Growing through the Sunday Scriptures

Isaiah 55:10-11 Psalm 65

Romans 8:1823 Matthew 13:1-23

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them. “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, be-cause they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. “Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

The invitation of Jesus to find rest in him brings to mind that inspiriting inscription on the statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” We pray today for our country as

we recall our founders’ dreams of creating a haven for the oppressed. And let us ask for mercy when we have failed to realize this noble dream. JULY 4 AND OBSERVANCES - In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13 gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting. In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France. In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5. In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration. In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebra-tion of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy". In 1791 the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day" occurred. In 1820 the first Fourth of July celebration was held in Eastport, Maine which remains the largest in the state. In 1870, the Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday. OUR PARISH GOLF OUTING is Monday, July 25, at the Smithtown Landing Golf Course. Cost per golfer is $150 which includes a catered meal back at St. Thomas More in Walden Hall. Save the date. Please return the reservation form you received in the mail or use the one that is in the bulletin and return it as soon as you can. There is a Raffle as part of the Golf Outing. If you cannot make the Outing you can still buy a raffle ticket or two. They are offered after Masses until the Golf Outing. They are $10 each or three for $20. First prize will be a 3D TV with cables and Blue Ray. Second prize will be two tickets to the “Jersey Boys” on August 17 with limo service to and from the show. Third prize will be three tickets to a Giants football game (if the football season happens). Tickets are on the 50 yard line, seven rows back. Fourth prize will be a Kindle Reader. SUMMER BLOOD DRIVE—We will have a Summer Blood Drive here at the parish on Tuesday, July 26, in Walden Hall, beginning at 3pm. Miss Eve Barnofsky who coordinated the Blood Drive in December will do the same for this Blood Drive. Keep the date open. MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE COLLECTION—Fr. Hugh Burns thanks the parish for their support of the Dominican Foreign Missions collection last weekend.

JUSTICE & PEACE Today we start our Summer series. Our topic is Doing Things for One Another. Some people have plenty of money. Let them feed the poor, clothe the naked, build a church, and use their money for whatever good purposes they can. Other people have the gift of counsel. Let them guide their neighbors, dispersing the darkness of doubt with the light of loving faith. Still others have the ability to teach. Let them make distribution from the storerooms of the Lord, handing out food to their fellow servants, confirming the faithful, calling back those who stray, seeking the lost, as best they can. What does this all mean in terms of justice and peace? May we bear one another's burdens and accomplish the law of Christ. We are our brother's keeper.

Justice is a parish affair. Discover needs and act justly.

Together we can make a difference. July 4th is Independence Day. It is also St. Elizabeth of Portugal. July 5th is St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria. July 6th is St. Maria Goretti. July 9th is St. Augustine Zhao Rong and his Companions.
