As an industry leader, Belden understands thefundamental importance of the data center —its mission-critical applications, equipment andsystems that support all business operations. We also understand that today’s data centersare faced with a new challenge — reducingpower consumption. Electricity needed to runand cool the increasing amount of more powerfuldata center equipment is at an all time high, causing high costs and a significant impact onthe environment. Consequently, data centermanagers are finding themselves restricted bypower, cooling and space limitations yet stillneeding to support increasing applications, transmission speeds, storage, uptimeand scalability.

With a keen eye on today’s data center challengesand the movement to build sustainable LEED-certified facilities, Belden has leveraged theirexpertise to design data center solutions thatare unique in their ability to provide optimalperformance, density and manageability whilesimultaneously enhancing energy-efficiency,reducing environmental impact, and minimizingtotal cost of ownership. Belden’s beyond-standards performance and longer lifecyclesolutions enable adding capacity, consolidationand convergence without sacrificing reliabilityor having to replace components. Belden high-density solutions cost effectively yield morespace for reduced waste, as well as moreefficient cooling and scalability. Belden’sexclusive and innovative cabling managementsolutions improve airflow, power distributionand climate control, greatly improvingenergy efficiency.

A sampling of Belden green productsand systems follows:

• Adaptive Enclosure Heat Containment(AEHC) System provides up to 30% energysavings and enables 100% utilization ofexisting cooling infrastructure by efficientlymanaging airflow and providing hotaisle/cold aisle containment.

• High-density Racking System provides 60%reduction in floor space requirements whileenabling scalability and easy reconfigurations.

• Power and Thermal Management productssave space, monitor and control temperature, and deliver efficient three-phase powerdistribution to the cabinet for better loadbalancing, increased airflow and reducedmaterial usage.

• IBDN® System 10GX® performance and longerlifecycle reduces product obsolescence while itssmaller cable diameter enables higher densities,or space savings, and improved airflow forenergy efficiency.

• IBDN 10GX and FiberExpress ®Pre-Terminated Cabling Systems significantlyreduce installation labor and waste, provideup to 90% reduction in deployment time, offer higher density for space savings andensure longer lifecycle due to performanceand reusability.

• IBDN AngleFlex™ Patch Panel provides 27%space savings per rack while facilitatingintuitive cable management and improvedairflow.

• IBDN 10GX IDC System reduces requiredfloor space, improves material usage due tocross-connect cable vs. patch cords.

• FiberExpress Ultra Patch Panel Systemmaximizes space and scalability by supportingup to 96 fibers in a 1U space, the highestdensity available.

• FiberExpress Brilliance Field-installableConnector significantly reduces installationlabor and waste.

In addition, the high performance and reliabilityattributes inherent in Belden products reduceearly product obsolescence across all signaltransmission systems and support, multiplesystems converging onto a single IP-basedsystem for better control, operating efficiencyand reduced waste.

Belden’s approach to product modularity fromthe patch panel to the workstation outlet alsoenables easy reconfigurations and upgrades whilereducing waste, inventory and material usage.

Today’s Data Centerutilizes Belden’s 10GX andFiberExpress cabling systems(Areas A-F), as well as its AdaptiveEnclosure Heat Containment systems, power and thermal management productsand high-density racking systems and enclosures. The support offices and open areas (Area G) utilizeBelden IBDN networking cable, building management/security and audio and video cable, as well as Trapeze NetworksWLAN system access points.

A Total Systems Approach

Belden’s portfolio of data center solutionsencompasses best-in-class products and systems, all perfectly “tuned” to operate together as acomplete, end-to-end solution.

Following the principles of Belden’s TotalEnterprise Networks (TENs) solutions, allcomponents, including the copper and opticalfiber cabling systems, cable management, andpower and thermal management solutions, worktogether across all functional areas to provideoptimal performance, density and manageability. The result is increased reliability and peace ofmind for data center owners and operators.

Taking Belden’s total systems approach togreening the data center not only helps toensure that environmental and energy-savinggoals will be met, but also provides greaterscalability and lower Total Cost of Ownership(TCO) over years of service.

Here are some key data center areas in whichBelden products/systems can be deployed:

In the entrance room, Belden GigaBIX IDCSystem and wall-mount FiberExpress patchpanels save floor space at demarcation points, and in zone distribution areas, 10GX and CAT6+ultra high-density patch panels and distributionframes manage high-density connections inless space.

In the equipment distribution area, Beldenhigh-density solutions save space while enclosuresystems and power and thermal managementwork together to efficiently keep equipmentcool and reduce power consumption. In thestorage area network, Belden FiberExpresspre-terminated assemblies and managementdeliver high-speed transmission, capacityand density.

In cabling pathways, Belden 10GX smaller-diameter cables save space and improve airflowwhile high-performance copper and fiber datatransmission reduces early product obsolescenceand supports IP convergence and consolidationfor improved efficiency and reduced waste.

• According to the EPA’s Report to Congresson Server and Data Center Energy Efficiency, the energy use of data centers more thandoubled between 2000 and 2006, and ifcurrent trends continue, the demand forpower by data centers would require anadditional 10 power plants on the NorthAmerican power grid by 2011. With powerand cooling infrastructure accounting for50 percent of the total consumption, anyimprovement in airflow and coolingefficiencies will have a significant benefit.

• A recent study by Upside Technologies andthe Uptime Institute concluded that inconventional legacy data centers, only40% of the air delivered from precision airconditioning units makes its way to cool theexisting IT equipment. This amounts to atremendous waste in energy and excessiveand unnecessary operational expense.

• According to Gartner Group, the main reasonfor waste in a conventional data center iscaused by mixing of cold supply air with hotexhaust air, which increases the load on thecooling system and energy used to providethat cooling. Gartner says that implementingcold or hot aisle containment in the datacenter dramatically improves separation ofcold supply air and hot exhaust air and will be,for most users, the single largest payback ofany data center best practice.

For all of these reasons, Belden leads the way inthe greening of the data center.
