Why IP switching ?IP
+ Internet connectivity• defacto standard.• multiple applications.
+ routing flexibility • scalability• receiver-driven,
heterogeneous multicast.
- but low performance routing
Combine IP routing with ATM performance
ATM+ high-speed cell transport
• hardware-based.• standard interface.
- but complex protocols• end-to-end signaling.• sender-driven multicast.• MPOA: complexity.

IP switching by NEC: IPSOFACTO
IP Switching Over Fast Cell Transport
• no ATM signaling, no ATM addresses– GSMP to control the ATM fabric.– flow driven like Ipsilon‘s IP switching.
• coordination-less setup – no hop-by-hop coordination protocol.
• flow based on high-level protocol semantics

IPSOFACTO: Flow mapping
use TCP/IP “control” messages
• explicit or implicit– TCP SYN/FIN, RSVP PATH/RESV, PIM Prune/Join, IGMP, ICMP.
• are sent on a default control VC– they are never switched, always routed by the controller.
• processed for per-flow forwarding state– add/modify/delete corresponding switched paths.
– Allows for per-flow QoS extensions.
Soft-state control at the IP level

IPSOFACTO: Advantages and Issues
+ can run in parallel with standard ATM
+ zero overhead switched path set-up
+ use of protocol semantics: IP level state
- potential high VC consumption
- loop avoidance problem
aggregation, possibly with explicit routing and VC-merge

RSVP over IPSOFACTO
• RSVP periodical messages:– sender-initiated PATH– RESV on reverse path
• IPSOFACTO:– PATH,RESV sent on default control VC– RESV used to move switched VC to
appropriate traffic class.

RSVP over IPSOFACTO: Review
• good news– easy IP multicast mapping
– RESV merge and QoS renegotiations possible
• bad news– no QoS support from GSMPv1
– only a subset of reservation styles• no mpt-2-pt VC in current ATM hardware
– limited receiver heterogeneity• VC space exhaustion

IP-Switching Proposal (IthACI)• a third and last ACTS call was due 9/26/97
– one focus on Internet/ATM Integration• the following partners submitted a research
proposal for IthACI: Internet and the ATM: Experiments Enhancements for Convergence and Integration– TC vendors: Alcatel-Bell(Belgium), Cisco(UK),
NEC E (Germany)– System Integrator: Algo Systems (Greece)– Research: GMD FOKUS(Germany), IMEC (Belgium),
University of Surrey(UK), ICS FORTH (Greece)Result:
– IthACI was rated #1 of all IP-Switching proposals

IthACI Objectives• gain field trial experience in using different IP-
switching technologies as access nodes, interconnected via ATM PVCs
• develop functional enhancements not yet adressed by various IP-Switching technologies:
– support for multimedia communication, namely quality of service and multicast functions
– integration of WAN resource management/planning
• impact developing MPLS standard in the IETF

SummaryIPSOFACTO• is NEC‘s architecture to combine ATM and IP• it is flow based and open to per flow QoS extensions• IPSOFACTO avoids using an explicit flow-setup or tag
distribution protocol
IthACI• a new ACTS project targeted at field trials with different
IP-Switching variants for a PAN European Internet over an ATM backbone (IPSO, Tag-Sw,...)
• project results are intended to impact MPLS WG• IthACI consortium is interested in participation of other
European groups (like Eurescom)
