Message from the Principal Thank you to all parents who completed the 'Parentview' online
questionnaire as part of the Ofsted Inspection this week. The Inspection has
gone very well but we cannot share the official outcome until the report is
published (in about 2 weeks’ time). Well done to all staff and students who
did brilliantly throughout the Ofsted visit. Don't forget that term will end at
lunchtime on Thursday 20th July after our end of year assembly.
Thanks as always for your support

Science Trip Message from DJO;
Over the last few months a
group of year 9 pupils have
been involved with an
engineering competition run by Siemens, where they had to design and build their own
rollercoaster. This competition saw CMA pitted against 24 other schools from Greater Manchester.
Through the process the pupils had to be innovative, creative and show flair as well as being
solution driven as the building
of the rollercoaster often
threw up problems. The
project has provided the
pupils with an insight into the
possible design and
engineering jobs in the future
that they may well choose to
pursue.
This week saw the final of the
competition. The event was
held at the Etihad
Manchester City Academy
Training facility as part of The
Great Science Share, where
pupils from across Greater
Manchester demonstrated
science projects that they have been working on. The
Rollercoaster Competition was very close with some
outstanding designs on display. The judging panel gave
our team a good grilling, but were also very
complementary of the design, especially the thrill factor.
Following all the positive comments from the judges and pupils from other schools our team left
with their heads held high. They have each received an Industrial Cadets Bronze award which will
allow them links to the engineering industry for years to come.
Well done Team!
Farewell from City Year UK Message from Miss Walsh;

EURO 2017: Reading for Pleasure and Summer Reading Challenge
Message from Miss Molloy
Sunday 16th July – Sunday 6th August 2017
Holland (7 towns and cities)
The biggest football tournament this summer is the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 in Holland. The
England Women’s football team (also known as the Lionesses) will take on 15 other great
footballing nations to find out who is the best national team in Europe. The tournament presents a
great opportunity for our students to read for pleasure.
“Literacy with the Lionesses creates opportunities for boys and girls to get behind the England
Women’s team, who, as one of the top four teams in the world, have a great chance of reaching
the final and winning the tournament.” (Tom Palmer and NLT)
The ‘live’ Euro 2017 story, Dutch Diaries: a nine- part cliffhanging story, Dutch Diaries, which will be
written live, responding to events on and off the pitch at Euro 2017.
Each part is designed to be a 10-15min read and will be written by author Tom Palmer.
Chapter one was published online on July 3.
Subsequent chapters will be published before 8.00am on July 5, 7, 10, 12,
14, 17, 19 and 20.
It is ‘live’ in that it will be written as the tournament approaches and begins. It will be about the
Lionesses and their progress in EURO 2017, but it will also feature a story line related to Anne
Frank’s diary and the house in Holland where she and her family hid from the Nazis.
Dutch Diaries will be written in the style of Dork Diaries, a very popular children’s book series, and
will be from the point of view of a girl on a school trip to Holland to visit the Anne Frank House and
watch England’s opening match.
If you’re taking part in the Reading Ahead challenge these chapters would be a
quick read and would count as 1 of your 6 reads.
You can visit CMA library to read the chapters at Student Work/Sharing/Reading/Dutch Diaries
Before school/at break/at lunchtime or after school.
Or you can read the chapters at home on your mobile phone/tablet. http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/resources/practical_resources_info/7815_uefa_womens_euro_2017
Tom Palmer is also writing a EURO 2017 blog. It features stories about the Lionesses and his research
for Dutch Diaries, which includes a trip to the Anne Frank House with his wife and daughter.
You will be able to find it at www.tompalmer.co.uk/2017.
Aya Ahmad’s review of
‘Under Attack’ wins a
Portico Sadie Massey
Award!
The Portico Sadie Massey Awards for Young Readers and Writers are dedicated
to Sadie Massey who was truly concerned with giving opportunities to young
people from all backgrounds by encouraging a lifelong connection with books.
The Awards aim to complement the work done by teachers in schools across
Greater Manchester and to celebrate a love of reading and writing that will
continue to grow throughout a young person’s life.
Aya, who is in Y9 at Cedar Mount Academy, received her PSMA certificate
and gift bag containing a £20 book token; a copy of Time Travellers and the
Crystal Dome, in which her book review of ‘Under Attack’ is published, and
some Thorntons chocolates.
CMA also received a copy of Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome for the
library and we were lucky to meet 3 of the 4 authors who had written a story in
the book – the stories are based on historic figures that frequented the Portico Library during
the 19th Century. Aya’s final sentence in her winning book review is so
profound – ‘A book should not be judged by its size
but by its ideas and message.’
The Judges Martin Griffin Melvin Burgess Fiona Hadfield Paul Morris
Tony Walsh
Quote from Aya “It was a brilliant experience
and I was really joyful and proud to represent
Cedar Mount Academy.
I was so excited to meet the judges and it
was wonderful to see and hear Tony Walsh
(aka Longfella) perform his poetry!”
Well done to the following students for
gaining the highest amount of Cedar Points
this week!
