Gujarat National Law University

The field of Law & Economics

About The Course

2015 Subject Units

Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, is one of the premier national law universities of India. GNLU is also a nodal agency mandated to enhance

standards of legal education in 32 law colleges of Gujarat, catering to nearly 12,000 students every year. GNLU aims to advance and disseminate learning and

knowledge of law and legal processes and their respective roles in national development. GNLU offers interdisciplinary legal courses in many faculties, namely B.A.

LL.B., B.Com. LL.B., B.Sc. LL.B., B.S.W. LL.B., B.B.A. LL.B., LL.M. (full-time and distance), Ph.D. programs in law and interdisciplinary fields, and foreign law and

languages programs.

Every lawmaker is faced with two concerns: firstly, how a specific law might affect behaviour and secondly, whether this law secures its intended social goals. There is

a need to move from intuitive and subjective analysis to employing a scientific theory to predict these answers; this is what economics has to do with law.

The field Law and Economics or Economic Analysis of Law is concerned with this interface between the subjects of law and economics. It permits the greater use of

economics to examine the law in addition to recognizing the importance of law to an analysis of the economy. Today, the field of Law and Economics has expanded

and transformed areas such as property, contracts, torts, criminal law and procedure, constitutional law, administrative law, environmental law, family law, etc. The

inherent advantage of this field is that its objective nature permits the legal system to function rationally and more efficiently. Besides, it provides a useful normative

standard for evaluating law and policy.

Over the past few years, GNLU's Committee on Law & Economics has been putting serious academic effort into

conducting several certificate courses and pursuing research projects on Law & Economics.

The first edition of the certificate in February 2013 saw participation from 65 students. The second & the third

editions too showed increasing participation.

Over time, exciting resource exchange has ensured ever growing curiosity about this dynamic discipline and GNLU

has been at the centre of this defining phase for the subject in the Indian Sub-continent. Three successful courses

conducted by distinguished professors like Dr. Ariel Porat, Fischel-Neil Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at

the University of Chicago, Professor Prasad from IIT Kanpur, Professor T. Somashekhar from NLSIU, Bangalore,

Dr. Sanathkumar from Azim Premji University, Bangalore Dr. Ram Singh from DSE & others served as excellent

tutors for the subject. This, followed by, a camaraderie of shared goals led to six students visiting University of

Chicago for a Summer Course on Law & Economics at the Ronald-Coase Institute.

GNLU has also published a book, "Economic Analysis of Law: An Indian Perspective", in association with

LexisNexis India [ISBN: 9789351430278] The book is divided into eight parts, each of which touches upon

various facets of the law, ranging from an introduction of the basic models of economic analysis of law to the

specialized arenas of the constitutional law, commercial laws, torts, personal laws, crime and environmental laws.

The book makes an easy read for both students and academicians, and serves as a basic guide to laypersons

We are proud to announce the fourth in the series of GNLU's Certificate Courses on Law & Economics with an even more diverse set of instructors.

The course is a weeklong exchange, from March 6 to March 13, 2015. Arrangement for residence during the period will be provided at the GNLU Campus, Koba,

Gandhinagar.

The previous editions have provided insights into subjects ranging from Contract Law and Economics to Corporate Law, Competition Law, Intellectual

Property Rights, Property Law, Law of Torts and Criminal Law (with special reference to anti-rape law in light of the recent Delhi gang rape incident)

and their study with the help of precise economic parameters.

Due to the fortunate timing of the International Conference that follows the Certificate Course, this edition promises to be an even more enriching affair conducted

by experts from across the Globe. For more details on the conference visit

The goal of the course is to provide researchers and academics the advanced tools of law & Economics and exposure to approaches to the subject from world-over.

The course is designed to give the recipients both a holistic view of Law & Economics as a discipline and all the same provide opportunities to explore specific areas

that are affected by its application. Lectures will be conducted by the panel of instructors (given below), entirely in English. This will be done through 30-35 hours of

intensive sessions that are divided keeping these criteria in mind. Required reading material will be provided a week in advance of the course.
