MAY NEWSLETTER Dear Families: Spring and all of the new life and renewal that it brings is finally upon us. The signs are ever present, as our students welcome the arrival of our young butterflies to be in the new butterfly raising program to the anticipation of our cohort of grade 7 and 8 students to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.  This year, the theme of Catholic Education Week is “Opening Doors of Mercy;” accordingly, the staff and students aspire to exhibit to one another and on a larger scale, people in the world the type of mercy that Jesus, Himself, models and guides our lives with. MEDIATORS

Our Intermediate Peer Mediators are to be

commended for their commitment and demonstrated leadership in keeping the school

grounds extra safe during the lunch recess hour by

empowering younger students to problem solve by thinking, deciding and acting based on Kelso’s model. In their latest

summative survey, peer mediators have zeroed in on instances of exclusion, minor

physical conflict and the use of hurtful words. Thank you to all

mediators for their proven commitment to students’ safety!

INTERMEDIATE W5H TEAM 2016

The intermediate W5H Team prevailed in their divisional tournament for Area 4 at St. Kateri in a competitive pool of schools

consisting of Holy Redeemer, St. Kateri, St. Matthias and St. Timothy. Wisdom advanced yet again in the Regional round at

OLW on April 18th. The team’s continued success culminated with a strong second place finish on April 25th at St. Charles.

Congratulations to Lucas B., Adam O., Grant N. and Dillon D. and their coaches, Mrs. Nardozi and Mlle. Caroline for guiding the

students along their journey of trivia glory this year!

TCDSB MUSIC FESTIVAL The students involved in vocal and instrumental music have had many exciting and educational opportunities to showcase their musical abilities.

On April 11th, 2016 Ms. Krzyszkowski and her grade 7 and 8 students took part in the TCDSB Music festival at Bishop Marocco/ Thomas Merton CSS and showcased a variety of classical and jazz music arrangements ranging from Foxwood Overture, Declaration and Dance, Satin Doll and Windstar.

They received the bonus of an elongated amount of time to play and receive feedback from the adjudicator.

Our fantastic choir, made up of students from grades 2 to 6 also took part in the vocal music component of this year’s music festival at Jean Vanier CSS on April 5th from 9:45-11:15 a.m. The Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School community would like to acknowledge the choir directors, Mlle. O, Mlle. Caroline and Mlle. Belanger for preparing the students and always encouraging them to put forth their best efforts.

Students performed a French folk song about Canada called Un Canadien Errant, and Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride for the Festival which is a fun and upbeat piece, half in English and half in Hawaiian. This was a wonderful opportunity for our choir to perform and receive constructive feedback from a professional music adjudicator.

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCIENCE FAIR (SCARBOROUGH) Select Students from Our Lady of Wisdom took part in the University of Toronto Science Fair 2016. We are very proud of this year’s projects.

Each year we have students who seize the opportunity to participate in the Science Fair. They give up their Saturday to showcase their discovery and knowledge at the University of Toronto Science Fair. This year the following students were chosen at the school level: Adam Orfao and Grant Nadon; Arpsima Aziz and Chantel Scott (bronze medalists); Sophie Popiel-Hirdaramani; Hailey D’Souza and Jordana Connors; and Kaiden Beckford. Congratulations on another superb performance at the Science Fair.

DAIRY FARMERS OF ONTARIO VISIT Thank you to Melissa Braido for engaging our students from JK to Grade 6 to learn more about the Dairy industry, specifically in a series of interactive presentations on topics ranging from Canada and World Connections, Career Education, Choices into Action Policy, and Healthy Living. Students learned about the journey of milk from the farm to consumers, transportation of milk products, the role of plant workers and testing and the process of pasteurization.

STRASBOURG FRANCE, LEARNING EXCHANGE

Currently, the Grade 7 class of Mme. Guirguis and teacher, Delphine Meyer are in the midst of a cultural exchange involving the examination of student book reviews/articles of Canadian Literature in brochure form, as well as, original stories about Canadian legends. Mme. Guirguis’ class is following suit with an examination of French literature with the goal of having an interactive book talk.

AUTISM AWARENESS All students at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School joined other school communities in the TCDSB system to perform a board wide dance in honour of Autism Awareness Day on April 11th, 2016. This year our goal is to reach even more school and students. This event exemplifies Pope Francis’ message about Autism Spectrum Disorders: In addition, students were involved in the creation of individual Autism Awareness Ribbons

based on a large LEGO replica display in our school’s glass case, as well as, taking part in a collaborative creation of an Autism Mosaic and daily communication of important facts regarding Autism, culminating in a school wide presentation.

SCHOOL CITY CLEAN UPDisposable gloves and bags in hand, on Friday, April 22,

2016 (Earth Day!), the students from Grades 3-8 rolled up their sleeves, in Spring cleaning mode for Mother Earth

and got involved in the “School Day Clean-up” in conjunction with the City of Toronto’s Live Green

Campaign” and the Environment and Energy Division.

Students from across Toronto are encouraged to help Toronto stay clean and green.

Students and teachers did a phenomenal job of cleaning up the school grounds in 20 minute intervals.

STUDENT LEADERSHIPWe would like to commend the Me to We extra-curricular club for raising approximately $494.55 in their “Five Pillars, One Cause” campaign, including our Me to We Civvies Day, and look forward to their future efforts. All proceeds will go towards the Five Pillars One Cause Campaign.

Joy McDonald, We Schools Coordinator, for Free the Children has this to say about this fundraising effort from our students: “Congratulations to you, your students and your entire school community on their amazing actions! ☺ Your donation will have such a positive impact in the countries we work with!”

TEAM MATH OLYMPICS

On April 2, 2016 at Madonna CSS, our very own Grade 8 student, Lucas B. and Grade 7, Arpsima A. took part in the TCDSB/TEAMS Math Olympics. Mathematics Olympics are for students from grades 7 & 8. Students were involved in individual, pairs, and small group mathematics challenges with others from various schools in the TCDSB and TDSB. Lucas achieved a Bronze medal standing, and he will be participating in the provincial competition to be held on May 27th and 28th, at the U of T campus.

Class Promotion for 2016-2017 The process for the formation of classes for September 2016 will soon begin. Creating the best possible and most functional class groupings is our goal at OLW and a task that requires considerable thought, consideration and careful planning. Our aim is to establish balanced classrooms. These classes will consist of students who will work well together, thereby enriching each other’s learning experiences. In forming classes, including combined grades, we will be considering the following: ·        Learning styles ·        Gender balance (male/female) ·        Balanced academic abilities within each class ·        Social, emotional, and physical needs of the student ·        Student experience in combined classes ·        Behavioural needs ·        Special Education Needs ·        General dynamics within the class

Grade 5 and JK/SK Reading Buddies It has been a remarkable experience to see the bonds formed and a love of reading instilled in our younger students. Every Wednesday morning, the Grade 5 class of Mlle. Christine has been reading with their JK/SK counterparts in a reading buddies program for half hour blocks using a variety of levelled French readers and reading comprehension questions originating from the Grade 5 students themselves. The excitement and enthusiasm emanating from both sides is clear and we hope to continue the exchange for many years to come!

Butterfly Raising Program Arrives at OLW

The Grade 2 and 1/2 classes of Mme. Thokoly, Mlle. Katherine, and the grade 3 classes of Mme. Mari-Berje and

Mlle. O welcome our Painted Ladies larvae now in their second instar of growth and development. The students are excited to observe and track their development from larva to

pupa to butterfly. The school will be documenting their development until they reach maturation and ready to be

released.

First Communion 2016 at Annunciation of the Blessed Mary Parish:

Congratulations to our cohort of Grade 2 students who received the Holy Eucharist for the first time as they celebrated the sacrament of First Communion on April 9, 20, 16, and 17th at Annunciation Parish. Thank you to Father Coyle and Stephen for presiding over a series of celebratory masses, as they continue to nurture our younger students in their journey of Catholic faith formation.

MATH NIGHT @ OLW Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School became a

virtual math playground with a remarkable number of families from both the Our Lady of

Wisdom and St. Isaac Jogues Community. With math passports in hand, parents and their

children travelled to each location for a new and exciting hands-on math activity problem to

explore and solve. In terms of the variety of math experiences that made fun and out of the

box thinking a focus, students built mathematical structures with the award-

winning Zome Tools and then experienced the magic with bubbles!

LEGO Broccoli activity challenged families to build a Level 4 Green Fractal Pyramid in 15

minutes! Binary/Birthday Fun engaged students as they learned a secret and important

mathematical code while guessing everyone’s birthday correctly with mathematical clues! Our key note speaker, Mr, Sunil Singh, staff

from both schools and the Our Lady of Wisdom CSPC were all key ingredients to making the

night a smashing success! Sunil Singh is a leader in North American math education. He is fluent in four math curriculums--Ontario, US

Common Core, British IGCSE and International Baccalaureate. He is also a puzzle writer for The New York Times. He has worked in a diverse range of schools-- from Toronto's

Regent Park to an International School in Switzerland. He now devotes his time to

traveling all over Ontario and giving Family Math Nights.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School hosted its 2016 Volunteer Brunch on Monday, April 25th as a part of the larger TCDSB Volunteer Week. The school community

would like to acknowledge the countless hours of volunteer support provided by selfless parents who help in the school with its special programs, sports, preparation healthy snacks in the Universal Nutrition Program on a daily basis, assistance with various excursions, fundraising and special events. in just two months our school year quickly comes to an end, we would like to thank the ENTIRE OLW

Community for contributing to the successful 2015-2016 year. With all your efforts, in supporting, fundraising, and participating in OLW events you have made a huge

difference in our children’s lives. Together we have shared opinions, ideas and laughter when we have come together to discuss issues and events at OLW. Without the support of parents we would not have been able to

succeed. Here is where CSPC and the OLW parent community have made an impact/contribution.

WISDOM WARRIOR NEWSJunior boys and girls soccer teams did a great job

at their divisional tournaments on April 13th and 14th. The boys displayed countless amounts of perseverance and participated in the most exciting semi-final game of the tournament. Unfortunately, after tying it up in regular time, and then again in overtime, they lost in a 3v3. The girls were a very strong team in comparison to the other teams and played with very good sportsmanship throughout the tournament. They placed 1st at this tournament, for the

SAFE SCHOOLS CODE RE(A)D: Code Re(a)d: learn the TCDSB’s Code of Conduct!Excerpt: “Through our Catholic values, we believe in the worth and dignity of every person and that people thrive in a safe, healthy and compassionate environment.” The virtue of the month for May is compassion: empathy, and concern for others. The excerpt says that a compassionate environment will help each person thrive. Why do you think that an environment where people help each other is what we’re hoping for in our school? Discussion Question: When you see your friend crying when you hurt their feelings, how does that make you feel? What can you do to help them?
