Child Maltreatment

• In2011,U.S.stateandlocalchildprotectiveservices(CPS)

receivedanestimated3.7millionreferralsofchildrenbeingabusedorneglected.1

• CPSestimatedthat681,000children(9.1per1,000)were

victimsofmaltreatment.

• Ofthechildvictims,79%werevictimsofneglect;18%

ofphysicalabuse;9%ofsexualabuse;and10%werevictimsofothertypesofmaltreatmentincludingthreatenedabuse,parent’sdrug/alcoholabuse,orlackof

supervision.

• CPSreportsofchildmaltreatmentmayunderestimatethetrueoccurrence.Non-CPSstudiesestimatethat1in7U.S.childrenexperiencesomeformofchildmaltreatmentintheirlifetimes.2-4

• Between1990and2010,CPS-reportedratesofsexual

violencedeclined62%,physicalabusedeclined56%,andneglectdeclined10%.5

•  Thetotallifetimeeconomicburdenresultingfromnewcases

offatalandnonfatalchildmaltreatmentintheUnitedStatesisapproximately$124billion.6

• In2011,anestimated1,750childrendiedfromchild

maltreatment(rateof2.1per100,000children).1

• Ofthechildrenwhodiedfrommaltreatmentin2011,71%experiencedneglecteitherexclusivelyorincombination

withanotherformofmaltreatmentand48%percentexperiencedphysicalabuseeitherexclusivelyorin

combinationwithanotherformofmaltreatment.1

• Ofchildmaltreatmentfatalitiesin2011,81.6%occurredamongchildrenyoungerthanage4;9.5%among4-7year-

olds;4.6%among8-11year-olds;2.2%among12-15year-

olds;and1.4%among16-17year-olds.

• Thefatalityrateforboyswas2.5per100,000andforgirls

was1.7per100,000.1

• The2011ratesofdeathper100,000childrenwas3.9for

AfricanAmericans,2.6forAmericanIndian/AlaskaNatives,1.9forHispanics,1.6fornon-HispanicWhites,1.2forPacicIslandersand0.4forAsians.1

Deaths from Child Maltreatment

• In2011,35%ofvictimswereyoungerthan3years,with

childrenyoungerthan1yearhavingthehighestrateofvictimization(21.2per1,000children).1

• Theratesofvictimizationin2011were8.7per1,000children

forboysand9.6per1,000childrenforgirls.1

• The2011ratesofvictimizationper1,000childrenwere14.3forAfricanAmericans,11.4forAmericanIndian/AlaskaNatives,8.5forPacicIslanders,8.6forHispanics,7.9for

non-HispanicWhites,and1.7forAsians.1

• Approximatelythreequartersofvictimsin2011hadnoprio

victimizationforeachyearfrom2007-2011.1

Characteristics of Victims

• Mostvictimsin2011weremaltreatedbyaparent(80.8%).

Otherperpetratorsincludedrelativesotherthanparents(5.9%),unmarriedpartnersofparents(4.4%),andotherunrelatedadults(2.9%).1

• In2011,fewerthan6%ofperpetratorswereaged<19years

36.4%wereaged20–29years;32.3%wereaged30–39years15.9%wereaged40–49years;and5.0%wereaged50-59

years.1

•  Two-fths(45.1%)ofperpetratorsin2011weremen,and

53.6%werewomen.1
