Stewardship: Parishioner’s Answering God’s Call in Service An anonymous person, presumably a parishioner, recently donated several new and completed blankets, shawls and baby items for distribution through the Caring Needles Ministry. The donations were greatly appreciated and will help families in need.

• • • 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time • • • July 16 & 17, 2016
Reflection The month started out with the beginning of Luke’s tenth chapter, when Christ appoints and sends 72 disciples out to do
his work. He warns them the road will not always be easy and that they will not always be accepted. But they were asked
to drop everything and go bring peace to households. With this we, too, are reminded that our baptism calls us to do the
same and minister to those that we meet, knowing that the journey will not always be easy. Last week Luke’s gospel gave
us the greatest commandment – that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, being, strength and mind and that
we are to love our neighbor with mercy and compassion… even those that are different than us: the foundation of our call
in how to treat others. Today the story brings us face to face with the message of hospitality, of the primacy of human
relationships in the busy-ness of life and of the refusal to allow culture or external kinds of things to decide for you who
you are going to be and what you will stand for as a person. Next week Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray to the
Father, giving us the prayer that we still recite to this day. So, as you can see, during these weeks of July we are given the
basic tools of discipleship-we are called forth, we are given the foundational commandments and we are taught how to
pray to our God. Chapter 10 of Luke’s gospel calls us again to a Stewardship way of life; Prayer, Formation, Hospitality, and
Service.

Parish Events Back to School Health Fair
Are you looking for a family-friendly service outreach this summer or do you just love to shop for
school supplies? Perhaps you have some free time on July 30? The POP Outreach Ministry is looking
for volunteers and donations for POP’s Annual “Back to School Health Fair” on Saturday, July 30, at
POP. With your help, we will be able to provide many needy children in our area with school supplies
so that they can be prepared for the school year. Place donations in the marked bin in the Gathering
Space - cash or check donations to the church office, please. This means so much to the children and
families in our community. Local health care providers, vendors, and other organizations will be at the health fair, too, offering
free health screenings and other services. To volunteer at the morning event contact Kathy Claypoole,
[email protected]. Items needed: 24 count crayons, rulers, glue sticks, notebooks, pens, pencils,
colored markers, colored pencils, scissors for young children, loose leaf paper, and folders.

Financial Stewardship
Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality
required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire - a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint.
Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?
Financial Stewardship for July 2 & 3 and July 9 & 10:

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24)
“Seamless Garment”
Poem by Daniel Berrigan - The beauty of the “seamless garment” image!
Posted on June 22, 2016 by Rachel MacNair
No one, not one exposed to the rude winds of the world, No one, however torn or lost, out in the cold.
No one rejected, no one unwanted! The unborn, the aged, ill, condemned,
The expendable, “lives of no worth” - No matter the tag, everyone matters!
If these are expendable, who is precious? No one is expendable!
Everyone wrapped in a vast enfolding embrace, A garment designed by God bequeathed to us
We wear it proudly, tend it, repair it, cherish it, design it anew,
Yes, lend it, offer it everywhere! A baptismal robe for the twice-born,
The woof and warp of our humanity!
