Tools and Toolkits for Adaptation
CBA 5th Conference, Bangladesh29th March 2011
Anna Ricoy, FAO
E-learning tool “Planning for CBA to Climate Change”
PresentationDeveloped by FAO in collaboration with University of FreiburgObjective: A training and self-learning tool to support
awareness raising and guide the planning for adaptation to CC at local level with special emphasis on agriculture
Target groups: o field technicians and extension staff in agriculture and
related sectors in developing countries o governmental and non-governmental organizations
engaged/interested in implementing CCA projectsLinks research-based knowledge on CC impacts with examples
and experiences on CBA drawn from field projects 4 interactive learning modules
Key features
o Each module is composed of several sequential learning sessions including interactive exercises
o Step-by-step guidance from ABC of Climate Change to Community Adaptation Planning and implementation
o Explains “why it is important” to undertake pro-active and anticipatory adaptation approaches and encourages deep thinking
o Recognizes complexity of CBA planning and implementation: not “one size fits all” but provides an overview of the variety of extension methods & approaches
o Provides guidance on how to turn knowledge into action
MODULE 1: Climate Change
MODULE 1: Climate Change
MODULE 2: Climate Change and Food Security
MODULE 3: Preparing CBA
MODULE 3: Preparing CBA
MODULE 4: Implementing CBA
Stand alone self-learning courseInteractive training sessions combined with
self-learning (guided 2-day workshops)Modules can also be picked individually and
integrated in specific courses/trainings
How to use it
Testing strategy
o Current version has been in-depth field tested in developing countries through workshops in Nepal, Bangladesh, Philippines, Sudan, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Senegal.
o In process of releasing final version of the tool based on feedback from testing
Dissemination strategy
o Stand-alone version of the tool freely available on the web:
www.fao.org/climatechange/learningin English and FrenchSpanish version upcoming... or CD-version can also be ordered
free of charge at [email protected]
o Two-day workshops combining self-learning with interactive training organized upon requesto Promotion through UN Platforms (UNCC Learn, ILM,....)
Lessons learned for wider replication
o CBA is a complex, iterative learning process, that builds on what already exists
o Outreach and sustainability are crucialo CBA alone cannot drive large scale adaptation processes
in the long runo Adaptation does not happen in isolation: it is an
integrated and ongoing aspect of the overall development context
CBA must become an integrated, regular part of development planning
o Moving from testing to replication and outreach
o Enhancing existing services to better respond to additional needs for adaptation
o Embedding CBA into development planningo Drawing lessons to inform the policy process
Key challenges related to upscaling
Thank you!
