Athletics Carnival in the Newsroom. From the PrincipalThe Arts and BoysThe College Arts programme has been
very much to the fore in recent times, with
staff and students busy with a variety of
artistic activities and performances. As
has been frequently mentioned, it is
critically important for a boys’ school to
have a strong presence in the Arts and for
students with particular talents in this area
to be appropriately recognised.
One significant event occurred on a recent
Sunday when more than 200 members
of our community spent the afternoon
and early evening at the Swan Yacht
Club enjoying the talents of our young
musicians. Congratulations to Mr Shane
Mancuso, the many peripatetic Music
tutors and the members of the Music
Parent Group on the presentation of a very
successful occasion. Of course, a special
commendation is due to each of the
musicians who shared their special gifts
with the audience.
During this week audiences have been
entertained by three performances of
our College production, Animal Farm.
This complex drama, which has meaning
at many different levels, was presented
courtesy of the wonderful talents of a
dedicated group of students and staff. Our
young men have gifts to share in many
areas of endeavour and those pertaining
to the Performing Arts were clearly evident
over these three nights.
Special thanks and congratulations to our
College Drama teacher, Ms Rosalba Jeffreys,
whose skill and creativity overcame the

staging difficulties inherent in producing
such a multifaceted play. Thank you also
to the many other staff and students
who assisted with rehearsals, helped in
constructing the set or worked backstage
at performances. A further thank you to
all of the members of our community who
attended this production in support of
our boys.
The Music Performance Evening on
Monday provided another opportunity
for our musicians to display their talents.
In addition to the more experienced
and accomplished performers, parents
in attendance were also able to assess
the progress of their sons who are in the
earlier stages of their musical careers.
Another feature of this night was the
performance of a number of solo and
group vocalists and it is always wonderful
to see and hear the benefits of the tuition
these boys are receiving.
Our Visual Art students are enjoying
the services of a resident artist whilst
continuing to work on projects that will
form the content for our annual College
exhibition in October. In addition, some
of them are engaged in the design and
creation of a mosaic reflecting our tagline
‘Today’s boys…tomorrow’s gentlemen’ that
will be on public display before the end of
the year. The talent and creativity of our
young artists often seems boundless.
Promoting the Arts is an important
function of all schools and the creativity
encouraged through the broad
participation of our young men is critical
to their full development. I know that
our parents appreciate the selfless work
undertaken in this regard by all of the
staff in the Arts Learning Area. There are
many opportunities made available to
the boys in the areas of Music, Art and
Drama and I commend those students
who involve themselves so enthusiastically
in these activities.
Athletics CarnivalOur House Athletics Carnival was held in
perfect conditions at the State Athletics
Centre last Friday. The style of our carnival
promotes participation with a focus
upon each competitor striving to do
their best. Among the many outstanding
performances, it was pleasing to see so
many boys engaged in healthy competition
and enjoying the day. A special thank you

Semester BreakAt the conclusion of another very busy term which has included
examinations and reports, I hope that all staff and students enjoy a
well-deserved and revitalising break. I am aware that many families
take the opportunity to travel during the school holidays and we
wish each of them a safe and enjoyable time away from home.
School resumes for all students on Tuesday 21 July.

by Riley Burke (Year 11)
The people of Perth were treated to a very
special visit from His Holiness the 14th
Dalai Lama of Tibet. Lachie Hinton and
I accompanied Mr Burgio to the Octagon
Theatre at UWA to hear his address
delivered on The Importance of Education.
He is known for his wisdom and speaks
to audiences around the globe on topics
such as peace, love, compassion and
happiness. He spoke of how love and
affection is crucial in educating youth to
become compassionate leaders in the
Sharing words of wisdom21st Century. I thought for a moment
about how fortunate we are at CBC to
have teachers who offer their support and
guidance on our journey from a young man
to a gentleman and how this support has
encouraged me to strive for excellence and
look to lead others.
Amongst his humorous comments for
which he is well known, the Dalai Lama
shared his inspirational belief that our
educated youth are the key to solving our
social issues to create a more peaceful
society. He also encouraged Indigenous
Australians to become influential figures
of society but urged them to retain their
spiritual connections with their culture.
There are many inspirational people that
share their words of wisdom with others
in the hope that it will encourage them to
spread the word and make a difference. On
Monday I was lucky enough to experience
such an occasion.
“Forget your differences, love one another
and unite to create a peaceful and
harmonious world.” – The 14th Dalai Lama
of Tibet.

On Sunday 5 July, 19 musicians from Years
10 to 12 will be travelling to Singapore for
a week of musical activities.
The Music students will be performing at
the BluJaz Café and the SingJazz Club, as
well as joining in their jam sessions. The
group will be visiting the Yio Chu Kang
Secondary School and participating in their
band rehearsal. Also on the schedule are
concerts by the Soundpainting Orchestra,
Jazz it Up Concert and the Thomson Big
Band. This has members of all ages and it
will be a great chance to make contacts
from the Singapore music scene.
This tour would not be possible without
the support of the CBC Music Parent
Group, which helped by subsidising the
cost for each student, and to Mrs Emma
Tandy for accompanying the tour.
Thank you also to Mr Mancuso who has
organised the whole tour and put in an
enormous effort to make it a successful
and rewarding trip.
Familes are welcome to follow the tour on
the tour’s Facebook page.
Above: The 2013 Music Tour to Singapore

The 1st XVIII have booked their place in
the Grand Final of the 2015 Schoolboys’
Redimed Cup with a strong team
performance against a skilful Warwick
Senior High School.
The game was fast paced and hard fought
with boys stepping up and playing key roles
on the day as the team was restricted to
two on the bench for the entire game.
Congratulations to Lucas Perich who made
his debut for the 1st XVIII and played a key
role in the ruck.
The competition was tight and demanded
huge efforts from the back six who
contested hard all game. Joseph Caputi
and Matthew Geaney were solid containing
their full forward and centre half forward,
while Kyle Mirco and Sam Timewell
continued their good form from the
previous week. The pressure from the back
six on the ball carriers was instrumental
in the win as they weathered some strong
attacks.
At the other end, playing forward, Joseph
Eardley and Ambrose Ryan made full use
of their opportunities in front of goal,
while Thomas Eastaugh and Jonathan
Frampton provided targets for the midfield
all game. The composure and balance
of Tom Monaghan and Brodee Knight in
the midfield and Tyler Sorrell’s work in
contested situations gave the forward
line first use most of the game. The work
rate of Jordan Biondillo and his ability to
influence the game with pressure acts was
outstanding and he led the way for his
team mates.
Overall it was an excellent team effort
and the boys should be proud of what
they have achieved, earning a place in the
Grand Final.

Community cookbook: a call for recipes
CBC Fremantle is proud to be a part of raising good young men
of our community, who have the skills and courage to face and
overcome challenges and to form positive, mutually beneficial
relationships. The gentlemen of CBC are the guardians of the
future, and their positive male contribution to our society
provides us all with hope and faith in a better world.
To highlight the journey from today’s boy to tomorrow’s
gentleman, CBC is planning to produce a community cookbook
celebrating all that is nurturing and resilient about our young men
and their families. A timeless collection of recipes that encourages
our young men to be culinary heroes from their first foray in the
kitchen, whether it is coping with a simple breakfast for Mother’s
Day, wooing a romantic interest (it will happen!), or providing
hearty meals for their children when the time comes.
How you can help• Submit your favourite family recipe to us with specific quantities
(eg millilitres, grams, tablespoons, cups, etc, and in Australian
standard measuring) and easy to follow instructions. Your recipes
will need to be tried and tested prior to submission to ascertain the
correct quantities.
• Please specify how many people the recipe will feed.
• We are specifically seeking dishes that hold a place in your heart,
and are particularly enjoyed by your son. If your contribution is
included, your family will be acknowledged in the final publication.
• Degree of difficulty is from zero to hero, but tasty dishes with
a focus on classic simplicity appealing to all ages would be
particularly suitable.
• Recipes will need to be in a ‘cut and paste’ format, for example
included in the body of an email or in a Word document.
You are invited to contribute to our community cookbook and help us acknowledge the traditions of our College, the love and support of our families, and the journey of today’s boys…tomorrow’s gentlemen.
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 11 Term 2 | Page 15
• Your submission may not make the final book – but don’t let
that hold you back. The sooner you send in your fabulous family
recipe, the better the chance that it will be included.
• Stories about the dish are also happily accepted, for example
who passed on the recipe, which cuts of meat are best, or
perhaps a particular occasion when you served the dish.
CBC has a long and proud association with the Fremantle
community, so please feel free to mention particular landmarks
or places you shop if appropriate to your tale.
Timeline and other details
It is hoped to produce the CBC cookbook in time for your
Christmas shopping, therefore the deadline for submitting your
recipes is 8 May 2015.
The publication will sell for cost price and be available to purchase
for members of the CBC community and extended families and
friends. Please address any enquiries to Cherie Butcher at
[email protected] or 9430 2001.
