A WORD ABOUT THE WORDby Deacon Bob Fishman

Have you ever heard the term “thrown under the bus” or the phrase “blame game”? Maybe you have tried to share the gospel or the Faith with your family and no matter what you try to do it doesn’t work. If these things sound familiar then this week’s readings are for you. In our first reading we have the Genesis story of the fall of Adam and Eve. Due to the disobedience of both Adam and Eve, the world would never be the same and sin and death entered in. Adam had been told by God not to eat of the tree and we know the story…Or do we? Notice when Adam is confronted by God, he immediately throws Eve under the bus…so to speak…”The woman whom you put here with me…she gave me the fruit”…What a stand up guy…After Adam comes Eve…”the serpent tricked me into eating it”…She blames the serpent. Thus the blame game begins. Now this passage enters into what we call the “Proto-evangelium”- or the first gospel prophecy in scripture. God says to the serpent, I will put enmity between you and the woman… between her seed and yours… and He (the woman’s seed) will strike at your head”…This is a prophecy that the seed of a woman will crush the head of the serpent. It is a prophecy about Jesus! He would come to repair the wound caused by the disobedience of Adam and Eve, and here it is predicted in the opening pages of the Bible.In our Gospel the scribes wrongfully attribute Jesus’ power to that of Beelzebul – a pagan god meaning “prince of Baal” – They use it as “prince of demons”-a title for Satan. Little do they realize that our Lord will crush the prince of demons and redeem mankind. The passage goes on to mention Jesus’ brothers and sisters. This is a reference to his cousins and kinsmen, His relatives,’ not actual siblings. Yet even His kinsmen struggle to do the will of God. So it is with us. We want our loved ones to get to Heaven, but they won’t listen to us. What should we do? We need to pray and fast, and let them know we are praying for them. We need to fill our own cups up so we can give the thirsty world a drink and we need to be there for them when things go bad. Tell them the good news of Jesus. That He deemed for all time that they should be born right now and that He knew them in the womb and knows truly who they are and that He wants them with Him in Heaven and not to be lost. God became man to bring fallen man back to God. He loves them and died to give them and you life everlasting. What more can He do for us? This life passes but eternity is forever…Some tid bits to think about this week and may God richly bless you always…

Prayer for Ordinary TimeGod of Eternity,

As I walk the path of Ordinary Time, help me to count the many ways you are present- in the comings and goings of family, friends, coworkers and acquaintances; in the sounds of summer and the beauty of your magnificent creation;

in the daily routines and responsibilities that make up the rhythm of my days.

Make all time extra-ordinary as I seek to become more attuned to your presence.

Amen
