It left us numb, seeking answers and in many instances grieving for people we had never met. Our shared humanity and compassion moved us at this time. From the Principal

There is little doubt that we were all shocked, stunned and saddened by the tragedy of MH17, a passenger plane shot down over Ukraine. We pray for the victims, their families and all who have been touched by this dreadful act of terrorism. We bore witness to the capacity of the human heart for evil and the terrible consequences that ensue. We must never forget that this is a story of people - of the 298 people who died on the plane, of their relatives, friends, fellow countrypersons, and of all who share with them a common humanity. It left us numb, seeking answers and in many instances grieving for people we had never met. Our shared humanity and compassion moved us at this time. Each and every person who died and each person who grieves them is a person, each with their own hopes, loving and loved by others, each with commitments and plans made null in an instant. For these people we pray.

Our students response was one of prayer and quiet reflection, pausing in silence as a community. Such atrocities are best pondered in silence and shared in intimacy, not answered in a sermon. In our first response to the crash our common humanity is better expressed in sorrow than in curiosity, in sympathy than outrage, in pondering than declaration, in prayer than in cursing.

In the coming weeks and months, as questions about who, what, why, where and how are pursued exhaustively, let us not forget those family members who grieve, may they know of our prayerful support in their time of grief. Cluster Awards were also presented at the assembly. Congratulations to the following students who embodied and lived out the values of their Cluster:

Ambulance Victoria attended the assembly to recognise Dean Stomilovic for his work in administering CPR earlier this year to one of our other students, saving his life. The story was covered by each of the major news services that evening as well as the Project on Channel 10. It was encouraging to see such a ‘good news’ story be taken up by the various media outlets, sharing the wonderful work of one of our students.

I wish to finish by thanking parents and families for their ongoing support, we are heartened by the number of families attending our assemblies each Term and extend an invitation to all families to join us in celebration each time we gather.

From the Principal RECOGNISING STUDENT

Each fortnight in the College Newsletter, we recognise the achievements of many of our 'quiet achievers', those students who should be singled out for the wonderful work they are doing. This fortnight we recognise, celebrate and congratulate the following students:

MacKillop Cluster

The Mackillop Cluster would like to recognise Brandon Lowe as our student of the fortnight.

Brandon's dedication towards his studies has been acknowledged recently by the Personal Development faculty where he received a badge of excellence in the Australian Catholic University exercise science program. Brandon’s approach to his studies models to other students of what can be achieved through a dedication derived from the passion of what you are studying.

Congratulations Brandon on your recognitions of hard work and modelling of the College ethos.

Bradman Cluster

An outstanding student who is demonstrating exceptional leadership skills at the College. Crystal was part of the student contingent that travelled to Timor Leste on the holidays to work on a Scout Hall and hand it over to the locals.

Chang Cluster

The Chang Cluster would like to commend Diane (Ma) Rayos. Diane has been an active participant in the dance program at Catholic Regional College Sydenham. She featured in the Talent Quest on Feast day and has been involved in hip-hop workshops run here at school. Her talents are not limited to her dance ability. She is an able DJ and member of the technical production crew. Diane’s extraordinary dance talents have seen her involvement in the Battlegrounds Preliminary Hip-Hop competition held in Melbourne where she was successful in making it through to the World Supremacy Battlegrounds. She was commended also by a visiting

hip-hop dance teacher. It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge Diane for her contributions and for displaying the Cluster value of Endeavour.

Dunlop Cluster

Dunlop is proud to recognize Eric Sciberras as our student of the fortnight. As a member of D3 Eric constantly made positive contributions to the cluster efforts. He designed the stall poster for our College Feast day. Eric was also a recipient of an Academic Achievement Award for semester 1. He is always punctual to morning tutor and comes fully attired in the College uniform. His subject teachers always speak highly of him and his approach to his studies is second to none. We wish Eric all the best as he focuses his attention on the end of year exams and hope he achieves the results he desires in order to fulfill his future aspirations.

Winton Cluster

The Winton Cluster would this week like to recognise Marko Kristo. For many years, Marko has been a devoted soccer player to his club and always gives 100% any time he steps on the field. Marko is a very competitive individual who always strives to achieve his best on the field and off the field. When at school, Marko carries that same competitive edge when competing in Cluster sports, never missing a game in no matter what sport is being played. He is quick to help out whenever he is asked and always holds true, the Winton value of respect. It is a great pleasure to have Marko as part of our Cluster.

O’Shane Cluster

Crystal Limcangio

Eric Sciberras

Brandon Lowe

Marko Kristo

Diane Rayos

O’Shane would like to acknowledge Riley Meyer. He recently received a cluster award for all his hard work and enthusiasm in O’Shane. Riley was an active member on the July holiday trip to Timor Leste. He is always the first to offer assistance when there is any activity within the O’Shane cluster. I look forward to seeing what Riley has to offer the community in his final year at Catholic Regional College. Good luck Riley!

From the Principal—Student Recognition

2013 Australian Vocational Student Prize

I am very pleased to inform you that Danielle La Macchia has been awarded an Australian Vocational Student Prize for 2013.

The Australian Vocational Student Prize recognises the achievement of students who completed their senior secondary studies while undertaking a vocational education and training in school program or an Australia School-based Apprenticeship. This prize promotes the benefits of vocational education and reflects the commitment of schools to making vocational learning a valuable and rewarding experience for students.

The support students receive from their school communities, training providers and local employers is valuable. These students have acquired skills and knowledge for the workplace and have received an incredible start to their careers.

Yr 12 Course Selection 2015 – Monday 25 August

Over the next few weeks current Year 11 students will be

considering their course selection for Year 12, 2015. This

involves investigating how current study plans connect to a

student’s future pathways. The selection of Year 12 subjects is

an important decision and requires an understanding of the

pathways available. Students need to be clear about their future

pathways and current level of achievement and select subjects

accordingly. It is also important to note that student achievement

in Year 11 will be taken into consideration during the course

selection process.

There are a number of students who have received two or more

N results in semester 1. The school’s promotion policy states that

students must achieve a Satisfactory result in at least 75% of the

units undertaken in a calendar year. For a Year 11 VCE student

this typically means that no more than three N’s can be awarded

before promotion to Year 12 is placed in jeopardy.

Students will be submitting subject choices on Monday 25

August. This will be done at the conclusion of an interview with

senior staff member at the College.

These interviews will take place during the day on Monday 25

August.

We encourage you to attend this course selection day with your

son/daughter in order to be part of the decision making process

for their 2015 course selection.

Parents and students will be allocated a time to attend a subject

counselling session between 9:00am and 4:00pm on this day.

Information regarding this day will be sent out early August.

The College looks forward to meeting with you and your son/

daughter to finalise enrolment for 2015.
