Dates for your Diary
From the Head’s head …….
Well, what an exciting time we’ve been having at Cavell – even in the last few days there have been visits to Tropical Wings in Chelmsford for year 2, years 3 and 4 visited the Apple Store in
Norwich for a Garage Band workshop and year 5 were evacuated for the day and had to live on the field in homemade shelters (in the rain) on rations of homemade beef jerky!!
As usual we try to combine learning with fun as it produces the best results, however sometimes it can be a hard slog - year 6 know all about that, as they have SATs tests in Mathematics and English in a couple of weeks time, so they are revising everything they have learnt since they started school over 6 years ago!! We wish them the very best of luck and hope that they try their hardest, which is all we can ask from them. A saying which stems from my childhood and can be clearly seen on my office door is ‘You don’t get anything out of life unless you put something in.’ I hope that the children at Cavell, year 6 in particular, understand that life is about working hard and enjoying the results and this applies to all of us young and young at heart!!
I am writing this while looking out at the sun shining, which seems to have been a rare occurrence of late but hopefully summer is on its way - the sort of summer where we have warm weather!! Don’t forget the usual sun protection for your child, as soon, we might have more than one day at a time, of the yellow stuff!
As ever, thank you to all those parents who have been able to support the various activities that have happened so far this term – the Blokes, Books and Bangers was a notable success, with over 40 families attending – thank you to Mrs Bird and Mrs Kelly for organising it and Susie, our Chef for cooking such ‘blokish’ food!!!! I am sure that the important message to all of us men is still ‘ringing’ in your ears – read lots and lots with your children – it’s great fun!!

Don’t forget to check out the school website at:

You’ll find lots of details of events at the school, links to Cavell Friends and lots of photos of events in and out of the school!
On Monday 23rd April, we held our first Blokes, Books & Bangers event to mark World Book Night.
Over 40 families attended, which included dads, granddads, older brothers, cousins, uncles and also some mums!
In the Scavenger Hunt, multiple choice questions about children's books were answered, followed by the sharing of a story from our new reading books. The books will now be available for the children to bring home, and we hope you will enjoy sharing them.
We have taken on board suggestions from dads to give more notice for events, and we will also try to arrange an event later in the day for dads who are unable to sneak out of work early!
A special thank you from Kate & Bobby for the superb food provided by Susie in the kitchen.
We would also like to thank Tina Boulter from Cavell Friends for obtaining the ‘giveaway’ books from World Book Night. Once you have read the book, the idea is for you to pass it on to someone else to enjoy!

Nutcracker Opera Well we did it! Year 5BH have successfully completed our opera.
After an amazing trial run to staff and pupils at Cavell, we performed live to family and friends on the Theatre Royal stage – and what a performance! The children were absolutely fabulous (as I’m sure their parents would concur) and it was great to see them enjoying it so much and their confidence shining through. The only disappointment was not being able to do it again! Enjoy the photos of the final performance.
Our thanks to the Theatre Royal, the project staff, the incredible opera singers, pianists, choreographers that all made it such a memorable and enjoyable experience- one we won’t forget!
Chapelfield Apple Store The Year 3/4PL class were invited to visit the Apple Store in Chapelfield to have a free session with the new ipad. They made music for their topic in The Titanic, and the class were all very impressed by the fabulous technology.
The staff at the store were really helpful, and the class were given a t-shirt each, and had the music they had made burned onto a disc.

The Year 2 class travelled to the Tropical Wings Zoo near Chelmsford in Essex on Thurday 26th April.
It’s a zoo which specialises in birds and butterflies. We visited the Tropical House, which is like a
tropical rainforest, containing birds, butterflies, insects and fish
where we could walk through their habitat.
We were able to get hands-on with lots of different animals, like
rabbits, giant land snails and giant millipedes! We also watched a
bird of prey display.
Despite the rain, we all had an enjoyable day.
Tropical Wings Visit
On Tuesday 24th April the Search and Rescue team spent the day with Year 5 children. They talked about their job and looked at survival skills when facing a disaster. The team brought in their rescue vehicles, and also equipment such as sound and visual equipment for finding people hidden under rubble and a stretcher for rescuing people stuck on mountains or in the sea.
An exciting afternoon was spent acting out a simulation of an earthquake; they built a shelter, then obtained the correct supplies to deal with the
weather and health and food problems. They also had their own emergency food ration packs.
Everyone thought it was a fantastic day, and it inspired some to think of it as a future career!
Look out for the photos in the centre pages photo gallery!
Search and Rescue Disaster Day
We will be welcoming a few new children this term and we are sure they will settle quickly. Our topic is a nice messy one; we will begin by exploring water, and be having lots of water play, exploring containers and capacity, looking at wet weather, testing umbrellas and watering the plants that we grow. We will explore the pond and look after tadpoles as well as help to grow vegetables on the allotment. We will build and mould with sand, and even make cement in our builders yard. Our role play will involve stories like Billy Goats Gruff and Noah’s Ark.
We are looking forward to another Reading Café where you will be invited to share books with the children, and share cakes we have made. We hope to develop the children’s love of books and reading. We will continue to teach sounds with games and songs and use our
lovely new reading books.
We will be having a class assembly at the end of term to show you the work we have been doing and you are all invited- details to follow later.
We will continue with lots of work to help develop good relationships, confidence, independence and self esteem.

This term we will be thinking and learning about different forms of transport. On Thursday 17th May, we will be visiting the North Norfolk Railway and taking part in Aunty Dotty’s Seaside Holiday workshops. The children will take a journey through time, exploring seaside holidays in the 1900s, 1930s and the 1950s.
We will be travelling by steam train from Holt to Weybourne and then on to Sheringham. Keep your fingers crossed for glorious sunshine!
This term our topic will allow us to have of range of role play areas including space and train stations. In Year 1 we are creating our own solar system. In Reception we are making lots of junk model rockets.
On Thursday 24th May you are warmly invited to attend a joint Year 1 and Reception class assembly, where you can find out what happened on our school trip.
The children in Reception will be visiting Easton College for a PE Multi-skills afternoon on Thursday 3rd May.
Our PE days continue to be on Mondays and Fridays. Please ensure that your children have a change of shorts and tee-shirt available on these days.

Flowers and Insects……..
We are springing into life with a topic of ‘Flowers and Insects’ this half term. We began our topic by visiting Tropical Wings Zoo in Essex. During the day the children got the chance to see a range of animals from big bugs to tropical birds. The zoo has its own rainforest to explore with hundreds of butterflies flying freely to look at. Check out the website with your child to find out more. The classroom reading area has transformed into a giant garden with lots of creatures to explore! We have gathered together lots of non-fiction books so we can be fact finders. Maybe you could find some facts about some weird and wonderful creatures at home and bring them in to add to our sharing wall.
We will be busy as always with reading, writing, spellings and mathematics this half term and we continue to appreciate all of the work you are putting in at home. The children will continue to bring home their reading books and spellings which we encourage them to practice for a few minutes every night.

Water – The Titanic This half term we are learning all about water. We will be finding out the different uses of water in our world, learning about the water cycle and the different forms of water as a solid, liquid and gas. As part of this topic and to commemorate its 100 year anniversary, we will also be studying the events of the Titanic. This will involve looking at what happened, who was onboard, how people lived on the ship and of course the tragedy of its sinking. Take a peek in the classroom to see our own Titanic reading corner!
In literacy we will develop the Titanic theme by looking at newspapers and their features before creating our own newspaper article on the Titanic. In Numeracy we will continue to recap on the areas that we find tricky as well as working on new areas such as 3D shapes, multiplication methods, division methods and capacity.
This term our PE sessions will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday. Indoor and outdoor kit will be required; shorts, t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms, jumper and trainers.

In Science, we will use the skills Darwin used in his
work and explore the ideas he came up with in his famous Origin of Species .
Our Literacy/Foundation homework continues to be set on a Wednesday; due in on Tuesday, and Maths on a Thursday; due in by Tuesday. As before, homework club is available on Monday evening for children that would benefit from this. Spelling tests continue on Friday and reading records should be brought in every day.
