Twice today we hear the words “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Even though we just heard these words a month ago at Christmas, it is appro-priate to hear them again. Jesus began his mission by fulfilling the words of the great prophet Isaiah. Today we contemplate the mission we are called to and pray that we can fulfill the plan God has for us.

Throughout his Gos-pel, Ma hew re-minds his audience that Jesus is the one who fulfills all the prophe- cies from the Old Testament regarding the one who was to come. Already he has laid out Jesus’ genealogy to show that he is of the house of David. Also, he was born of a virgin, born in the town of Bethlehem, later to come out of Egypt and grow up in Nazareth. Now he reminds them that a er his bap sm he went to Galilee, to the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, just as Isaiah had prophesied. It is no coincidence that the first reading near-ly every Sunday since the first of December has been from the prophet Isaiah. Unlike Luke, Ma hew does not precede the

story of the calling of the first apostles, fishermen all, by rela ng the story of a miraculous catch of fish. Perhaps this is because he trusts that Simon, Andrew, James, and John, like his Jew-ish audience, would already recognize in Jesus the fulfill-ment of the ancient prophe-cies. No wonder they are able to abandon their steady jobs “at once” for a completely new calling.

Only a er they are called does Jesus embark on his mission, teaching, preaching, and healing.

But Isaiah clued them in to what Jesus would do, this Light in a land overshadowed by death, glorifying the road between Jew-ish and Gen le lands, proclaiming Good News of abundant joy, and destroying the burdens of disease and illness.

Just a er we completed the week of prayer for Chris an unity, we hear this reading from Paul decrying the divisions within the church in Corinth. As disciples ourselves, we have a responsibil-ity to work for unity, for in Christ there can be no division. Christ transcends all human leaders who could claim adherents while excluding others.

CARRY THE LOAD- The chief thing

is to take the burden on one’s shoulders.

Dos veces oímos hoy estas palabras: “El pueblo que camina-ba en nieblas vio una gran luz”. Aunque escuchamos estas mis-mas palabras hace apenas un mes durante la Navidad, oírlas de nuevo es apropiado. Jesús comenzó su misión al cumplir las palabras del profeta Isaías. Hoy contemplamos la misión que se nos ha encomendado y oramos para que podamos cumplir el plan que Dios ene para no-sotros. A lo largo de todo su Evangelio Mateo le recuerda a su audiencia que Jesús es quien ha cumplido todas las profecías del An guo Testamento sobre el que habría

de venir. Ya él ha expuesto la genealogía de Jesús a fin de mostrar que es del linaje de David. Además nació de una virgen en la ciudad de Belén y después salió de Egipto para crecer en Nazaret. Ahora Mateo le recuerda a su audiencia que Jesús fue a Galilea, a la región de Zabulón y Ne alí, después de haber sido bau zado, tal como lo había profe zado Isaías. No es coin-cidencia que la primera lectura en casi todos los domingos desde los primeros de diciembre ha sido tomada del libro del profeta Isaías. A diferencia de Lucas, Mateo no precede la his-

toria del llamado de los apóstoles (todos ellos pescado-res) al relato de la pesca milag-rosa. Tal vez sea porque con a en que Simón, Andrés, San ago y Juan (al igual que su audi-encia judía) ya reconocían en Jesús el cumplimiento de las an guas profecías. Con razón pudieron dejar sus trabajos regulares “inmediatamente” para dedicarse a una misión completamente nueva. Sólo después que ellos fueron llamados es que Jesús em-prende su misión de enseñar, predicar y curar. Pero Isaías les da un indicio de lo que haría

Jesús, pues esa Luz alum-bra en una erra de som-bras de muerte y glorifica el camino entre la erra de los judíos y la de los paganos, proclama la buena nueva de la alegría abundante, y destruye el

yugo de padecimientos y enfermedades.

Justo después de terminarse la semana de oración por la uni-dad de los cris anos escuchamos esta lectura de Pablo denun-ciando las divisiones en la Iglesia de Corin o. Como discípulos que somos también nosotros temenos la responsabilidad de trabajar en favor de la unidad, pues en Cristo no pueden haber divisiones. Cristo trasciende a todos los líderes humanos que se adjudican a sí mismos ser adeptos mientras que a la vez ex-cluyen a otras personas.

On the Feast of St. Jerome this past fall, Pope Francis dedicated the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time as Word of God Sunday. The first cele-bra on of this annual day will be on January 26, 2020. In his decree, “Aperuit Illis,” the Holy Father said, “The rela onship between the Risen Lord, the community of believers and sacred Scripture is essen al to our iden ty as Chris ans…The Bible is the book of the Lord’s people, who, in listening to it, move from dispersion and division towards unity.” Pope Francis suggested that on ‘Word of God’ Sunday, the sacred text be enthroned “in order to focus the a en on of the assembly on the norma-

ve value of God’s Word.” Pastors are invited to preach on the importance of the Word and to encourage the faithful to read the Bible as a regular part

of their daily lives. Liturgists and pastoral musicians would do well to plan music that will support this emphasis.

El Papa Francisco ins tuyó el “Domingo de la Palabra de Dios” que la Iglesia Universal celebrará cada tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario para hacer “crecer en el pueblo de Dios la familiaridad religiosa y asidua con la Sagrada Escritura”. Así lo indicó el Santo Padre con la Carta Apostólica en forma de “Motu Proprio” tulada “Aperuit Illis” publi-cada este lunes 30 de sep embre, memoria litúrgica de San Jerónimo. El tulo de esta Carta Apostólica se basa en el pasaje bíblico de San Lucas del capítulo 24 en el que se describe el gesto de Jesucristo a los discípulos con el cual “les abrió el entendimiento para comprender las Escrituras”. El Papa Francisco señala que el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios “se colocará en un mo-mento oportuno de ese periodo del año, en el que estamos invitados a fortalecer los lazos con los judíos y a rezar por la unidad de los cris anos” y añade que “no se trata de una mera coincidencia temporal: celebrar el Domingo de la Palabra de Dios expresa un valor ecuménico, porque la Sagrada Escritura indica a los que se ponen en ac tud de escucha el camino a seguir para llegar a una autén ca y sólida unidad”. Además, el Pon fice sugiere que en este Domingo los obispos “podrán celebrar el rito del Lectorado o confiar un ministerio similar para recordar la importancia de la procla-mación de la Palabra de Dios en la liturgia” y que los párrocos “podrán encontrar el modo de entregar la Biblia, o uno de sus libros, a toda la asamblea, para resaltar la im-portancia de seguir en la vida diaria la lectura, la profundización y la oración con la Sa-grada Escritura, con una par cular consideración a la lec o divina”.
