The school offers a range of topics all of which are taught by a dedicated specialiststaff. The A’ level and BTEC courses on our curriculum are both challenging and rele-vant to our pupils and their future needs. All of the courses on offer will give you anopportunity to progress to third level education and our staff will be on hand throughoutyour time in sixth form to give you guidance on future educational or careers choices.

INTRODUCTION TOALTERNATIVE COURSES

BTEC’s are new awards introduced by Christian Brothers’ School inpartnership with Further Education Institutions to assist the transitionin to Further -Higher Education. Parents and students should considerthat these new BTEC awards have equal status to the traditional ALevel programmes. The main differences between the A Level pro-gramme and the BTEC programme is that BTEC’s provide for a skillsbased approach in which, the knowledge content is applied to a “real”work based scenario potentially making the learning more relevant tothe individual student. Currently our school offers BTEC’s at KS4 andKS5.

EDUCATION MAINTENANCEALLOWANCE

The Education Maintenance Allowance is a payment of £10, £20 or£30 per week paid directly to student who remain in education aftercompulsory schooling ends. If you remain in education and meet theage requirements, you can apply to receive this allowance to help youduring your time in education.

What is EMA?

EMA stands for Education Maintenance Allowance. It is a payment ofup to £30 per week, paid directly into your bank account every fort-night (making a fortnightly payment of £60) to help with the cost ofcontinuing with your education. In addition, eligible, approved EMAstudents may receive bonus payments of £100 which are made up tothree times a year, if you continue with your education and meet theobjectives of your course.

Who is eligible to receive an EMA?

You are eligible to receive EMA if you:

- Remain at a school or further education college in Northern Ire-land.

- Celebrate your 16th, 17th or 18th birthday in the current year thatyou are applying for entry in to 6th Form.

- Live in a household that has an annual income of less than£30,810 per year.

ENTRY REQUIRMENTS

Pupils from all other schools are welcomed either on a full-time ba-sis or a part time basis after consultation with their main schoolprincipal. To be admitted to Christian Brothers’ School Sixth Form,pupils will normally have to satisfy the following minimum require-ments:

1. A minimum of 4 GCSE A*-C2. It is strongly recommended that students have a B in a subject

chosen for AS and A’ Level3. Pupils must undertake to pass Maths and English GCSE if

they have not already done so

In addition, students must:1. Submit an application to the school2. Meet with the principal or a member of senior management

before entry is approved3. Meet the academic criteria4. Be committed to the school ethos and be prepared to meet the

expectations we require from sixth form pupils.

A commitment to CBS

We expect you to set the standards, not just in our school, but inthe wider community. You will be expected to become leaders with-in the school. Younger children will look upon you as an exampleand your teachers will expect excellence in all aspects of yourschooling. CBS is a school we are all proud of and by joining oursixth form you will be making a commitment to working towards, notjust your own personal goals, but also our goals as a school. As aschool community we have worked hard for five years with you toovercome many obstacles. Now, as you decide on your future, youmust consider all your options and decide what is best for you. Forover 30 years our pupils have beaten all the odds to become lead-ers that we can all be proud of. Our school has always played amajor role in the lives of the pupils and now this will be greatly ex-tended through our increased curriculum programme, our links withFE and University, our links to the local community and finally ourcollaboration and partnership with other schools. We look forwardto the challenge. CBS has set high standards for others to followbecause we have a belief that our students and community canmeet those standards and not accept second best.

Students are expected to wear the school Sixth form uniform at alltimes and parental co-operation on this matter is essential. In rec-ognition of your position as sixth formers some distinction has beenmade between the senior and junior uniforms.

CODE OF CONDUCTThe school is a community which requires some regulations. To youstudents who have decided to continue your education here in CBS andalso to those of you who have come from other schools to join our sixthform we ask that you abide by the following code of conduct.

§ The school day begins at 8:55 a.m., and you are expected to bepresent then for registration. You are also expected to be presentfor afternoon registration, and may not leave for home study untilafter this time unless you have special permission from your formtutor.§ You are expected to bring a note written by your parent/guardian to

explain any absence. Try to make routine medical and dentalappointments at time outside the school day. You may not bookdriving lessons during school time. Please avoid booking familyholidays during term times as teachers cannot undertake the addi-tional work involved in going over work with you, on an individualbasis, if you have missed teaching while you have been on holiday.While we have to reluctantly agree to your parents’ wishes for familyholidays, permission will not be given for you to go on holiday withfriends.§ If you are persistently absent (and/or late) without good reason your

tutor will give you a warning. If the situation continues we will writeto your parents and require that you sign a contract which sets atarget for attendance (and/or punctuality) as a condition of youremaining in Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form.§ Christian Brothers’ Sixth Form has a dress code. If your dress is

inappropriate, you will be sent home to change.

You are responsible for your school work and will be expected to de-velop good working patterns so that you can meet the deadlines set bystaff. Your tutor and heads of subject departments will be informed ifthere are problems. If you fall behind, or feel overwhelmed by work,discuss this

with your tutor who will try to help you to rectify the situation andnegotiate with members of staff. Some deadlines for courseworkare non-negotiable and staff cannot mark work after deadlines forassignments which form part of final AS/A’ level assessments, havepassed. Think carefully about commitments to paid employmentoutside school, making sure you leave yourself some time forsocialising and relaxation. You must not undertake paid employ-ment during the school day, even if it is a home study time.§ As a 6th Form Student some of your classes might start and finish

at times outside the normal school day or week. It is in your interestto be aware of the course structure and your responsibility to attendall classes punctually.§ Radios and MP3 players may only be played during break times.

Machines playing during lesson times will be removed.§ You may not leave school during the day without informing your

tutor. If you are ill and cannot find your tutor, you should see theDirector of Sixth Form, Head of Year 12 or 13, the Head teacher orone of the Deputy Heads.§ You are responsible for your money and valuables.§ Try to maintain a pleasant, tidy environment in the tutor bases.

Eating is strictly prohibited in the Library or Sixth Form StudyRoom.§ You may not, under any circumstances, bring alcohol, any clas-

sified or potentially dangerous substance or object onto schoolpremises.§ Mobile phones must be switched off during lesson times. Phones

which ring during lesson times will be confiscated by any memberof staff.§ Sixth Formers are required to sign the school’s Internet Code which

emphasises responsible use of this facility in the school for educa-tional purposes.§ We expect Sixth Formers to be prepared to be involved in the life

of the school and there are several events during the year whenwe will need the help of every member of Year 13 and 14.
