Since this is “back to school” season, I decided to write my article about this important first day – a day of renewing some old friendships, meeting the new teach-
ers, finding your locker and showing your peers that you are on top of your game. The game of fashion and style and popu-larity. Students are “marking their territory” and the teach-ers are, too – drawing a line in the sand of discipline. (At least for the first few days) But John Winters beat me to it with his interesting back to school article in The Times Herald.
So I suppose I’ll have to fall back on a subject that I know best – the first day of school for little Joey Williams. To-
ward the end of the first grade, my family moved, requir-ing me to attend the old Atkinson School, a big two story brick building which was getting quite tired and would be replaced the following year. Upon arrival that first day, the principal introduced me to my new second grade class! “But I’m in the first grade”, I quickly reported. Nothing I said convinced the teacher that the school had made a mistake. Perhaps I looked wiser than my years, or taller, or something. But I chose to believe it was what I was wearing – my new Roy Rogers cowboy suit, includ-ing hat and guns. (Cap pistols, of course). I was “the Man”! When the students took turns reading aloud, I didn’t know the words. When we were told to write several sentences on our paper and “sign” our name at the bottom, I immediately enlightened the teacher, “I can’t write sentences but I can “print” my name at the top! After two or three hours of this “under-achievement”, I was finally escorted to Miss King’s first grade class.
Having been mistaken for an older man, I was “lookin’ good and walkin’ tall” in my new cowboy outfit. Miss King suggested I remove my hat and leave the guns in the hall. But I was still full of pride and arrogance. I continued to be “the man”, or so I thought. During the afternoon recess, I stopped by the restroom. That’s when that “bubble of pride” burst like a cheap balloon! My pant zipper on that magnificent cowboy outfit came off the track and all attempts to get it back on failed, leaving me feeling somewhat “exposed”! Even that little tab on the zipper broke off. There could be only one “plan of action” – pretending nothing had happened and “covering up” the problem. I went back in the class, holding my hands over the offending opening, but not feeling quite as “tall and handsome”. When class was over, I walked out, holding my new “leather” book satchel just below my waist, until I could get home and just throw that cowboy outfit away - guns, hat and zipper.
I’ve tried to think of what lesson in life I may have learned from that unusual first day. Number three: Don’t let someone talk you in to doing something that is far beyond your ability. Number two: Don’t pretend to look and act like someone you’re not. You will be “All Hat and No Cattle”. Number one: Never buy a poor quality, Roy Rogers, cowboy suit with a cheap zipper. It could “show who you really are” - without notice!
JoePost Script: Actually, I never learned from those mistakes. I still end up doing things I’m told I can’t do, and I may still be all hat and no cattle. But I will never, ever wear a silly Roy Rogers cowboy suit again. They no longer make them in my size!

Two other important issues e ected by the air pressure in your vehicle’s tires be-sides the quality of the ride and dynamic control is tire wear and load capacity. Tires wear because of the loss of rubber due to the friction between the tire and the road surface. An under-in ated tire will generate more heat from friction and will wear away the rubber sooner. An over-in ated tire will do the same but with a di erent wear pa ern on the tread. e part of the contact patch or tire tread that wears faster than expected due to incorrect in ation will vary with air pressure and other suspension adjustments such as wheel balance, alignment, and toe-in and the condition of shock absorbers and other suspension components. e ability of your tires to carry a load, just the weight of your passengers, not to mention a trunk or roof rack full of stu , is also a function of tire in ation. Quite o en an under or over in ated tire will not be noticeable in normal driving. It is when you are in a critical situa-tion such as panic braking, hydroplaning or sharp turning that improperly in ated tires will likely be evident. en, it’s too late.
Earlier, I mentioned ve tires. Yes, there is another one either the same size as the other four or a special smaller size called a spare tire. Some new cars don’t have a spare tire at all but have four run- at tires and come with a can of pressurized air and sealer goop to in ate rather than change a at tire. You can save yourself a lot of hassle, time, and mon-ey if you know how to PROPERLY AND SAFELY change a at tire. But, a at spare tire does you no good. I know it’s inconve-nient, but check its in ation pressure as well. Instructions to change a at tire are always in that ever valuable Owner’s Manual or some-
CAR CARE ESSENTIALSTire Infl ation (part 2) …
where in the trunk or near the jack. Many newer cars have air pressure moni-
toring systems built into the wheels and a computer display on the dashboard. ese systems are sometimes problematic, but ba-sically inform you when a tire contains less air than is recommended. More sophisticat-ed systems tell you exactly which tire is low. e best systems tell you how many PSI is in each tire real time. Still, there is nothing as good as or reliable as an informed owner glancing at the tires every once in a while to see if one may be ge ing low despite no news from the computerized system. Know what I mean? You add air the same way as in a non monitored system.
Most of that is pre y complicated for the average driver to keep up with, so have a competent mechanic or repair shop take care of your car for you. But at least you can keep your tires properly in ated. Be comfortable. Be in control. Be smart. Be safe.

What to watch for when the Viking ship sails this Fall. A er a season lled with bumps and bruises last year, the coaching sta are looking to be a much improved team. “Our back eld is solid” with the return of Benton Washington and TJ Wom-mack as the Mail carriers with 2 QBs vying for the job plus coach Walburn feels that he has some depth at the receiver spots as well. Defense will be a work in progress.

What to look for from the Indians this Fall. Bryce Gemmel will be under center with his favorite target Markel Boston with him again. Last year as a sophomore Gemmel threw for over 1500 yards with 8 tds. Tailback Weylin Orr is expected to anchor the running game. On the ip side of the line e Indians are going to young and lost the services of Junior Tristan Mann to a knee injury. However they still have Jay McKnight covering the middle for them and he should be a college prospect this Fall.

Mentionables from the Cougar camp, Quarterback Bailey Bryant. is young man is destined for greatness. As a sophomore he threw for nearly 1800 yards notching 16 touchdowns to go along with the 1800 yards. He will be joined in the back eld by running back J K Bri . Crossing the line, the Cats have strong linebacker core. However a team does not lose a player like Trey Ma hews and not feel the pain so it looks like a lot of points for the o ense. And a wait and see for the defense.

4 Ways to Createa “Cool” Home
School may have started, but the calendar and
weather still says it’s summertime. I don’t know about
anywhere else in the world, but here in the SOUTH, we call it Dog Days.
One of the defi nitions when I “googled” dog days of summer had this: Dog Days
1. The hot, sultry period of summer between early July
and early September.
2. A period of stagnation.
Anyway you defi ne it, it means Hot Weather!
Recently our main central A/C unit died on us. In
June! Before the monsoons hit! It was Hot!
Central AC has spoiled us and I know my ancestors lived
without central A/C but what can I say, I’m spoiled. I had to get creative about
how we were to remain cool while the new unit was being ordered, and get on the
schedule for the replacement.
2 WEEKS! Did I say it was Hot?
Of course, opening the windows, using the ceiling fans and fl oor fans as well
as whole house fan to pull any cool morning air through was a big part of staying
cooler, but when the heat becomes oppressive, it’s nice to add some lightness
and brightness indoors with décor.
Here are some of my favorite ways to accomplish a “cool” décor for hot days:
Area Rugs1. . Roll them up and store them away. Let the bare fl oors shine! If
you can’t bring yourself to have a bare fl oor, then exchange the fuzzy, wooly,
soft rug for a fl at weave like a natural jute, or an indoor/outdoor rug. It will
instantly lift the heaviness of the room.
Windows Treatments2. . Removing heavy drapes and replacing them with
white or ivory drapes, blinds or sheers will brighten a room and still help
control any direct sunlight that may heat up a room.

Bedding3. . Heavy dark bedding is great for a cozy look in the cold months, but
in the heat of the year, exchange them for lighter weight and colors to create
a cool breeze feeling in your home. I like to use white sheets as my topper
because they are so easy to wash and put back on the bed. Or try using a
light duvet cover without the comforter inside during the hot months for an
inexpensive solution.
Accessories4. . Reduce the amount of accessories for the summer to create
empty table top space. Then bring in a few cool blue, green and turquoise
pillows, light throws and accessories to sprinkle a little bit of summer fun
throughout the house.
We survived the 2 weeks and are enjoying the cool air that it artifi cially pro-
duced to make us comfortable, but seeing my window treatments and bedding
at the end of the bed fl owing in the breeze of the ceiling fans also helps keep me
cool.

Coweta county is becoming known not only for the creativity of its artists but also for its creative ways in dis-playing its arts, such as visual art exhibits on the walls of its performing arts centre and of its Espresso Lane Coff ee Shop. Th e latest example of this is books by Coweta’s au-thors being sold at a new pharmacy in Newnan called Th e Newnan Health Mart in a special spot called the “Reading Corner”. (See the photo below and in att achment). Any Coweta author can have his books displayed in this Read-ing Corner by contacting the owners, Jan and Suzett e Smit, either by coming in to their pharmacy located at 15 Baker Road in Newnan or by phoning them at 770-683-6771.
At present there are fi ft een Coweta authors whose books are displayed there: Swanee Ballman, Tamala Cal-laway, Jerry Hampton, Lynda Jane Jackson, Lenny Fulz, James Cambas, Suzett e Smit, Holly Moulder, Suzanne Field, Eugene Franckowiak, April Miller, Joe Dwyer, Linda Jennings, Carla Cook Smith, and Leigh Michael Hartmann. Th e books are sold by the pharmacy, which keeps 20% and gives the other 80% to the author.
Th e Reading Corner is on your left as you enter the store on shelves directly above and adjacent to the coff ee pot.

Next to this is a special table for the author of the week, who currently is Jerry Hampton, who writes under the pen name of Shanon Grey.
As more authors are included their books will be placed on shelves in the space now occupied by the coff ee pot and cabinet.
Th is Reading Corner is endorsed by the Coweta Writers Group, whose President, Forrest Schultz, is shown in the photo above taken during his recent visit.
