CAW’s 4th Annual ArtWorks Benefit for Kids An Invitation to Reach New Heights
2 3
An invitation to reach new heights
For more than 27 years, Creative Arts Workshops for Kids has been rooted in the underserved communities of Northern Manhattan.
We’ve planted the seeds of visual, performing and technology arts programs that incorporate academic enrichment, personal empowerment and community.
We’ve seen our efforts grow into kids who love art, believe in themselves, and who use their new belief in themselves to flourish. They graduate high school, get jobs, even climb Mount Kilimanjaro. And we’ve seen communities rallied by those kids and the murals they make.
The next year is devoted to branching out. Join us as we reach for even greater heights, with more kids in 2013 and beyond.

A message from Brian
We live in truly extraordinary times. There is a pressing realization that every human being, as a member of a global community, must not only compete, but also collaborate. In thinking about CAW’s piece of this tall order, we bring a sense of optimism about our children’s future and a sense of urgency about empowering our urban youth through the arts. We are all creative and interconnected; we embrace the sentiment that we are all family and can truly help improve each others’ lives.
Take a look at the triptych in the lobby of 787 Seventh Avenue created by our 2012 summer youth employees: One of the images celebrating the building’s imprint on our urban landscape is a chromosome, demonstrating the human element of the building’s design. Our students, not accustomed to a grand, corporate space, didn’t initially think they belonged there. Tenants and passers-by connected with inner-city kids, seeing them publicly take creative risks and produce something strikingly powerful. By the time we unveiled the work, which hangs next to a 40’ tall Lichtenstein, our young people — most of whom never before considered themselves artists nor had ever been employed —better appreciated their potential. Not only might they work there someday, they might become a client of one of the prestigious companies in the building. This genetic image is ironic, as we shared with our kids that 99.5% of human genome is shared by us all; in addition, physicists for the first time recently discovered that a small margin of positive neurons outnumber the negative, further validating a new optimism.
As we continue to fulfill our mission and break the cycle of low expectations of less privileged youth, our stakeholders realize that CAW helps contribute to the world engaged individuals instilled with a passion for learning and creativity, a standard of excellence, and a generosity of spirit. While studies empirically show that experiences in the arts help with skills acquisition, success on standardized tests, college admissions and workforce preparation, such exercise of passion by youth that face so many hurdles also provides incalculable benefits to both our young people and society at large.
This year, as CAW celebrates its 27 years of service, we strive to reach new heights. While encouraging our kids to look up and aspire to great things, we as an organization must look forward and backwards at the same time. In 2012, we served approximately 5,000 youth, a 78% increase over our numbers served in 2011. We’ve efficiently grown our infrastructure and capacity, while also enhancing the quality of our kids’ experiences and pedagogy and better engaging both our new and old community partners. Our goal is more than just an increase in numbers served, albeit another 40% in 2013, but also to provide a greater continuity of service to your youth: more wraparound educational arts opportunities for a child, from within the classroom to a multitude of experiences after-school, Saturdays and summer. We have already expanded our Summer ArtWorks employment to an after-school jobs program, which will reach more youth while also affording greater impact throughout the year.
We thank our board of directors, who have to sometimes step outside their comfort zone and challenge us to help us grow and ensure that we will be here for the next 27 years. They keep us true to our mission, they tackle challenges outside their personal and professional lives, and they passionately believe such leadership is worth the investment.
We also give thanks to you, our generous supporters, our superb honorees and our dedicated Benefit Co-chairs, community partners and talented staff. You all have invested in our mission — our kids and their art; thank you for making our work possible.
Warm regards,
Brian Ricklin,Executive Director and CEO

Deborah Schaefer
Deputy Network Leader CFN 611, NYCDOE
Ms. Schaeffer began her career in 1993 as a Science teacher at Newtown High School. She was the first in the school to teach bilingual Chemistry to Spanish-speaking students, giving them access to a rigorous Regents course. She went on to be a founding member of Arts and Business High School in Queens, a mission-driven institution that taught a sequence of various types of art to students in order to provide them with a vehicle for self-expression.
After taking a brief time off to raise her children, Ms. Schaefer obtained her supervisory credentials. She served as a High School Assistant Principal and Educational Administrator before being appointed as Principal of Jacob H. Schiff elementary school (PS 192) in Manhattan. It was there that she was first approached by CAW. With the creation of the “Magic with Logic™” mural on the walls
around the schools, a partnership was born. Ms. Schaeffer engaged CAW to provide the children of PS 192 with free art classes on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year, led by professional teaching artists. With such programs, Ms. Schaeffer was responsible for a positive transformation of the culture and environment of the school.
Ms. Schaefer was born and raised in Puerto Rico and made New York City her home at the age of 21. She holds a Master’s degree in public administration and an Advanced Diploma in educational administration. She is currently the Deputy Network Leader of CFN 611 in the NYCDOE.

Creative Arts Workshops for Kids
Since 1986, we’ve helped kids learn how to express themselves and find their voice. CAW empowers them with both the technical art skills and the critical life skills that help them realize the lives they want and build a better New York City.
Creative Arts Workshops for Kids is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
Creative Arts Workshops for Kids helps urban kids and underserved communities discover the power of art and their own creativity through visual, performing and media arts programs that incorporate academic enrichment, personal empowerment and community engagement.
How we change the world
19
“It’s about helping kids open up to art and other people. It teaches us to let people in and shows us responsibility, leadership, and working together. If we do that, we can really do something.” CAW student

1. Rooted in kids, art, and community
2. Rising up through strong academic, community, and youth-advocacy partnerships
3. Branching out through the creative process with robust programming in a variety of artistic media
4. Blossoming into life skills — academic, artistic, developmental and job skills — empowering our young people with cooperation, communication, creativity and confidence.
Our programs
Summer ArtWorks Young adults 14-24 years old are given full-time summer jobs and part-time jobs after school to create large-scale public art in Manhattan, starting with the initial planning down to the final brush strokes and public unveiling. They gain tangible employment skills as well as general life skills such as leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and the power of taking initiative. By the end of the program, our young artists feel empowered seeing the permanent accomplishment that is their mural and its positive impact on the community.
Afterschool ArtWorks A free, semester-long after-school program where students are paired with professional teaching artists to learn artistic, technical, and developmental skills in the creative area of their choice, from topics including Photography, Urban Design, and Journalism. A culminating project concludes the semester — kids present their work to teachers, artists, peers, and family allowing them to practice goal setting, public speaking, and self expression.
Saturday ArtWorksFree programs in multiple venues throughout Northern Manhattan providing safe, creative and engaging drop-in environments for youth ages 4-14. Focusing on the 4C’s: creativity, cooperation, communication, and confidence, the programs help kids develop social and problem-solving skills, self-expression, and artistic skills while creating a rewarding project.
Giraffe PathAs part of “Hike the Heights” held in Northern Manhattan parks, CAW’s Giraffe Path brings youth and community groups together to celebrate their neighborhood while promoting creativity, health and wellness. CAW leads kids as they create dozens and dozens of giraffe sculptures to line the park paths. Our kids get to connect and contribute to the communities in which they live.

The impact we make
CAW is an organization — a family — that strives to put kids on the path to brighter futures, teaching them that their voices matter; that they’re not powerless — they’re powerful beyond measure. Our programs serve thousands of young people every year, but our impact doesn’t end there. It extends beyond the classroom, influencing the communities we’re a part of for the better.

CAW shows us what we can learn and that art is not just drawing, it’s many things. It gives us experience nd understanding — we know we can go to CAW staff, talk to them. It’s doing art and expressing yourself, which is the most powerful thing you can do.

The community gets more responsible adults who will help keep the momentum of improvement going.
I learned I have to create opportunities for myself. It’s about showing us how to take control of ourselves and their own actions first. In my 20 years with them, I think there’s been only one teen pregnancy and many of the student are girls. I know one guy who is now a producer at HBO, who was arrested as a kid.
The murals help kids create something that makes a lasting impression; it knits the fabric of community, bringing kids together and giving them something to take care of.

Measuring our progressWe continue to improve our key measures of success, dramatically increasing the number of kids we serve and growing our revenue. Nearly 3/4 of our funds go directly to program costs, and a more developed infrastructure also contributes to improved efficiency.
We have also further enhanced our sustainability with a greater diversity of earned revenue sources as well as higher donor retention, the addition of new donors, and increased investment from our stakeholders.

Join us
You may not be a professional artist, but you are creative in all sorts of ways each day — making a presentation, telling your kids a bedtime story, applying for a new job. Learning the power of your own ideas and how to push them forward is key to success. By joining us, you can help kids who might otherwise never develop these important skills.
The work CAW does benefits our entire New York City community. With your support, we’re addressing poverty, community development, urban blight and the lack of arts education in our own back yard. And 72% of donations go directly to program costs. So your support makes a direct and immediate difference.
Thanks to you, a child who might spend her Saturday unattended will instead discover what will become a lifelong love of urban planning, or painting, or computer design this weekend.
Our community of supporters is crucial to our success. We welcome you! Whether you’re interested in becoming a program sponsor, a donor, a volunteer, or want to commission youth-created art, find out more at www.caw4kids.org.
“CAW is about the kids, but anyone who volunteers gets the same love and affection. A guy wanted to just donate a large sum. We also invited him to a Saturday workshop. Now he’s been coming for three years.”Board member

A message from our chairman
This has been a year of profound growth for CAW, bringing expanded staff, the development of new programs, and continued growth in the number of kids we serve.
Program highlights include the creation of five large-scale public works of art by our 2012 summer youth employees, two of which you can experience here in the atrium tonight. We developed several new valued community and academic partnerships, for example, Operation SNUG, The Doe Fund and Ecumenical Community Development Corporation; we even expanded our footprint with Kilimanjaro International with one of our youth participating in the world-famous African climb. We for the first time exhibited an expansive retrospective of our youth-created work, having been granted funds for the exhibition in the prestigious lobby of 1285 Avenue of the Americas; furthermore, CAW developed very fruitful partnerships with two recognized galleries: the renowned Pop International Galleries, and the emerging grass-roots Art in Flux Harlem. Our work would not be possible without the tireless dedication of our staff. We have continued to make great strides under the leadership of our Executive Director and CEO Brian Ricklin. We have also raised the bar with an addition to our executive staff. Karen Jolicoeur, our new Director of Development, joined us when we received a capacity-building grant that allowed us to bring her on board. We have organically developed our program staff, with Shannon, Hayley and Jabari all taking on expanded roles, and further enhanced our excellent teaching artist staff, and increased our cadre of devoted volunteers.
The Board of Directors and I are grateful for the invaluable contributions of
Andrew D. Levin,President and Chairman
tonight’s Benefit Co-chairs and Honorees, who have so generously given of their time and talent to our cause. Special thanks to Michael Laginestra for engaging with our mission and for his remarkable efforts toward the success of this event; to Deborah Schaefer for passionately championing the imperative for arts education in our public schools; and to Colin Thomson for skillfully curating CAW’s exhibition at 1285 Avenue of the Americas, and affording our young artists the same respect and esteem he would an established professional.
Above all, CAW’s work would also not be possible without all of you, our supporters, and we’d like to invite you to help us reach new heights and become more involved. Let me tell you how, and why: Commission youth-created art — not only because it will transform your workplace, but also because it will fund a work program for youth in need of opportunity. Sponsor an after-school program, and understand first-hand why one valued sponsor shared that visiting the program he made possible was truly one of the greatest experiences of his life. Or give the gift of your time, and volunteer at a Saturday drop-in workshop; you’ll touch the life of a child with your attention, share their pride and joy in the creative process, and perhaps find yourself changed by the experience.
While we have extended our reach, the stark reality is that there is no shortage of need for arts education, youth development, safe spaces, beauty and inspiration in the communities we serve. Thank you for being an integral part of our CAW family.

POWER TO CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS
Congratulations to CAW for empowering kids through art for over 25 years.

We believe in the power of art and creativity
Creativity teaches our CAW kids to trust their own thought processes and they see their ideas in action; they learn to believe in their ability to express themselves and to make changes. We couple this with life skills and employment opportunities, and offer a caring, respectful environment, empowering young people to overcome obstacles, carry hope, and make the world a better place.
