Right now, you are holding a very important booklet in your hands. It contains everything you need to know about your first months at CBS, all in one book! Everything from where to find your intro programme and how to get a stu-dent card, to where to hang out with your fellow students.

With more than 20,000 students, you will become part of the society at CBS which emanates life and vitality. Ques-tions will pop up everywhere you turn; what is a student organization, what events are there, where do I find the library, how do I find the classroom or how can I get in-volved?

With this booklet, we are offering a helping hand and trying to answer some of your questions, so that you can keep track of what is going on. One thing we, for certain, can say, is that you will not be bored when you are a CBS student!

We are representing CBS Students, the Student Union at CBS; we are YOUR voice at CBS, and we are all voluntary students, working for the students. We made this book, we planned the introduction for all you new students, we cre-ate events and activities in our network organization, and we play an active part in the decisions at CBS and much, much more.

All of this we do because we want to make CBS an amaz-ing place to study – even better than it is today.

Remember to join your intro programme in August, the first day of school on September 1st, and of course the se-mester start party on September 4th, where you will meet many of your fellow students, with whom you will spend the next three years.

Again, welcome to CBS. We cannot wait to meet you!

Dear new student: Welcome to Copenhagen Business School!

Congratulations on your admission to CBS – one of the largest business schools in Europe. You are about to em-bark on a very exciting and inspiring venture that will not only build the foundation for your future career, but most likely also affect you for the rest of your life.

CBS has many qualities that make me proud, but the one thing that I’d like to emphasize is our students; your fel-

low new students, our current students, and

our alumni. The stu-dent population

is a significant

strength to our university, bringing entrepreneurship and tremendous vitality to our activities. As a CBS student you will walk in the footsteps of some of the most engaged stu-dents I have worked with.

You face a challenging time of your life, with many new and exciting opportunities, and keeping focus can some-times be an effort. To put my two cents in, I would like to encourage you to:

• Spend your time wisely and be inspired by your fellow students: It pays off to commit academically and social-ly and to find a good work discipline from the beginning

• Let the start of your studies be a new beginning regarding your use of social media: It is an opportunity to kick a habit for the sake of a new – and should you be inclined towards working online: We also offer interest-ing online courses

• Be open to challenges: Do not despair if you encoun-ter difficulties, whether related to choosing the right elective, finding your way through the career maze or picking the perfect topic for the bachelor assignment. Learn from each other and make use of the tutors, study counsellors, fellow students and teachers; you are part of creating a prosperous and inclusive study environment

• Profit from CBS’ close relationship with the business community: Take the chance to participate in case competitions and the many events that will give you an impression of what you are working towards

• Benefit from CBS’ strong international profile: CBS has an extensive catalogue of exchange agreements and dou-ble degree programmes, just as internship abroad is an option to gain international practical business experience

• And most importantly – have fun: Enjoy the green cam-pus facilities and sit on the lawn of Solbjerg Campus; socialize with your fellow students outside your studies. You will have ample opportunities to engage in social and professional activities that are not directly part of your study, but will contribute to your personal develop-ment as a future leader.

Once again, a WARM welcome to Copenhagen Business School! I look forward to working WITH and FOR you in order to ensure that you achieve the best possible outcome of your studies.

CBS actually started out as a privately owned and run institutionThe school was established in 1917 by a business associa-tion, ‘Foreningen til Unge Handelsmænds Uddannelse’ or ‘FUHU’, which translates more or less into ‘The Associa-tion for Young Businessmen’s Education’.

Since then the association has changed its name. However, even to this day, the association has a major stake in CBS, as landlord of Porcelænshaven and external partner when it comes to locating and electing members to the CBS Board of Directors. Under the Danish university laws and regula-tions, the owner of CBS has since 1965 been the state.

Business schools have earlier in history been called ‘shop-keepers schools’. Getting CBS accepted and respected as a university of equal academic standing to the traditional

universities has thus taken its time. The same doesn’t apply to the educations, since CBS’ BSc in Economics and Business Administration has been Denmark’s single larg-est university study programme for many years.

CBS shifts to a more international focus with new disciplinesAbout 25 years ago CBS, while at that time was called HHK – Handelshøjskolen I København – began turning its focus to-wards a more international outlook and experimenting with combining traditional business school disciplines with disci-plines like languages, philosophy, mathematics and others, in both the school’s research and education. This trailblaz-ing led to a growth in many different directions – new study programmes combining disciplines, running the largest exchange programme in Denmark and establishing some of Denmark’s first english language study programmes. At this time the school began to brand itself as CBS – Copenhagen Business School – instead of the Danish term.

This growth led to CBS starting to spread out to other areas of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg by establishing activities at other premises. Today the campus of CBS consists of the following buildings in Frederiksberg: Solbjerg Plads (opened

CBS - The Business School in Copenhagen

8

in 2000), Dalgas Have (opened in 1988), Kilen (opened in 2006), Porcelænshaven (opened in 2005) and Flintholm (opened 2013). The campus you meet today is the result of a push-start in the mid 90’s, culminating with the complete renovation of the building at Porcelænshaven (which was finished in 2009). However, the great success CBS has expe-rienced has also brought with it some negative consequenc-es. On one hand, CBS is getting more and more crowded as an increasing number of students are accepted. As a result of this CBS has had to stretch and find new places to spread out the activities. Just this year CBS has taken over an exam

hall on Amager. On the other hand, new and exciting study plans are continually popping up, which gives CBS a broad and relevant profile.

CBS doesn’t just sprawl, it also unifies In the beginning there were two faculties; The Faculty of Business Economics and the Faculty of Business languag-es. However, today there is only one. There used to be two (at times more) student political organizations, the main ones being The Student’s Council (DSR) and Moderate Stu-dents (MS) – today there’s only one – CBS Students.

This is just a bare minimum… a scat-tering of facts… about the 95 year old business school, or rather business university, that you have just started at. Go find out more for yourself – the campus, the library, the canteens and cafés, the student organizations and social activities and all the other stuff. It’s a little world of its own and it offers a community base for you, from which you can start off into the rest of the world. The world of CBS is now a part of your world.

As you may have thought while read-ing this article, there is more to CBS in particular and university in general than studying. The numerous clubs and societies document the diversity of students and there are as many unique experiences as there are students. So go outside. Grab a cof-fee or beer, and meet your fellow students!

Advice from current studentsWe have asked some of the current students at CBS what they think you, as a new student, should know. We met the students on a sunny Thursday afternoon just before Nexus; some were studying – others were socializing over a coffee, and we asked them to share some of their invaluable CBS experiences.

Oscar – Advanced Economics and FinanceLearn to prioritize your time because you have a lot of very inspiring profes-sors. Enjoy that you get a lot of face time with experienced and knowledge-able faculty and staff. It can be a lot different from what you are used to, either coming from another university or straight from high school.

Thomas & Mark – Cand. Merc. IMF1. Socialize with your

fellow students2. Keep updated on all the

information you receive from CBS, especially on your CBS-mail and study secretariat

3. When doing group work, make sure to find or book a room well in advance, because there are way too few places where it is possible to do group work

Bernard – Advanced Economics and FinanceI would tell them just to go, go and enjoy. Suddenly it's warm and sunny and you'll find yourself with a beer in your hand – there is really nothing you can do to help it. Networking is crucial and you cannot do that at the library. You have to go and meet people.

Victor – IBPTry and get to meet people, have a chat

with them and go have a beer, and the next thing you know, something crazy will hap-pen! Some programmes focus on keeping

a manageable curriculum the first year, so that people get comfortable around each other and dare to ask questions.

This gives you time to network and meet people eye to eye.

Selina – Cand.merc. IMM

It is always difficult to find the right information, at the right place, at the right time, at CBS. You have all sorts of

access points like Student Hub, CBS-mail, Facebook, professors,

fellow students, etc. I think the trick is never to worry too much about it. I have come to appreciate two simple

words when it comes to dealing with organization at CBS: Hakuna Matata!

On the first day at CBS remember to …Make a Student ID cardAt CBS, your student ID card is your access to several ser-vices at CBS. You need it to go dancing at Nexus Thursday nights and for your exams and your prints. If you should be so unfortunate to lose it, it is very important that you get a new one before your next exam. The card can also be used as a library card.

Go get your student ID card as quickly as possible – once you have received your CBS e-mail, you can create your card.

Remember to smile. On your student ID card there must be a life-like picture of you – so remember to smile. Take your picture at one of the photo posts – one post is located at the ground floor at Dalgas Have’s East wing, known as the blue end. The other photo post is at Solbjerg Plads on the first floor of the library. Once your photo is registered, all you need to do is to pick up your card at Campus Desk approximately one week later.

Find your booksAcademic Books is the student bookstore at CBS. They work closely together with the professors and are the ones

who make your syllabus lists. The syllabus lists will be found in the store and on www.academicbooks.dk. You can also register on academicbooks.dk and get a message as soon as your syllabus list is ready.

SAFETYStay safe – our main concern is your safetyWelcome to CBS - At CBS we do a lot to make students and staff stay as good and safe as possible.

Evacuation – at the sound of the alarm. If the alarm sounds, you must evacuate the building im-mediately and go to the nearest assembly point as indicated on the evacuation plan posted on the inside of all class-room doors. On e-Campus (https://e-campus.dk/faciliteter/ evakueringsplan) you can see all of our evacuation plans.

Beware of thieves – never leave personal belongings unattended anywhere.

CBS LibraryQuality information at your fingertipsYou are going to need a lot of new information and in-sights once you embark on your CBS studies. CBS Library offers a world of knowledge and world class study facili-ties to ensure that you have the best possible setting for achieving your goals.

You probably already know Google and Wikipedia and are familiar with the public library system. CBS Library is different as it offers you access to more than 100 special-ized databases containing e-books, articles, company data, market reports, statistics, and much more – information you will need as a CBS student.

On a sunny spring day we visited CBS Library and met some CBS students.

Two experienced CBS students told us that they usually visit CBS Library to borrow books or to take a break in the lounge area while waiting for friends. Today they are look-ing for books in the reserve collection, a separate collec-tion of curricular literature.

Sometimes they also use the library from home: “It is easy and efficient to search, no matter where you are.” They

add, “When we get an assignment, we use the library - and we’re often surprised by how much information is avail-able through the library databases”.

By using remote access they find anything from articles to company profiles from home. They encourage new CBS students to take advantage of the library databases even if it is a little bit difficult in the beginning. “You get access to so much more than just Google, it is very useful.”

Another CBS student currently completing her final bachelor thesis says that she enjoys the special evening atmosphere at CBS Library. ”People seem very focused, something that pushes me to work harder.” She has made a booking for one of the Bloomberg terminals available in the library as she needs information about share prices for her assignment. They all enjoy the stylish library and even if students sometimes compete for study seats they are satisfied with what the library has to offer. And, as one of them adds, it is nice that you can always get help from a librarian on the phone, by chat or in person.

Visit e-campus.dk/library to see all CBS Library services, to register as a patron, or to book a study group room or study seat.

So much more than just Google!

We promised CBS Library to let you know, that they are looking forward to meeting you and your new fellow students.

FOR YOUR STUDY PROGRAMME

Join the social life at CBS At CBS, there is a variety of different student organizations, gathered around different interests. You are always welcome to engage yourself in one of the student organizations or even to start your own. Being a member of a student organization is a perfect way to share interests, meet new people or perhaps learn about the business aspects within a small organization.

The Internationals

The internationals are exchange students or students from CBS with an interest in cultural differ-ences and intercultural commu-nication. The internationals are open-minded people and visionary in terms of thinking of the world as a globalised market. At CBS you will find them at:

TheSuitsThe classic stereotype of a male CBS student: a corporate blue shirt, dark blazer jacket with a pair of matching pants with the razor sharp creases, and not to forget – the tie. The girls on the other hand – well you can hear them click clack their way down the halls of Solbjerg Plads in their 4-inch stilettos. Even though

they do look beautiful, it’s not all about the looks. These students are smart. They are the real A-list stu-dents. Some of them might already have started their own business. If not you will find them at companies like Mærsk, Carlsberg or Microsoft. At CBS you will spot them at:

CBS Mentor ProgrammeExperienced students helping you find your way

The mentorYou will meet your mentor for the first time during the intro period and again through about five mentor meet-ings during your first nine months of study. She or he will be a dedicated and experienced student from your own programme. Your mentor will have a broad understand-ing of many different ways of being a student and many different study techniques. Additionally he or she will be trained in mentoring and helping.

The topicsThe mentor meetings take place in small groups where one mentor and about 10 students discuss different topics that are relevant to your programme. Topics include study

techniques, exams and exam preparation, managing group work, planning your time and coping with demands and expectations. The mentors will also help you understand the point of the different courses and how the different courses and other study elements relate to each other.

The meetingsThe mentor meetings will appear in your student sched-ule and the mentors will give you information in advance about the different mentor meetings. You can also contact your mentor and arrange a one-on-one meeting if there is something you need input on and ideas to achieve.

The CBS mentors are offering you a guiding hand. - Grab it!

New students meet different challenges, but all have one thing in common: you will have a lot to

learn and a lot to adapt to. Talking with your very own mentor, who has been through it all her-

1 Expectations/ambitions“Realize what your ambitions are and be realistic about it! Remember to make room in your calendar for “fun” things (working out, friends, family etc.). It also gives you energy”, says Jeppe Rasmussen, fourth semester IM-K(Spanish) student.

2 Time management"Make a timetable or plan to structure and manage your time in the best possible way- especially when you have to hand in assignments. In that way, you won´t loose track of time and feel stressed out”, says Martina Michelsen, sixth semester EOK student

3 Use the facilities“CBS offers great libraries and rooms for studying. Use these as your workplace, so your home does not become your office, but merely a place to relax and have fun”, says Sidsel Green, second semester IBP student.

4 Study groups''It is not always a good idea to be in a study group with the same people that you party with, although it might seem like a great idea-quickly it can become frivolous'', says Kristian Lan ge, fourth semester Ha (Jur) student.

5 Focus your reading on the most important“Find out how the texts in your subject are typically presented (structure, form, content), and learn to organize your reading in accordance with its object. Have focus on distinguish between important and unimportant parts of the text - you don't have to read everything! Take notes if that helps you remember the theories”, says Morten Normann Nielsen, fourth semester Ha (Kom.) student.

6 Participate"Study for and participate in class, but most importantly: Participate in one or more of the many student organiza-tions at CBS. The friends, the network, and the new inputs are indispensable ", says Henrik H. Lønne, third semester Cand.Merc. BCM student.

7 Interact with your lecturers“ Talk to the lecturer after class or during the break to give and receive feedback. Also, show interest and engagement –it pays off in the end”, says Sarah Elizabeth Marcussen, sixth semester EOK student.

8 Lectures“Attend all the lectures and pay attention to what the professor explains. The more you listen and understand your lectures, the easier it will be, when you later have to prepare that material for the exam”, says Emilio Rios Galvez, fourth semester International Marketing and Management student.

9 Help”If you are in doubt whether you have chosen the right filed of study, have problems with studying or with other things, then use the student guidance service. Book a meeting, and talk to them about it. They are very compe-tent”, says Cathrine Pihl, sixth semester EOK student.

10 Take it easy“Your fellow students are grappling with the same aca-demic problems as you are. Dialogue is an important way to learn the academic challenges in your courses – remem-ber not everyone can be top students!”, says Nicklas Kold Nagel, second semester student IMK (English) student.

We asked former mentors for their top tips for developing successful study techniques.

Student politics at CBS – creating a better university together CBS Students is our student union for all students at CBS. We are passionate about creating the best educations and the best study environment possible. We work every day to make our five years at the university unforgettable.

Without students, there would be no university. CBS is made up by us, – and that’s why it is important that students are part of the decision-making at CBS. University democracy at CBS is all about creating a better university together. Whether your specific passion is about improving your local study programme, setting your fingerprint on the study environment or influencing the overall academic strategies of CBS, there is plenty of opportunities.

What is student politics at CBSAll activities and efforts working for and supporting the objective of building a better and more fun University, is viewed as student politics. CBS Students are all volunteers engaged in student politics, we run the canteens at CBS and the student bar Nexus, we fight for better administra-tive systems, more space for student activities, increased possibilities of exchange and internships, better educa-tions and on the national scale, we work for better funding of our university. We believe that by working together we can create a better

university and a more fun study environment. Being part of student politics at CBS is both personally challenging, gives you an opportunity to develop leadership skills and is sure to give you great memories and new friends from all over the university.

How to get involved in student politics?Whatever you are passionate about there is a position for you. There are several ways to become active: by running in the university election or becoming a volunteer in CBS Students and more.

At all universities in Denmark - ALSO at CBS - we have an annual university election The Study Board, the Academic Council and the Board of Directors of CBS are all boards for which you run and be elected, -by your fellow students. This happens at the university election in the middle of November. It is a whole week where CBS Students put focus on how to improve our university with talks over free coffee, events, speeches, discussions with top management and much more. If you do not wish to run for a position, you can also choose to engage by becoming an active volunteer with CBS Students planning and implementing the election. Thanks to many volunteers during the last years, we proudly hold the national record for highest percentage voting among all the universities in Denmark!

The Study Board – Where you decide how your study programme should run! The Study Board is the governing body of your specific education. This is where you develop the individual study programmes, change the curriculum, add new courses, change exam formats etc. Almost everything that involves your specific education can be changed via your Study Board and students have equal positions in the board alongside faculty and administration. Students at CBS have a proud tradition of being active Study Board mem-bers and have successfully reformed their educations to the benefit of them and future students – that means you!

You can also show up to our Student Political council (SPC) meetings where we discuss topics like talent management at CBS, development of our studies, online learning and many other interesting topics.

Becoming part of CBS Students CBS Students is the speaking voice of all the students at CBS.

We have numerous projects, activities and events all planned and carried out by volunteer students. You can run for or help with the annual election, be part of our intro-team to new students or engage yourself in one of 70 student organizations facilitated by us, and much more.

We represent the students at every level of the university, when talking to the management of CBS, discussing with the minister of education and learning from other student organizations at other universities. In short: we are your uniform voice for creating a better, more fun, diverse and including time while studying at CBS.

If you want to join, just show up at CBS Students’ office in Solbjerg Plads, and you are on your way.

At CBS Students, we welcome all of you and look for-ward to meeting you all. When we stand together we can achieve great results.

Your path to CBS Students

It all started one busy day in September, where CBS Students hosted Student Society Day. Here all the student organizations at CBS were represented, each one having a stand. I was new, unknowing and curious about what they actually were doing. My curiosity drew me to the CBS Students stand. Here I had a chat about the student organization with a few of the volunteers.

Immediately I felt welcome, and was extremely attracted to how different the people were, that I was talking with. That later culminated in a longer talk at the little office at the end of the long CBS hallway, where the organization ”lives”. At the office I met students that had an incredibly close bond across many programmes, cities, countries, ages, life situations and interests.

Even though I, as a new student, hadn’t done any student political volunteer work before, I felt that the culture and diversity in the little office was fascinating. The atmosphere seemed open and inspiring, and I quickly realized how CBS Students sees diversity as a strength, instead of as a barrier.

CBS Students is a student organization that is good at capitalizing on the potential challenges that arise when many different people come together. There is space for everyone, no matter what you study or how far you are with your programme. This results in high creativity, lots of knowledge-sharing, and a better student environment, because in this way we get to use our different competen-cies and experiences.

- That was our path to CBS Students. Maybe this can also become yours?

Holy crap! It’s time for exams!

It can be more than a little scary to face your first exam as a student at CBS. Once you start feeling familiar with life at CBS, you are expected to excel at an exam. A sudden overwhelming sense of “Holy Crap!” spreads throughout campus in the days leading up to the first exam of the semester.

Thankfully, you are far from the first student at CBS to worry about exams. Many more have gone before you, and usually the result is not too bad. This article will address some general concerns and formal requirements about exams, which can help calm your nerves when the “Holy Crap-feeling” starts getting a little too overwhelming.

Hakuna MatataFirst of all: Take it easy. Even though exams might be a bit frightening, remember not to worry. The truth is, if you are smart enough to get into CBS (damn smart) you don’t have to fear exams at all. You’ve done it before and are more than capable of nailing that fearsome exam! Moreover, we can’t stress enough that exams aren’t everything!

Five years from now (maybe a little longer) when you graduate from CBS, you won’t look down at your diploma and cry your eyes out for not getting a 12 (or even passing) in your first exam. As a matter of fact, just receiving your bachelor or master degree from CBS is a great achieve-ment in itself and will get you a long way in your future career. The biggest problem a lot of students face during exam time is that they are overly stressed, and therefore aren’t prepared to be best of their abilities. Once more, don’t stress – your fellow students are here to help you.

Prepare specifically for what you are facingOne of the most common mistakes regarding exams is preparing by reading the curriculum and provided mate-rial, but NOT preparing for the actual exam. We all have different study techniques, and we have vastly different things on our curricula, but a common thing at CBS is that there is a formalized set of different examinations that you can face. This means that if you are preparing for an oral exam, then you shouldn’t spend all of your time only reading the curriculum. You need to actually practice talk-

ing about it with other people, seeing as that is actually what you are going to do in your exam. Likewise, if you are preparing for a written exam, it’s not enough to just know in your head what you want to say – you need to practice actually writing it down on paper.

Moreover, if the exam is a 24 or 48-hour exam, having tried at least once before the actual exam to sit down for the specified amount of time and focus on the curriculum, will be a great help for when the actual exam comes. Prepar-ing for the specific type of exam that you have to pass will greatly help reduce the “Holy Crap-feeling” that you will experience.

Cheaters be cheatin’, winners be beatin’ – Know the rules of the game! The vast majority of cases concerned with cheating at ex-ams are proven to be unconscious! Take a minute to look into the formal requirements for your exam, as it is YOUR responsibility to know them and you will get severely rep-rimanded even if you didn’t “mean” to cheat. The last thing you want is to get expelled from CBS for doing something you didn’t realize was cheating.

Pay close attention to the requirements which are posted at your study’s home pages on e-campus as well as on Learn. Always follow the rules, check up on them in advance and ask your fellow classmates or the study sec-retariat if anything is unclear.

As a student there may be situations where you don’t feel that your exam or teaching was properly handled. In such cases you have the right to file a complaint.

Read more at www.e-campus.dk/studium/eksamensklager.

Beware!Study and exam rules constantly change. Older students will prob-ably give you well-meaning advice on how to plan your studies, exam rules and student grants – but beware! The rules have changed. What applies to older students, may not apply to you. To avoid unfortunate misunderstandings which may have serious conse-quences, make sure to always check the rules yourself – in the end it is your own responsibility. You can find the current rules on www.cbs.dk/studyprogress. If you have any questions about the rules, we recommend that you contact the Student Hub – see page 20.

Ouch my tooth!Although most dentists offer a student discount, going to the dentist is still very expensive. At the school of dentistry you can get your teeth fixed, almost for free. The only things you need to pay for are the materials. To get treated you need to show up personally in Reception 3, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 9.00 a.m. After a short examination you will get an appointment for treatment.

Where to go?People new in town will experience that there are always a thousand things to do. But how is it possible to know what you prefer, where and when it is? There are some possibilities to help you achieve that. Firstly, CBS student organiza-tions are a great way to meet people who know what’s going on in Copenhagen. These websites will let you know where there is a party nearby and keep track of all the cultural things.
