As bishop, John built churches and schools, instituted a religious
education program for children, and prepared English and German
catechisms that remained in use long after he died. He also continued to
travel throughout the diocese, which at that time included Delaware,
eastern Pennsylvania, and parts of New Jersey, visiting each parish and
mission every two years. Not everyone appreciated this. He was
criticized for not having ceremonial manners and for appearing in public
in old patched clothes instead of the rich garb a bishop was expected to
wear.
However, the people of his diocese loved him for his willingness to reach
out to them. When he died suddenly at the age of 48, they lined the
streets of Baltimore by the thousands to say good-bye to him.
His body is buried at St. Peter, the Redemptorist church in Baltimore.
The Roman Catholic Church remembers Bishop Neumann each year on
January 5th.
From the “Hooray and Halleluia” Department…. A week before Christmas Lisa Schrock asked me if I would like to attend
the Dance Center of Kirkwood‟s presentation of The Nutcracker Ballet.
It was held at the Kirkwood Community Center at the park and, I must
say, it was very well done and a real credit goes to Kathleen Massot,
parishioner, who choreographed the entire presentation and Nancy
Massot, a parishioner, who handled costumes. Many of our girls from
St. Peter were in the ballet that day and they all did a fantastic job. What
I saw that day was the culmination of many hours of work and
preparation and it showed. It was a great Sunday before Christmas
“mood catcher” to get my mind and heart on Christmas. Well done,
girls, you represented St. Peter Parish very well indeed! The St. Peter
girls were:
Elizabeth Modde, Nikki Clodfelter, Becca Clodfelter, Katie Schrock,
Claire Henleben, Maggie McWay, Helen Morse, and Adrian Morse. I
think and I hope I remembered all the girls from St. Peter. If not I
apologize now.
Also that same day one of our fifth graders, Griffin Lester, held his
seventh annual Hot Chocolate Stand on E. Bodley Lane to raise some
money for Our Lady‟s Inn, an emergency maternity shelter. Griffin is
the son of Bill and Sally Lester of Kirkwood. Griffin raised over
$1500.00 for the charity that day. He also collected that same day paper
products that Our Lady‟s Inn could use too.
Totally his idea Griffin saw a need seven years ago and decided that this
was a good way to help. Wow! That means that Griffin was a
Kindergarten/pre-school young person when he first opened his Hot
Chocolate Stand. Way to go, Griffin! You sure know what Christian
service is all about. I am sure glad you go to St. Peter School.
From the “You Did Good” Department… Did you notice how great our church looked for Christmas this year? If
you see Susan Mauer, Rose Ross, and their all volunteer crew thank them
for a job well done. They spent several days turning our church into a fit
place for our liturgical celebrations of the Lord‟s Incarnation. Creating a
proper environment for prayer is huge and put us in a festive mood
throughout the Christmas season. Thanks one and all.
And the same holds true for Carol Bauer, Mike Bauer, and the choirs and
music ministers that helped us celebrate Christmas in song and praise.
Many hours of rehearsal go into each celebration. Thanks so much for
lifting our spirits with your music at every Mass and for all your time
given to serve us so well. For both art and environment and for music it
was a true labor of love and we are grateful.
Enough with the cold and the snow and ice! When is Groundhogs
Day again? Now let’s see it is January 16th…good that means
January is half over! Yea! Open up that Hot Chocolate Stand again,
Griffin! And I’ll see you in church.
Monsignor Jack

The Gospel of Matthew….Cycle A…Year 2011 The first gospel starts with “a genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David,
son of Abraham.” With this opening the evangelist prepares us for this
Jesus who will be the fulfillment of major figures of the Hebrew
Scriptures.
Archeologists and textual experts usually date the writing of the Gospel
of Matthew to around 80 AD. One piece of evidence for this dating of
this gospel is that it contains nearly all of the Gospel of Mark. From
this we know that it was composed after 70 AD (near the time when
Mark was written). In addition to have Mark as a source, the Gospel of
Matthew shares a large chunk of material with Luke, material that
appears neither in Mark or in John. From this we assume that there was
another source for Matthew, one that he and the writer of Luke used.
Matthew also had his own information about Jesus that the other
evangelists did not.
The Gospel of Matthew is unique in its five-part structure: after the
introduction (which contains the stories of the annunciation to Joseph
{not Mary, as in Luke} of Jesus‟ birth, his birth and manifestations to
the magi {not shepherds, as in Luke}, each part contains a long speech
by Jesus followed by actions that Jesus performs. Part one is the
Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5-7); part two prepares the disciples
for their missionary journeys 10); part three is filled with parables (13);
part four deals with church order (18); and the fifth part concerns the
end of the world (24 – 25). Scholars assume that the evangelist adopted
this structure from the Pentateuch, the first fives books of the Bible.
This is a big clue about the portrait of Jesus in this gospel.
Many of the people in the church for which the Gospel of Matthew was
written were Jews. One of the main purposes of this gospel was to
provide consolation to those who wrestled with the compatibility of the
Jewish heritage and their faith in Jesus. For this reason we find
references to patriarchs of ancient Israel from the very first verse. A
genealogy filled with Jewish ancestors begins the text, and the
evangelist fills the narrative with quotations from the Hebrew
scriptures. All of this seeks to reassure the hearers that Jesus of
Nazareth was indeed the Messiah anticipated in the older faith.
The Gospel of Matthew is proclaimed throughout 2011, Year A of the
three year liturgical cycle.
Saints of January . . . St. John Neumann He held a powerful post, bishop of Philadelphia, when the diocese
covered 35,000 square miles. Yet “the gentle bishop,” as John
Neumann (1811-1860) was called, was a shy and self-effacing man. He
wanted only to be a simple missionary priest bringing comfort to his
immigrant flock.
John was born in what is now the Czech Republic. As a young
seminarian he hoped to come to America, where there were very few
priests to assist a surge of immigrants. After several setbacks, he
boarded a ship on impulse and headed for New York. He had no
papers and was not even ordained yet.
Fortunately, the local bishop welcomed him. He was first assigned to
the mission parishes in the Buffalo area of Western New York. Though
few of his immigrant parishioners spoke his native language, Czech, he
had studied German, English, and French as a school boy. Eventually
he learned Gaelic, Spanish, and Italian. This made it possible for
people to receive the sacrament of reconciliation in their own language.
Many of his parishioners hadn‟t had the opportunity to do this for many
years.
Since the parishes of this area were rural and spread apart, he traveled
constantly. As a safeguard against the isolation of this work he joined
the Redemptorists Order. Soon he was the head of all the Redemptorists
in the United States. Then the bishop of Philadelphia recommended
John as his successor. To John‟s chagrin, he was appointed.

TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every
nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to
him.’” ACTS 10:34-35
St. Peter reminds us that from the very beginnings of the Catholic
Church everyone was invited to participate. We cannot be an
“us” and “them” Church. By our common Baptism, we are all
united with Jesus in carrying out His work here on earth. God
shows no partiality but He does expect all to be active in living
and building up the faith.

The Giving Tree Ministry would like to thank
everyone who supported the 2010 Giving Tree.
Once again the parishioners of St. Peter showed
their overwhelming generosity by donating
nearly 1,300 gifts and $4,000.00 in gift cards. Kirkcare, New
Covenant Ministries and YWCA Headstart were very grateful for
all your donations.
Many thanks, also, to the many volunteers and school children
who helped by hanging ornaments, carrying and sorting the gifts.

FR. GARY'S PANTRY NEEDS HELP!
Tomorrow, Monday, January 17th is
St. Peter’s first delivery of food to
Sts. Teresa & Bridget’s Food Pantry for 2011.
After a blessed Christmas Season it is time to focus on feeding
the poor and hungry served by Sts. Teresa and & Bridget food
pantry. Home heating costs are higher, leaving less money for
food.
Unfortunately the temperatures have dropped and so have our
donations. Please donate what you can, we all enjoy a warm
meal, it's badly needed.
For those of you who are not aware of why and how this food
pantry collection got started please read below:
After visiting with Fr. Gary Meier, former associate at St. Peter,
now pastor of Sts. Teresa & Bridget (located on Grand & N.
Market, St. Louis City), he explained how his parish and
community are in great need. They have a food pantry that
serves their area, open one day a week for 3 hours. Even though
another county parish supplies canned goods once a month, the
high demand keeps their shelves bare. They have had to reduce
what they're able to give to those who come for help to a bag that
holds just enough food for 2 meals.
THIS IS WHERE WE COME IN. By collecting canned goods
MONTHLY we can help make other peoples' lives better and
respond to Jesus' call to feed Him when He is hungry.
Donations are delivered on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Please bring canned food in plastic bags about 4 days prior to
the monthly delivery date (3rd Monday each month) to our
home, placing it on the front porch. A list of items needed
and delivery dates is located in The Gathering Area in the
back of church.
DROP OFF LOCATION ~
Candy and John Behl, 319 East Adams, Kirkwood (block and a
half east of the YMCA). Please donate cans that are no larger
than 30 ounces, anything larger is difficult to carry for all of us.
Thank you for your support and generosity.

ST. PETERFEST 2011
It is hard to think of hot dogs and
carnival rides when it‟s 20 degrees
outside and the Christmas decorations
are barely put away but we want to get
you thinking about St. Peterfest.
St. Peterfest 2011 will be on Friday June
3rd and Saturday June 4th this year. St. Peterfest is a great
parish community picnic and a fundraiser that benefits the
parish as a whole. The money raised on this weekend goes
into a sort of emergency fund that has helped with unplanned
parish expenses in the past. Many organizations from the
church pitch in and staff different booths on this weekend.
The St. Peterfest co-chairs are Chris Kern at 984-9858 or email
[email protected] and Jennifer Jonagan at 909-8437 or
[email protected]. Please contact them if you have
any questions. They welcome any level of participation.
St. Peterfest meetings have begun and are the first Thursday of
the month at 7:00PM in Ursuline Hall if you are interested in
attending.
