus far, IMPACT! has seen more than 3,000 graduates with its students providing more than 2 million hours of community service.

“Knowing that dear people with warm hearts abroad,” said IMPACT! scholarship recipient Maro Geta, who’s studying medicine, “cherish our contribu on and our service in the army, and are willing to give us this scholarship, it really warms our hearts. It gives us power to go forward.”

FIDF also touches on soldiers’ general wellbeing with programs like DIGNITY, which provides assistance to soldiers in need. One out of ve soldiers is in need of nancial assistance, with 3,000 soldiers eligible for welfare funds because of their parents’ low income. FIDF provides as many as 8,000

soldiers with food vouchers, nancial grants, purchase of basic appliances like stoves and beds and more every year, so they can focus on their mission knowing their families are taken care of.

Another community of soldiers FIDF assists is its brave Lone Soldiers, who’ve le their families and everything they know to make aliyah and serve in the IDF. For these soldiers, as many as 2,800 serving at any given me, service is even more challenging. FIDF o ers an array of assistance such as gi packages, places to celebrate holidays and Shabbat

meals, nancial grants for star ng a life in Israel, ights to visit their families and more, reminding them that despite the distance from family and their countries of origin, they are truly never alone.

“I know that the slogan of FIDF is Their Job is to Look A er Israel. Ours is to Look A er Them,” said Cpl. Brandon Berry, Israeli Navy Lone Soldier, “but you know it’s really true — they honestly take care of us. It means a lot.”

FIDF helps IDF soldiers in a mul tude of ways, never forge ng wounded veterans and families who’ve lost a loved one during their IDF service as well. Its support touches the lives of thousands throughout Israel, reinforcing the powerful bond between the Jewish community in the U.S. and the State of Israel through the support of its soldiers.

The IDF soldiers look a er Israel. It is our duty to look a er them.

Magen David Adom needs your help to save lives in Israel

If you’re walking down a busy street in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, or really anywhere in Israel, you can’t avoid it — the siren of a Magen David Adom

ambulance. It means that paramedics from MDA, Israel’s official ambulance service, are on the way to save a life. Whether it’s a child who was hurt at school and needs medical care and a helping hand or the victim of a severe car accident who needs to be rushed to the hospital, MDA is there for Israel’s people. Every-one in Israel knows someone whose life was saved by MDA.

While the siren is the loudest part of Magen David Adom’s work, it only tells part of the story. MDA is also a vital partner with the nation’s hospitals and the Israel Defense Forces.

Israel’s hospitals perform lifesaving work every day, but how do the patients get there? Whether they’re going to Shaare Zedek, Hadassah, or Tel HaShom-er, most patients arrive at the hospital in an MDA ambulance. When there are casualties on a larger scale, like the 2010 Carmel fire or last November’s rocket attacks, MDA leads the first-aid response at the scene and transports the in-jured to hospitals as quickly as possible. These same hospitals also rely on MDA for blood used in transfusions. As the provider and protector of Israel’s blood supply, MDA collects, tests, stores, and distributes nearly all of Israel’s blood.

As a major resource to the Israel Defense Forces, MDA trains the IDF’s medics. And when soldiers are injured, MDA paramedics run onto the

battlefield, at great risk to their own lives, to evacuate soldiers to the hospital. MDA also provides 100 percent of the blood supply for the IDF.

MDA is mandated by the government to provide these services to the entire nation, but it’s not government-funded. Instead, MDA relies on its 13,000 volunteers and supporters around the world. And it’s not just Israelis riding MDA ambulances. People from all over often join Israeli paramedics as volunteers, including more than 40 young adults from Michigan during the past eight years.

There is a grand history of support for the lifesaving work of MDA from our community. Since 1967, Detroit-area supporters have raised over $31 million for more than 200 ambulances, emergency medical stations, paramedic scholarships, and more.

The ever-changing climate in the Middle East requires MDA to add 100 new ambulances this year. The Dr. John J. Mames Chapter — Michigan Region of American Friends of Magen David Adom is raising funds to help meet this need, including ambulances in honor of “Go Blue!” and “Go Spartans!”

You can help sponsor these ambulances by calling 1.877.405.3913 or donating online at tinyurl.com/Michigan-mda.

Through your donation, you will be saving lives in Israel. Todah rabah, thank you.
