Kartchner Caverns received its name from the name of the family that owned the land that the cave resides. Randy and Gary brought it to the attention of the family in 1978. After that, Gary, Randy, and the Kartchner family kept the caverns a secret for another ten years until the state purchased the land from the Kartchner family and the caverns became the 25th State Park of Arizona.

Kubla Khan

Kubla Khan is a massive 58-foot-tall column. It is the largest known column in the state of Arizona. The Throne Room in which it sits received its name from a poem named Kubla Khan. In the poem it describes an underground mystical kingdom “Xanadu” ruled by Kubla Khan. Xanadu was the secret name Randy and Gary used to talk about the cave so no one else could find it and destroy it.

Arizona Sunrise That first day in the cave, Randy and Gary just sat there in amazement at what they had just found. The two discoverers spent a couple hours in what they would eventually call the “Big Room”, and decided to pack up and come back later.

It was dark when they emerged from the sinkhole. As Randy and Gary sat outside the sinkhole they noticed how close they were to the highway. Both of them could see and hear the cars driving by. It occurred to the two cavers that if they had found the cave that easily, someone else could also. From that moment, Gary and Randy knew they were going to protect this cave from being vandalized and misused like several other cave systems in the area.
