The Gospel gives us Matthew’s “Passion nar-
rative,” which begins with the betrayal of
Judas and concludes with the laying of Je-
sus in the guarded tomb. Like each of the
four evangelist in their account of the Pas-
sion, Matthew preserves much of the oral
and written tradition passed on to him. This
has led scholars to speculate that the Pas-
sion narrative was part of the earliest keryg-
ma (or proclamation of Gospel teachings) by
the first generation of Christians, since it
appears to have solidified into a fixed writ-
ten form rather quickly. While Matthew pro-
vides some additional details (such as the
suicide of Judas, and the guard at Jesus’
tomb) none of these details change the basic
sequence of events as reported by all the
evangelists. As the other evangelists, Mat-
thew saw the agony of Jesus’ arrest, interro-
gation, and death as part of the fulfillment
of Old Testament prophesies; for example,
Judas’ thirty pieces of silver for betraying
Jesus and Peter’s denial of Jesus, both
prophesied by Zechariah.
Every Palm Sunday we hear proclaimed the
same reading from Paul’s Letter to the Phi-
lippians. Scholars believe this text predates
Paul himself and that it was likely a hymn
sung in the liturgies of the earliest Chris-
tians. We can learn an important lesson
about Jesus’ suffering and death from this
first generation of Christians: Because of Je-
sus’ “obedience to the point of death, even
death on a cross…., at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend...and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ if Lord”.

As more Catholics around the world find
themselves unable to receive the Eucharist due to the coronavirus pandemic, this past
week Pope Francis provided an example of a spiritual communion prayer that can be said
from home. We sug-
gest that your focus your attention on this or another pic-
ture of Jesus in the Most Holy Sacra-
ment and offer this prayer in union with so many others
around the world. You and your family
might also pray the Rosary.
“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive
You into my soul. Since I cannot at this mo-ment receive You sacramentally, come at
least spiritually into my heart ... I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You,” Prayed by Pope Francis in his televised daily
Mass from his residence in Vatican City

As Catholics, we are suddenly faced with
parish doors being locked and limited ac-cess to the sacraments. This can be very
disheartening. Now more than ever, we must hold fast to the great virtue of Hope. In the words of Pope St. John Paul II “Do
not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ.” We must open the doors of our hearts to Christ and trust in the Lord who
will give us everything we need.
