Message from the Bishop

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I write again to you as I have done in the past to express my profound and continued gratitude for your exemplary and faith-filled generosity to God’s Holy Church in the Diocese of Bismarck.

As you can readily see from this annual report, your parishes, Catholic schools, parish and diocesan ministries, our seminarians and our active and retired priests continue to benefit from your generous gifts, and most especially from your kind and continued daily prayers.

With each passing fiscal year I am so encouraged that the many funds in the Catholic Foundation continue to grow and produce that much needed support so that all of us can continue to serve God and others with that assurance which only our faith gives us. We continue to bear witness to Jesus in our parish and diocesan lives of prayer and worship, our parish and diocesan outreach to all who are in need physically and spiritually, and our parish and diocesan efforts for Catholic education of our children, youth, young adults and every member of God’s holy people in Western North Dakota.

The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck, by its very name, tells you that this is your Foundation. Your personal or parish gifts and investments in your Foundation will continue to bear good fruit for years to come. Please continue to be generous and know that I am committed to ensuring that your funds are cared for and managed as our Catholic Church requires them to be. In the end, all that we do is for the greater honor and glory of Almighty God Who gives each of us every good gift.

Thanks to all of you once again. I entrust you and those whom you love to the loving care and embrace of Our Blessed Lady and good Saint Joseph, her chaste spouse.

Gratefully yours in Christ Jesus,

Most Reverend David D. Kagan Bishop of Bismarck

Dear Friends,

As President of the Board of Directors, it is my distinct honor to bring you this 2016-2017 Annual Report of the Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck.

Because of your great faith and stewardship, the Foundation has seen yet another fruitful year. I invite you to spend some time with this report to witness the difference you are making, and as you do, please note some of the areas where the Foundation is looking to offer more support. In this year’s report, we are highlighting Youth & Young Adult Ministry, Women Religious Vocations, and education for two missions of the Diocese of Bismarck: St. Bernard’s Mission School in Fort Yates and the African Mission in Kenya.

Your Catholic Foundation has seen tremendous growth this year, which directly impacts the number of ministries supported and at what level. Net assets have increased by $3,529,049 for total assets of $28,009,851 As a result, I am proud to say that this year we have $2,661,578 to distribute across diocesan ministries.

On behalf of Bishop Kagan, the Board of Directors and the Staff of The Catholic Foundation for the People of the Diocese of Bismarck, we want to “THANK YOU” for your continued support. May God bless you and your loved ones each and every day.

We encourage you to visit our website atwww.CatholicFoundationDOB.com or call our office at701-204-7206. We are happy to help assist in any way possible.

Sincerely, Deacon Michael Fix, President

Tip and Chuck Reichert devoted much of their lives to the Diocese of Bismarck African Mission, and when Tip passed away in May of 2017, her family knew right away how they wanted Tip to be remembered. Chuck contacted the Catholic Foundation to establish an endowment fund, in Tip’s name, to benefit scholarships and education expenses for African students

The African Mission, located in Kisii, Kenya, was begun in 1990 under the leadership of Bishop Kinney. Fr. David Morman is the diocese’s current missionary, and he has provided the following information.

At the heart of the African Mission is the Orphan Education Program. Orphans are assisted with school fees, given a monthly maize allowance, and a small stipend. Currently, 412 orphans are supported.

The Heifer Program assists parish families of orphans or widows with a cow which provides both

sustenance and income for the family. To date the “herd” consists of fifteen cows and seven calves.

The Post-Secondary Scholarship Program provides substantial assistance to high school graduates to advance their education. This may be a college or polytechnic school.

The Orphan House Construction Program was established in 2013 and allows for a house to be built for the neediest of the orphans to improve their living conditions.

Tuition Assistance to support candidates to the consecrated life. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary select five female high school juniors and seniors, who are contemplating the religious life, to be the recipients of this assistance.

The St. Bernard Mission School in Fort Yates, ND, on the Standing Rock Reservation, serves students in grades K-6. The school has been in existence since 1926 and the funds to construct the building were raised by the Benedictine monks who served there. Ninety-one years later, education continues to be a focus of the Catholic Indian Mission and this would not be possible without the St. Bernard Mission School.

In an article in the February 2015 edition of the Dakota Catholic Action, Father Basil Atwell, OSB, (former pastor of the Catholic Indian Mission) shared, “Thank God we do have the Catholic school system, because children who are being brought up in these systems, they’re not just given the ABC’s. They

are given the truth. First, the truth about their own lives – that they are creatures loved by God. And that God loves us in every facet of our lives and He gives us gifts throughout life; and, those gifts are to be used well. The fact is, there’s this moral underpinning that begins with the premise that their life matters.”

In addition to the lessons of religious and academic subjects, children at the mission school are taught about their Sioux heritage. There are 70

children (as of Feb. 2015) currently attending St. Bernard’s Mission School.

The Diocese of Bismarck is proud to administer and guarantee payment to all annuitants while benefitting the Catholic ministry of the donor’s choice, as can be seen by the beneficiary list below. A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is an income producing gift which helps the giver and the Church at the same time. The immediate benefit is that the donor receives a tax deduction, and the gift qualifies for the 40% ND State Tax Credit. Long-term, the donor has guaranteed income for life and usually more than would be had in a typical bank investment such as a Certificate of Deposit. And when the annuity matures, the remainder is gifted to support the Catholic mission of your choice. For more information about planning your Legacy Gift, please contact Matthew Stevenson, Planned Giving Specialist, at 701-204-7206 or [email protected].

Youth & Young Adult Ministry Endowment FundIt is so important that youth across the diocese have the opportunity to truly and authentically encounter God, so that they may build a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and desire to put God first in their lives now and into adulthood. It is our goal to offer a variety of experiences and opportunities for youth and young adults in order to help facilitate that encounter. Monies from the Youth & Young Adult Ministry Endowment Fund will be used for scholarships for youth and young adults in the Bismarck Diocese to participate in the regional, national and international events we offer including March for Life, Steubenville Conferences, NCYC, World Youth Day and more!

Peace & Blessings,

Carrie Davis Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries

Women Religious Vocation Endowment FundIn the Diocese of Bismarck, there are over a dozen religious communities for women and more than eighty sisters. They are involved in diverse ministries throughout our diocese, both in and outside of parish life. From food pantries, to nursing homes, to contemplative prayer, they serve us and our communities in times of need. Please help support women who are pursuing a religious vocation by contributing to the Women Religious Vocation Endowment Fund.

Stewardship PrayerLord God, giver of life

and all good gifts, You anointed Jesus with the

Holy Spirit who inspired him to give everything he had for our

sake. Move us by the same spirit of stewardship to share first to the Lord, for the benefit of all. By your grace, help us to follow in your footsteps and become more focused on loving and caring for our families, our

neighbors and our communities. Lead us to the awareness that

everything we are and everything we have is your gift.

Grant us the spirit of sacrifice to always seek your will and to

share our gifts with our brothers and sisters. May we be good

stewards of all we have received and cooperate with you in

building your kingdom of love and justice.

We ask this throughChrist our Lord.

Amen
