One of them held up an old pattern, the kind weve collected over the years, something in brown and dark orange that I might have thrown on the free table. Then they held up the modern version with lots of clear, solid fabrics, partial blocks, and increased negative space. I got it! The pattern illustration was tested and timeless, but the modern version was fresh, lively, and much more interesting. And the quilting! President’s Message

Dear Quilting Friends, I got a real shot in the arm at the July Guild meeting. It’s fun to see who is still in town during the summer, hear about people’s plans for the rest of the season, watch KidzQuilts being turned in, and library books being selected. I’m happy to be a part of the routine. However, the program has changed my perspective on quilt design. Our program for the evening was a webinar, “Making Traditional Modern.” Karen Clark and her husband Craig took care of the technical side of things (Amen!) and the microphone leaning against the laptop speaker was tolerable. We learned a few details about modern versus traditional design. I relaxed and enjoyed the show, occasionally looking at the handout Karen prepared for us to follow and use as a reference later. Then, the lights were turned on and the real lesson began. Karen, Lynn Purple, and Linda Swanson showed some of their quilts, along with Nan Ryan’s work. Their explanations and examples were terrific. One of them held up an old pattern, the kind we’ve collected over the years, something in brown and dark orange that I might have thrown on the free table. Then they held up the modern version with lots of clear, solid fabrics, partial blocks, and increased negative space. I got it! The pattern illustration was tested and timeless, but the modern version was fresh, lively, and much more interesting. And the quilting!

I’ve started working on a modern nine patch KidzQuilt. I plan to make twenty blocks, and so far I’m having a blast. It is costing me very little time, fabric, and stress. I’m playing in a new way and loving it. I really appreciate our “modern” girls sharing their knowledge and work with us. Thank you, Karen, Lynn, Linda, and Nan. I’m sure you made a difference for many of us.

Happy Quilting,

Plymouth Harbor Show Lynn Purple

Several Friendship Knot Quilt Guild members are participating in a quilt show in the Mezzanine Art Gallery of Plymouth Harbor, 700 John Ringling Blvd. The Gallery is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The quilts range from Traditional, Contemporary, Pictorial to Modern. There is free valet parking and the quilts are really spe-cial. Drop by.

Kudos to Becky’s Woodland Creatures Becky Yoder’s beautiful quilt Woodland Creatures has been earning awards around the country. Becky made two of these quilts, and one of them earned three ribbons at our 2019 Quilt Show in March. It was judged to be the best hand quilting and best hand applique, and then won first place in the heirloom category. Becky sold that quilt at the show. Her second Woodland Creatures has been traveling. This summer it was Best of Show Small Quilts at Souder Village Quilt Show in Archbold, Ohio. It also won a first place ribbon and cash prize at the Shipshewana Quilt Festival in Shipshewana, Indiana. Becky just learned that Woodland Creatures has been accepted into the Fall Paducah Quilt show. Becky is truly a gifted quilter.

Local Guild Websites Cathy Lane

The Friendship Knot Quilters Guild web-site is probably marked as a favorite on your computer already –

https://friendshipknotquilters.com Visit it often to keep up with all of the lat-est pictures, reports, and events. It’s fun to look at old reports – take a minute to read the quilt show news from all of our shows since 2013. We’ve been busy! Our sister quilt guilds have websites that are interesting, informative, and inspiring. Spend some time looking at what they’re doing. Of course the pictures of quilts are the best part.

Careful! CathyLane

All of us have received emails that look suspicious, but are so tempting. Lately I have received emails from myself asking me to reply as soon as possible. Of course it was from an unrecognizable email address.

These emails are spam. I will never write to you asking for donations or help or an-swers without using my personal email address. Please pay attention to the email address for all emails you receive. If the email address isn’t one you recognize, report it as spam and go back to your sewing.

KiDZQuilts Jo Wieczynski, Coordinator

KidzQuilts is an on-going charity of FKQG. We provide quilts to help keep small babies warm in the NICU at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and for a parent to take home with their new baby. Many quilts are also given to needy families with children of various ages in the hospital. We recently met at our monthly meeting on July 24 at the Fruitville Library with 8 women who donated 29 beautiful baby quilts. Our yearly total is 313 given to SMH.

We welcome women to join us at the next meeting on Fri. August 16 10:15-1:30 at the library to make new friends. You may bring your sewing supplies, baby fabric to be donated and quilting ide-as. Contact Jo Wieczynski, at [email protected] or Linda Forestier, [email protected], for more information.

Guidelines for making a baby quilt are on the website, and we have labels available for your use. You may bring your sewing machine and supplies if you wish.

Fidget Quilts Do you want something easy and quick to make? A project where you can play and have fun? Make a Fidget Quilt! In an “AHA moment, I thought, perhaps what is keeping some of you from making a Fidget Quilt is that they are often not “pretty”. Get over it! They need to be pleasing to the touch, not sight. If you must limit the chaos, try: 1. using one or two colors. 2. adding sashing around the diverse blocks. 3. making strips instead of squares, divided by rickrack, ribbon and other trims. Turn in your project or ask for advice. I am at the library table. Thanks, Judy

PROGRAM NOTES Ellen Simon

Ann Moroz, from The Villages, will be presenting a trunk show at the August meeting. In Ann's words, “I'm an Art Quilter. I have been sewing for as long as I can remember. I've been an Art Quilter for many years and love it. It's so rewarding to design my own creations. With most of my quilts I know what I want the end-product to be, but I don't usually plan how it's going to get there. I figure it out as I go, which is very freeing and loads of fun!” Ann has won lots of ribbons at the quilt show in The Villages and currently has a piece in Perspectives, the SAQA exhibit in Tallahassee.

Shelter Bed Buddy Workshop

Jane Sanks

In July we hit our goal (which was to complete 100 beds in 2 hours) and made 106 beds. We did all this in 2 hours. We picked up 3 new volunteers last month and they had such a great time with our crazy group they decided to return. Our total for 2019 to 633 beds. We are always happy to have new volunteers at our Shelter Bed Buddies workshop. You get a real workout at our sessions. Join us for a great feeling of accomplishment—you do not even have to like dogs or cats to attend nor do you have to come every month. We meet at the American Red Cross facility which is located at 2001 Cantu Court. We meet from 1 to 3 pm and always on a Friday. Call me if you need di-rections. Future workshop dates are: August 23 October 25 September 20 November 22 December 20 You may call me for more information: Jane Sanks (941) 923-4240 or (941) 726-2849. If you prefer, you could also send an email to [email protected].

Pressing to Set Seams Will Improve Your Patchwork

I recently read an article by Janet Wickell, and decided to put her information to the test. I could hardly believe the difference it made!

When we sew fabrics together, the narrow channel along the seam is occupied by the thread. No matter how accurate we are sewing our seams, the fabric on each side of the thread will puff up just a little bit, and that tiny extra height, called “loft”, could become lost when it is pressed to one side. Pressing to set the seam helps remove those little puffed-up areas. Setting the seam will make patchwork lie flatter. Before you press a seam allowance to one side, place the sewn patchwork unit on an ironing board, unfolded, just the way it comes out of the sewing machine. Place hot iron on the patchwork and press. Then press seams to one side or open as usual.

I was pleasantly surprised at what a difference this “extra step” made in the look of my blocks. I hope you will try it!
