CEDP Welcome Note,Welcome to the College Educator Development Program (CEDP). Whether you are new to the teaching profession or have several years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level, becoming a full-time faculty member at your college means a new role with new responsibilities and expertise to be developed.

The CEDP Planning and Facilitation Teams are thrilled to welcome you to Phase 1 at Fanshawe College in London. We have organized an engaging and informative program that we hope will foster your growth as a College educator in highly practical and meaningful ways. Much of what is gained through CEDP comes from our collective sharing of experiences, anecdotes and the insights that we’ve gained through the process of educating others. Phase 1 asks us to critically reflect on our role as teachers and to explore the benefits of building active learning strategies into our lesson plans and our classroom management practices.

In addition to our stellar group of CEDP Facilitators, we will also be joined by:

Keynote speaker, Dr. Joe Kim, Associate Professor in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University.

Special guest, Kelley Hoyt, Teaching and Learning Consultant, International Education at Mohawk College.

This brochure contains a detailed schedule for Phase 1 and descriptions of all sessions and activities. Please read the workshop descriptions carefully before you begin the registration process. Of the six workshops, you will select the two workshops you are most interested in attending. Program registration and workshop selections can be completed using the link in the Registration section of this brochure.

Register online using this Registration Link. The deadline for registration is August 3rd, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. If you need to register after this date, please connect with your Planning Team member.

If you are able, please bring your own device with you to use throughout the phase. A computer lab will be available throughout the phase but laptops, iPads, tablets, and smart phones can be useful in the workshops and learning team sessions.

At the end of each day, you will receive an online evaluation so you can provide feedback for the day. The Planning Team is committed to the continued evolution of CEDP and your feedback is a vital to inform the improvement process.

The CEDP Planning and Facilitation Teams are looking forward to working with you during Phase 1.

Opening KeynoteDr. Joe Kim

Tuesday, August 14th

10:30 am – 12:00 pm

MOTIVATING DURABLE LEARNING: Focused attention through instructional designCognitive scientists have been systematically studying processes such as attention, memory and learning for more than 150 years. This rich resource of knowledge has been only recently applied to developing evidence-based interventions in education. A key focus of this research has been to promote learning that is durable – extending beyond short-term testing into long-term retention of information that remains with the student after the final exam. In this presentation, I will discuss three key factors that instructors can implement to promote durable learning:

1. Learning relies on sustained attention. In the class, instructors can implement methods to reduce mind wandering and students can engage in practices to promote effortful and focused attention.

2. Design of teaching materials directly guides learning. Perhaps the largest impact an instructor can make on learning is to offer thoughtfully designed class materials that adhere to multimedia learning principles. Slide design that reduces cognitive load can promote student learning.

3. Study habits such as retrieval practice strengthen long-term retention. Instructors can implement effective assessment design into the course structure and students can learn to take an active role in learning and testing.

A key message in applying cognitive principles to instructional design is that both instructors and students have important parts to play in developing habits that promote durable learning.

BIOGRAPHYJoe Kim is an Associate Professor in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University and is actively involved in the scholarship of teaching and learning. He co-ordinates the innovative McMaster Introductory Psychology (macintropsych.com) program which combines traditional lectures with interactive on-line resources and small group tutorials. The program has been prominently featured in Maclean’s, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and numerous education media outlets.

He directs the Education & Cognition Lab which aims to understand how cognitive principles such as attention, memory and learning can be applied to develop evidence-based interventions in education and training. He also organizes the annual McMaster Symposium on Education & Cognition (edcog.ca) which brings together cognitive scientists, educators and policy makers to explore how cognitive science can be applied to educational policy and instructional design.

With an active interest in curriculum and education, he is regularly invited to deliver keynotes and workshops on blended learning, applied cognition in teaching practice, presentation design, and productivity. He also regularly consults on curriculum development for universities and several policy groups including the Council of Ontario Universities Online workgroup, the Innovation and Productivity Roundtable for the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Recent honours include: D2L Innovation in Teaching and Learning Award, Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2017), Residence Life Campus Partner of the Year (2012), Innovator of the Year Award (McMaster VPR, 2010), President’s Award for Excellence in Course and Resource Design (2010).

Descriptions of Concurrent Workshops A variety of workshops will be delivered concurrently on Tuesday and Wednesday. You will have the opportunity to attend two of the offered workshops.

The Psychology of Focusing on What Really MattersIn a hectic work environment where leaders and team members are being pulled in multiple directions, increasing demands for time and attention can be a bottleneck to productivity. Without a game plan, confusion, procrastination and "busy work" dominates over moving toward higher goals. Dr. Joe Kim shows how research applied from cognitive psychology can provide effective strategies to choose priorities that separate signal from noise, focus attention to engage in deep work, and develop habits that invest limited resources on what really matters.

Transition to Teaching Panel Making the transition from expert in your trade, industry, profession, or area of study to full time faculty comes with both challenges and rewards. You have a new role with new responsibilities and new expertise to be developed. Come, listen, and talk to the panel about their transition to teaching and what you can expect to experience in the upcoming year.

Classroom Management - You’re in the Driver’s Seat Classroom management can be a major stressor for faculty and students. During this workshop, through reflection and active participation, participants will identify challenges occurring in the classroom, explore various management techniques and take away tools and strategies to enable them to create and maintain an effective learning environment

Navigating Difficult Conversations As faculty we often need to initiate difficult conversations with our students. They may be struggling academically, having challenges with a group assignment or an academic integrity issue may have surfaced. Through reflection and group discussion you will access the principles of learner centered teaching to positively influence the success of these conversations. This session will help you build the skills needed to approach difficult conversations with confidence.

Instructional Strategies: Active LearningThis workshop will review active learning strategies to develop a working understanding of what active learning is and how it can provoke student engagement. Participants will generate an inventory of engaging classroom activities and techniques drawing from the experiences of the facilitators and other participants.

Maximizing Learning for All: A Look at Universal Design for LearningAs educators we must ensure that we maximize the learning opportunity for each student in our classroom. This workshop presents Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a learning framework that focuses on ways in which content is presented, how students are assessed and evaluated, and strategies, tools and resources we can use to engage students in their own learning.

Culturally Competent TeachingClassrooms are becoming increasingly diverse and require faculty who possess competencies for teaching all students. A wide variety of teaching strategies and culturally sensitive curriculum are necessary, but even more important are instructors who are responsive to the unique needs and differences of each student. Come and explore 5 competencies that will help move us in the direction of becoming even better at culturally competent teaching.
