Middle school is an important time as students are growing into young adults and preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation--we need loving, passionate teachers who can help them understand and appreciate their Catholic faith! Cathedral Music Ministry
The Cathedral Choir rehearsals will resume 9 September and the
choir will also begin singing the Solemn High Mass each week on Sunday morning at 11:15. They will be also performing on the Cathedral Music Series throughout the year and will include the annual Bishop’s Concert with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
If you have ever given thought to possibly joining the Cathedral Choir, now is the perfect time to do so! We currently have openings in each section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and would welcome any new members.
NEW!!!This past year we established the Cathedral Girl Choristers. The Choristers provided musical leadership for the 9:00am Sunday Mass. The Cathedral Girl Choristers will rehearse each Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm-4:00pm and will be singing at least twice a month. The choristers will learn about vocal production, music theory and history, sight-singing, and there will also be fun musical activities!! Catholic Customs for the HomeExaltation of the Holy Cross 14 September
The herb, basil has long been associated with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The word “basil” is related to basileios, from the Greek word for king.
According to the liturgical legend, the Empress Saint Helena found the location of the True Cross by digging for it under a colony of basil. Basil plants were reputed to have sprung up at the foot of the Cross where fell the Precious Blood of Christ and the tears of the Mother of Sorrows.
A sprig of basil was said to have been found growing from the wood of the True Cross. On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross it is customary in the East
to rest the Holy Cross on a bed of basil before presenting it to the veneration of the faithful.
Also, from the practice in some areas of strewing branches of basil before church communion rails, it came to be known as Holy Communion Plant. Blessed basil leaf can be arranged in a bouquet at the foot of the crucifix; the dried leaves can also be used by the faithful as a sacramental.
Bring your sprigs of basil to be blessed the weekend of 12 & 13 September. Please place it on the table provided by the side altar before Mass and it will be blessed. You can then pick it up after Mass to use in your home or in a special recipe for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 14 September!

Daughters Announce Media RetreatDaughters of Saint Paul, a congregation of women religious dedicated to living and communicating Christ through the media are offering a special retreat for those who work in the media. This is our first retreat for people working in the field of media communications/entertainment. The weekend retreat will be held from Friday, 9 October to Sunday, 11 October, at Saint Thecla’s Retreat House in Billerica, MA. Remembrance Mass for Early Child Loss The Diocese of Charleston is sponsoring a Remembrance Mass for Early Child Loss on Saturday, 17 October 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Charleston, SC. The Mass is open to all who have suffered from the death of a child for any reason such as miscarriage, stillbirth, illness, accident or abortion. Mothers, Fathers, siblings, grandparents, and friends who are seeking God’s healing comfort are encouraged to attend. There will be a speaker and reception to follow. Active Membership: Various facilities and services are available to our active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events, and includes parishioner status in parochial schools.
ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP is determined by four things:
1. Being properly registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time.2. Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.3. Use of the envelope system in regular support of the parish.4. Being active in at least one parishprogram, ministry, or organization.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Email: [email protected] the bride or the groom must be a practicing Catholic and registered at the Cathedral for at least twelve months before scheduling a wedding date and beginning the six months marriage preparation. The bride/groom must be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation, and use of the envelope system in regular support of the parish.
