St. Simon the Apostle Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2020 Sunday Readings for September 20, 2020 R 1 Is 55:6–9 Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Let the scoundrel forsake his way, and the wicked his thoughts; let him turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts. RESPONSORIAL PSALM 5PM PS145: I will praise your name, my King and my God. I will praise your name, my King and my God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM 7AM, 9AM, 11AM PS 145: The Lord is near to all who call up-on him. R 2 Phil 1:20c–24, 27a Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. G Mt 20:1–16a Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my

own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. P F I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only begotten Son of God, born of the Father, before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including “and became man,” all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hurricane and Wild Fire Disaster Special Collection

Archbishop Rozanski has asked parishes to participate in a second collection to help provide immediate and long-term aid to those recovering from Hurricane Laura in Louisiana and the Wild Fires in California at all Masses. Our collection at St. Simon will be the weekend of September 26/27th. The funds collected in this special appeal will become part of the Bishops Emergency Disaster Fund and will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services. The funds will be distributed where they are most needed immediately. If parishioners are writing checks, they may make them payable to the parish with Hurricane/Wild Fire in the memo.

Message from Fr. Brad

St. Simon the Apostle Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2020

Join Us: Life Chain Sunday Sunday Oct. 4th 2:00 – 3:00 pm Saint Catherine Laboure Parish

Meet on SCL’s parking lot off Lindbergh. For all ages, the whole family. We pray silently, and provide signs. Please stand on only one side of Lindbergh, the side along SCL’s campus. And please stand 30 feet apart and pray the rosary or other silent prayers. Last year we had good attendance. Let’s do it again, witnessing the Gospel of Life to South County! Sponsored by Life Ministry and Knights of Columbus. 314 842 7950

Dear Parishioners, Please help me welcome Joe Dulatt to our parish staff as our new Director of Operations and Finances. Joe previously worked for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and is a parishioner of Queen of All Saints parish. I am looking forward to Joe bringing his experience and knowledge of the inner workings of the Archdiocese to our community. He can be reached at [email protected] and 314-842-3848, ext. 102. I wanted to make you aware of two special collections that we have been asked to take up, and ask that you join me in supporting these efforts. The first is a special collection for the victims of the hurricanes that have ravished the Gulf Coast region, as well as the victims of the wildfires that have destroyed whole communities out West. You can make your donation online, through our parish online-giving website, www.osvhub.com/st-simon-the-apostle-church/funds; scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click on “Hurricane & Wildfire Victims”. If you drop your donation in the offertory basket at Mass, please make some notation that it is for the “Hurricane & Wildfire Victims.” The other special collection is for the support of the permanent diaconate formation program. This is an annual collection through the Archdiocese of St. Louis, supporting the men studying to become permanent deacons. Our parish has certainly benefited from this program, as Deacon Dave and Deacon Paul have served our community in so many ways. Please join me in supporting the next generation of deacons who will minister in our local church. This collection is scheduled for the first weekend in October; you can make your donation online, or you can place your donation in the offertory basket at Mass, with the notation “Permanent Diaconate.” Looking ahead, I wanted remind you of our annual Parish Day of Service, scheduled for Saturday, October 17th. Please join me for a couple of hours on that day, as we take care of some outdoor projects around the parish, do some deep cleaning within our church space, and reach out to the community at-large. Although the pandemic will limit our efforts somewhat, we can still come together as a parish community in service and brotherly love, allowing God to work through our hands and hearts. Watch for details concerning the specific efforts we hope to complete on that day, and join us if you can! Finally, during these weeks and months leading up to Election Day on Tuesday, November 3rd, I wanted to offer some encouragement and support for all of us, to make every effort to participate in our country’s demo-cratic process. Please make every effort to vote. I will never tell a person how to vote - my mother would get upset with me if I did that! However, I want to encourage all of us who have the privilege to vote to make the effort, so that our voices can be heard. A great way to prepare ourselves is to read the document from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops entitled Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. This document is available on their website, www.usccb.org. Let us take to heart the encouragement from Pope Francis: “We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interest-ed in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of them-selves so that the leader can govern.” May you have a healthy and holy week! Continue to stay safe during this pandemic! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely, Fr. Brad
