2  Catholic Financial Life Spring 2016

No matter how old we may be, the return of spring fills our hearts, minds, and spirits with a renewed sense of wonder and excitement as we witness the rebirth of nature. We experience a rebirth with the completion of our Lenten observance and the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection at Easter.

In this same sense of renewal, we’re excited to announce that a new package of member benefits will be added to our current offerings beginning April 1, with discounts in a wide variety of categories and from numerous merchants around the country. From travel, to clothing, to amusement parks, to auto parts – there’s something for everyone. You can read more about this on page 6.

There’s newness in other areas, as well. Our schedule of 2016 Member Events on pages 10 and 11 sports several new additions, with more being planned. The home office is also organizing new opportunities for our young adult members to connect with one another at events designed especially for them, including a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

While you’re planning your activities for the spring and summer, consider some of the suggestions for observing the Jubilee of Mercy found on pages 12 and 13. And if you belong to one of our local chapters, look for opportunities to participate in an activity and meet fellow members in your area. In every issue of our Member Magazine, we include photos from some of these events. If you’ve never attended a chapter activity before, why not try something new?

This is an exciting time to be a member of Catholic Financial Life. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we read, “So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” As we experience the joys of the resurrection this Easter, may we become a new creation, as together we continue to help spread the Good News and good works of Christ in our local parishes and communities.

Fraternally,

William R. O’Toole President & CEO [email protected] 800-927-2547

Fraternalmente,

William R. O’Toole Presidente y Director Ejecutivo [email protected] 800-927-2547

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When I was in school, one of the must-have resources for good writing was Roget’s Thesaurus, filled with thousands of synonyms and antonyms to enhance a term paper or essay. During this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy a thesaurus might prove helpful in uncovering similar words that would describe what mercy really is. In Roget’s we find words like “benevolence, blessing, goodwill and sympathy.” Though for me the best synonym is “godsend.” In truth, mercy is sent from God, a gift from the Almighty that inspires us to fully live the human experience in a divine way.

Pope Francis has proclaimed this Jubilee in order to focus our attention on what is important in sharing mercy, to be Christ’s hands and voice in a world that needs a healing touch and a caring word. Now is our time to make a concerted effort to help those to whom life has been less than kind.

This Jubilee is a yearlong pilgrimage that has already begun. Its pathway ends November 20 with the Feast of Christ the King. This year you can follow the example of Christ by practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy outlined by the Church. In this issue of Member Magazine you will discover ways to feed the hungry, visit the sick, shelter the homeless, and give drink to the thirsty. Along the way you can also bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, and counsel the doubtful.

Returning to the thesaurus, we find words that are truly the antithesis of “mercy.” Though the list is long, one word stands out – “selfishness.” To be Christ to the world we must show “mercy” by truly giving of ourselves, as Christ did, without reservation. As a member of Catholic Financial Life you strive to be the embodiment of mercy through your volunteer efforts inspired by the Gospel. Thanks to you this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy will create miracles, and the healing of a wounded world will spread.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee

Unfortunately, children don’t come with a user manual. As parents we do our best, but let’s face it – nobody is perfect. As a matter of fact, being a parent is arguably one of the hardest jobs. While no one said raising a child would be easy, protecting their financial future can be! Catholic Financial Life offers several life insurance options for children that will do just that – protect their financial future.

You may be asking yourself, “Why should I buy life insurance on my child or grandchild? He’s young, and I don’t even want to think about something happening to him.” And neither do we! Instead, let’s talk about what life insurance can do for your child’s future.

Build Cash ValueConstruir valor efectivoPermanent life insurance, such as whole life, builds tax-deferred cash value. Parents often choose Catholic Financial Life’s 20-Pay whole life insurance plan for their children as it offers coverage that lasts a lifetime, but you pay for 20 years and then you’re done. The cash value in this plan, can also be accessed for your child in the future for such things as college tuition or the down payment on a home.*

Guarantee Future InsurabilityGarantice su asegurabilidad en el futuro No one knows if your child will develop a disability or chronic illness later in life, making it hard if not impossible to get

life insurance when it’s needed most. Purchasing Catholic Financial Life’s Term Life Insurance for Children (TLC Plan) ensures your child’s ability to get coverage later in life. This is a guaranteed right, regardless of health, occupation, or anything else – even if your child cannot get insurance from other companies.

Regardless if your child shows no apparent evidence of the illness during adulthood, the fact that some types of diseases run in the family (such as heart disease or diabetes) may increase the cost of life insurance later in life.

Lock-in an Affordable RateAsegurece un precio asequibleRaising a child can be expensive, and many parents think the same about life insurance. However, Catholic Financial Life offers affordable coverage at a price that meets your budget. Payments will likely be lower for a child compared to similar insurance purchased as an adult. At the end of the day, buying life insurance when the child is younger can cut costs significantly.

At Catholic Financial Life we know the security of your family is your primary concern – that’s because it’s ours too. Whether you’re a new parent or a grandparent, Catholic Financial Life has a range of affordable protection options to provide you with peace of mind, no matter what the future holds.

8  Catholic Financial Life Spring 2016

Many people don’t understand the importance of life insurance. They don’t know what it really is, why they need it, or how to go about getting it. With all this confusion about life insurance, several myths exist. Here are the true explanations behind these falsehoods.

1. Life insurance is too expensive. El seguro de vida es demasiado caro.

Getting coverage is cheaper than you think. In fact, a 2015 study found that millennials overestimate the cost of life insurance by 213 percent. In reality, a healthy 30-year-old can obtain $250,000 worth of 20-year term insurance coverage for less than $20 per month.

2. The coverage I receive through my employer is enough.

Many employers offer life insurance coverage, but it is usually far less than what you would need to maintain your

family’s lifestyle in the event of an unexpected death. In addition, when you leave a job, your coverage ends, leaving your family unprotected.

3. Only the family breadwinner needs life insurance.

The cost of replacing the services formerly provided by a homemaker can be higher than you think. How would you pay for childcare, cooking, cleaning, and transporting your children to and from school? Oftentimes the financial value of the work of a stay-at-home parent is equal to, or more than, that of a working parent. Insurance on the stay-at-home spouse also gives the working parent the opportunity to take time off work and help the family adjust to the loss.

4. My health disqualifies me. Mi salud me descalifica.

Many people assume that because their blood pressure is high, they smoke, or they’re 15 pounds overweight, a life insurance policy would be too expensive. This is not the case. It’s possible your rates may be a little higher with these conditions, but that cost would be nothing compared to the amount you risk not having a life insurance policy. By no means do you need to be in perfect health to purchase affordable life insurance.

Myth vs. Reality of Life InsuranceMito vs. realidad sobre seguros de vida

Finances are a taboo subject. We don’t ask our friends or family about their salaries, taxes, loans, insurance, and we certainly don’t mention our own. This mentality is understandable – people are afraid they will say something embarrassing – but it is also the reason so many people are misinformed about finances.

5. Everyone should buy term insurance and invest the rest.

That’s not true! It’s important to know the true differences between term and permanent life insurance. For example, a term policy can become very expensive as time goes on. If you know you will need a life insurance policy to cover funeral and burial expenses when you pass away, consider permanent coverage. Also for these reasons, those who provide for a special needs child, wish to cover estate taxes or leave money to family tax-free should not rely only on term insurance.

6. I’m young and have no dependents. Soy joven y no tengo dependientes.

This is a common myth about life insurance, but in reality, the younger you are, the better the timing is to buy life insurance. Because you are young and most likely healthy, your payments will be very low compared to buying at an older age. By buying an insurance plan now, you could lock in these low premiums for life.

7. Getting coverage is complicated. Cómo obtener cobertura es complicado.

Life insurance may seem confusing; there are several different types, companies, rates, policies, and more. Having a trusted financial partner makes all the difference.

Here at Catholic Financial Life, our advisors will guide you through a customized process, explaining each step along the way.

8. I have other financial obligations that are more important right now.

Now is the best time to purchase life insurance, because the reality is you never know when you will need it. Would you drive a car without airbags or live in a house without a smoke detector? Purchasing life insurance is a responsible and proactive measure to lessen your family’s financial burden in the case of a tragedy.

Life insurance should be a key part of your family’s financial plan. If reading these common misconceptions about life insurance has raised questions for you about your life insurance policy, or lack thereof, it’s time to get in touch with an advisor. Or pass this article along to your children to help secure their family and financial future.

Year of Mercy and Holy Doors

12  Catholic Financial Life Spring 2016

Making the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy Truly Extraordinary

In proclaiming the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that continues until November 20, Pope Francis encourages

us to become pilgrims on a journey of spiritual discovery. Along the way we, as Catholics, follow a pathway leading to a closer relationship with our Creator and the very meaning of our existence. As we travel on our pilgrimage through the year we are encouraged to seek the renewing power found in the

sacraments, and to share the best of our humanity with others through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

The mission, vision, and values of Catholic Financial Life blend perfectly with the Jubilee Year’s goals. This is evidenced by our national partnership and combined efforts with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Through our chapters, hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised and volunteer hours generated each year by our dedicated members to help those less fortunate. To coincide with the Jubilee of Mercy, we are seeking to encourage 100 percent of our Society’s chapters to

help the needy through expanded fund-raising efforts and volunteer projects. Encouraging your family to participate in such a chapter-sponsored activity near you would be an excellent opportunity to share in one of the corporal works of mercy first-hand.

Experience the Spiritual Renewal of Holy Doors As described by Archbishop Listecki in this issue, the Jubilee is also a time for personal spiritual development. One way to attain this is to visit churches throughout various dioceses across the country and, if possible, around the world, which have a specially

Jubilee of Mercy Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the Heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Let the Church be your visible face in the world. Send your spirit so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to the captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

designated Holy Door. The tradition of Holy Doors is age-old and refers to an entrance portal located within the Papal major basilicas in Rome. During jubilee years such as the current Jubilee of Mercy, these doors are ceremoniously blessed and opened. Though all cathedrals may have a designated Holy Door, a local bishop may also designate additional shrines and churches in his diocese to have such doors. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has ten locations including the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist.

Around the world there are only eight locations with Holy Doors specifically designated by the Holy See. In addition to St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, there are three more in Rome as well as one in Spain,

France, and the Philippines. The only site designated in the Western Hemisphere is the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre Dame de Québec in Quebec City, Canada.

Pope Francis has stated, “a Door of Mercy through which anyone enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.” To receive the full blessings of the Jubilee year, when visiting a Holy Door pilgrimage site, it is necessary to receive the sacrament of reconciliation, share in the Holy Eucharist, and pray for the Pope’s intentions. The Jubilee Year is also a wonderful opportunity to pray the Holy Rosary, adore the Blessed Sacrament, attend Mass regularly, and practice any of the Corporal Works of Mercy, listed on this page.

SERVING GOD BY SERVING OTHERS

Members of Chapter N093, Fitchburg, Mass., held the 18th Annual Yard Sale in September for a mission in Haiti. They raised $2,600 to benefit the Nutrition Center for children with severe malnutrition, and for the medical clinic.

18  Catholic Financial Life Spring 2016

It’s not the awards of Leading Total Producer, Leading Life Producer, New Member Growth Leader, Top 100 Lives Producer and Rookie of the Year that keep a Catholic Financial Life Advisor going to work every day. It’s not so much about being the best at something, rather, more about doing your best at something.

Matthew Tomlinson, 2015 Leading Life Producer

“When you do your best, you do what’s in the best interest of your clients, it’s that simple,” says Matthew Tomlinson,

Leading Life Producer. If it were just about winning awards I wouldn’t do it.” Matthew has been with Catholic Financial Life since April 2009. As a devoted Catholic Matthew shared that for him, being an advisor is not about becoming the top producer. It’s about working hard at a career that he enjoys and for a Catholic organization he truly believes in.

There is great satisfaction for Matthew in serving his clients. He gets immediate gratification from being able to take care of someone and offer them a product that he knows with 100%

certainty will protect them or ensure they have a steady stream of income in retirement. “I highly respect my clients and I’m honest. If that means I’m Leading Life Producer, that’s awesome, but that isn’t my goal,” shares Matthew.

John Augustine, 2015 Leading Total Producer

“During an initial meeting with a potential new member, I usually spend two to three hours talking about their life as well as their wants, hopes,

and dreams. It’s not very often that I spend that amount of time in one sitting with my own family. It is an honor to have someone share that much time with me,” says John Augustine, Leading Total Producer.

John has been with Catholic Financial Life since January 1976 – an unbelievable 40 years! While he has won this award many times over his career, you would never know it – he is as humble as they come. Recently John’s daughter, Suzi, decided to join her father as a Catholic Financial Life advisor. John is excited but also apprehensive because he fully understands the time and commitment it takes a new advisor to be successful. “You get out what you put in,” says John. Suzi is extremely lucky because she will have a seasoned veteran at her side encouraging her along the way!

Francisco Hernandez, 2015 New Member Growth Leader

When asked what motivates Francisco Hernandez, New Member Growth Leader, he stated simply, “I always wanted to help people, but I

couldn’t, I didn’t have the time because I had to work. Now, I get to help people as my work.”

Francisco is one of those unique individuals who radiates his passion for helping others. He believes he has earned this recognition because of his genuine fondness for his work.

As a native Spanish speaker, Francisco primarily serves the Hispanic community in Northern Illinois. He says he owes his success to his clients. “It’s a chain reaction, I help one family and they in turn tell another family,” states Francisco. “I’m very grateful to those I work with. Maybe that appreciation is contagious and we do good things together and are better for having met.”

Edgar Martinez, 2015 Rookie of the Year

Edgar Martinez, Rookie of the Year says, “To be invited into a family’s home and be trusted and treated with respect is a

humbling experience, yet extremely gratifying.”

It’s not about being the best, it’s about doing your best!Sales…it’s an Attitude of Gratitude

Outside of their social demeanor, love of conversation and busy schedules, what you notice when you talk to any of these leading advisors is their genuine passion for their work and immense gratitude for the members they serve. They treat members with the highest regard, and they respect and trust the protection that Catholic Financial Life can offer.

Edgar is active at his home parish, St. Thomas Aquinas in Madison, Wis. Conversation comes easy for him because he can talk about God and his faith with his friends from church. Being an advisor doesn’t feel like a job for him. “The core reason I work as an advisor is because I am able to help my community not only in the financial arena, but in their faith life too,” he shares. “It’s very special.”

Edgar feels he is like a teacher, educating his community about Catholic Financial Life. He attributes his success during his first year to his clients’ eagerness to understand the importance and value of life insurance.

Karen Stiles, 2015 Top 100 Lives Producer

Karen Stiles, Top 100 Lives Producer, believes that being part of someone’s life during the good and bad times, asking the difficult questions

and discovering what is most important led her to this career. “It is extremely gratifying to help make a difference in another person’s life,” says Karen.

A person who is full of energy and truly cares about her clients, Karen has been an advisor with Catholic Financial life for more than 26 years and during her tenure has earned the 100 Lives Award every year since the award’s inception in 2003! She was also the first recipient of the Michael Stivoric Fraternal Life Award in 2007, an award that recognizes an advisor who lives the fraternal mission of our Society.

When asked how she feels about these awards Karen says, “I’m just taking care of my members, friends and community.”

Catholicism is alive and well with today’s youthIn November, a gathering of more than 25,000 high school students and adult chaperones attended the 2015 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), an event that can be described as a “Catholic pep rally.” Attendees from across the country traveled to the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. for this powerful, biennial, three-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment.

The program included keynote presentations, prayer, workshops, Mass, and opportunities to participate in reconciliation and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as recreational activities, concerts, and exhibits. “The enthusiasm and energy was evident throughout the entire experience,” said Jim Love, Membership Specialist, Catholic Financial Life. “NCYC reignites your spirit!”

In an effort to further engage young adults, Catholic Financial Life offered NCYC Scholarships to eligible members. Catholic Financial Life was honored to award six students with scholarships to attend this event. We’re proud to support this important ministry and look forward to NCYC 2017!

Looking to host a Young Adult Networking Event?Catholic Financial Life hosted its first Young Adult Networking/Happy Hour in December at the New Berlin Ale House in New Berlin, Wis. This event is part of an initiative designed to bring young adult members together and collaborate on ways to better engage young adult members. It included discussion regarding an upcoming Young Adult Retreat and this summer’s mission trip to the Dominion Republic.

The New Berlin event was a great start, and we look forward to hosting several more sessions in 2016. If you are interested in helping organize a happy hour, community service project, retreat or networking event in your local area, contact Jim Love at 414-278-6597 or [email protected].

Supporting Catholic EducationCatholic Financial Life again was the premier sponsor of the Milwaukee Archdiocese’s third annual

Soles for Catholic Education Walk in October. More than 9,500 participants from nearly all of the 111 Catholic schools in the archdiocese came out to Mount Mary University in

Milwaukee, Wis. for the two-mile walk, live music, games and activities. The event raised a total of $340,596, with funds going to ensure that Catholic education

remains affordable and accessible. The day was a true success!

The Soles for Catholic Education Walk is important to Catholic Financial Life because we are passionate about Catholic education. Giving back to parishes, schools and communities is at the forefront of our mission to help others.

Catholic schools provide children with a faith-based education and the opportunity to learn and grow in their relationships with God every day. That’s why we want to help make Catholic education more affordable for our members. We offer scholarships for members enrolled in Catholic grade

school or high school, and any college. Awards range from $200 to $1,000.

Deadline fast approaching! All scholarship applications due March 31.

Also our Orphans’ College Scholarship, another benefit we are proud to offer our members, was recognized as one of the Top 50 College Scholarships for 2015-2016 by College Choice. The team at College Choice filtered through hundreds of college scholarships, fellowships, and grants at different grade levels and demographic niches and made a list of the top 50 awards in terms of their value. The Orphans’ College Scholarship, available to financial members or children whose natural or adoptive parent was a member when they passed away, offers full-time students up to $4,000 per year.
