Aiding the Church in Africa: In a time when church campuses are being evaluated and stock taken

in terms of the patrimony of religious goods, we ask your assistance to aid the Church in Africa. Please consider donating to various Catholic parishes in Africa any vestments, chalices, ciboria,

Roman Missals, crucifix, candle stands etc. that you are no longer using on a regular basis. What is looked upon as “extra” for you, might serve as “the one and only” for a parish in Africa. They can be dropped off at the Cathedral, Chancery or Pastoral Center at any time, and if necessary

they can also be picked up. If you are coming to the Cathedral over the next few months, please bring these items with you. They will be placed in barrels and shipped (literally) to Africa where

they will be received with great joy and appreciation. Many thanks for your generosity. Email any questions to [email protected] or [email protected].

Social Justice Conference: Please join us for the 9th Annual Bishop Peter Rosazza Social Justice

Conference on Saturday, June 9th from 9 am-3:30 pm at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield! There will be 12 engaging workshops both in English and Spanish. A featured workshop this year is

“Addressing Racism: What We Have Seen and Heard.” Panelists Myles Hubbard and Dcn. Ramon Rosado from St. Justin-St. Michael Parish along with Regina Cram, a featured columnist in the Catholic Transcript, will share their experience with racism and how they are actively working to

foster race relations, providing insight on how that can be done in our Archdiocese! Please register online at catholicsocialjustice.org or call 860-242-5573 for more information. Registration is $40

for adults and $30 for students (ages 14-21). The deadline for registration is Friday, June 1st.

Parish Death: Please keep in your prayers the

repose of the soul of Elizabeth Jane Fay Smolen, the mother of Sara Holmes, who passed away

on Tuesday, May 1st. Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May she rest in peace. Amen.

Appeal Commitment Weekend Date Change: The Appeal Commitment Weekend has been

changed from May 26th & 27th to June 9th & 10th. All parishioners will have the chance to make a pledge to the 2018 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal during Masses at that time.

Thank you to all those who have already made their pledge or gift, and if haven’t please consider making a pledge. When you contribute to any charitable effort, you want to be assured that the funds received are being used wisely. This includes your gift to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal,

which supports the ministries and outreach of the Archdiocese of Hartford and its parishes. Of the many things funded by the Appeal, organizations such as the Cathedral of St. Joseph Food Pantry,

Catholic Worker House, Family Institute of CT, House of Bread, Mercy House and Shelter Corp., My Sister’s Place, and St. Anne Immaculate Conception Food Pantry right here in Hartford received funding from the Appeal’s Vicariate Outreach Program helping to serve our community. This truly

makes a big difference in the lives of many local residents and neighbors. Please visit the Appeal website at archdioceseofhartford.org to learn more and make your gift today.

Knights of Columbus Memorial Day Mass: The Bishop McMahon Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will hold its annual Memorial Day Mass at 10 am on Monday, May 28th at the Mausoleum at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. Everyone is welcome! Rain or shine. Holy Communion will be distributed.

Courage and EnCourage Meetings: Courage International is a Catholic network of confidential

support groups for men and women who experience same-sex attraction and seek to live chaste lives in Christ. The next meeting of Courage will be held on Thursday, June 7th at 7 pm. Courage

International also sponsors separate confidential support groups called EnCourage for those who seek to gain greater understanding and acceptance of their loved-one’s same-sex attraction, while honoring the virtue of chastity. The next meeting of EnCourage will be held on Thursday, June

21st at 7 pm. Courage ministers under the auspices of the Office of Family Life. For the meeting locations and

additional information, please contact Fr. Robert Landback, Chaplain at 203-265-0961 ext. 2 or email him at [email protected]. The website for Courage International is couragerc.org. Dates for Courage and EnCourage meetings are posted on the event calendars for the Archdiocese

of Hartford at archdioceseofhartford.org and the Catholic Transcript at catholictranscript.org.

Safety, Security and Access: The new entrance and elevator are now fully functional, so you may park in the Asylum avenue lot and enter the Cathedral through the west entrance. This makes access to the Cathedral much easier. So that everyone who comes to the Cathedral may pray and worship in peace, we each need to do our part. Obviously we abide by the norm, “If you see something, say something!” As a parish located in the city and with our doors (literally) open to all, extra vigilance is needed. Should you be approached by someone asking for money, please tell one of the priests, one of the two security guards, Peter our Sacristan or one of the ushers or other liturgical ministers. We have procedures in place for assisting those in need or those who might just be “panhandling.” It normally is not a good idea to give cash and please do not agree to give anyone you do not know a ride in your car. Also parents are asked NOT to allow children to go the bathrooms by themselves. They must be accompanied by an adult. Now with the new and much-needed addition, containing an elevator and restrooms, it will be more difficult to know who is actually in the Cathedral at a given moment. Do not leave items unattended in the pews when you go forward to receive Holy Communion.

Parish App: Pope Francis reminds us, “In many

paintings [of the Annunciation] Mary is depicted as seated before an angel with a little book. This

book is the Scriptures. So Mary often listened to God and reflected with Him. The Word of God was her secret: close to her heart, He took on

flesh in her womb.” Our app has prayers & prayer reminders, the

daily readings, Confession reminders, parish messages, Catholic news, the parish calendar & featured events, the bulletin, access to online

tithing, a reminder to silence your cell phone 20 minutes before the Mass you select, and more!

Spirituality and the World’s Major Religions: On Saturday, June 2nd from 9 am-4 pm, you are invited to a one-day workshop on Spirituality and the World’s Major Religions presented by Dr. Maria M. Decsy and Sister Patty Cook PhD. at Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Saint Bartholomew Church in Manchester. Too often we have learned to see the religions of the world in competitive terms of difference and divisions. Let us ponder together the common ground, the wisdom and spiritual treasures that underlie them. We shall consider the ancient religions of India, China, and Japan. We shall look to the Abrahamic religious of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Understanding leads to peace. The fee is $20/person and payment is due at registration. The deadline to register is May 30th. For more information, please contact Kathy Sinnamon, Adult Education Office at Parish of Saint Teresa of Calcutta at 860-643–2403 or [email protected].

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY MAY 27, 2018

Permanent Diaconate Ordination: Archbishop Leonard P. Blair will ordain six men as permanent

deacons at a special Mass on Saturday, June 2nd at 10 am at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. The 2018 candidates for the Permanent Diaconate come from diverse backgrounds and live in different

parts of our Archdiocese. They are: Mr. Albert Cala of Newington, CT; Mr. Alfred Gambone, Jr. of New Milford, CT; Mr. Robert Kiley of West Hartford, CT; Mr. Michael Malfitano of Oakville, CT; Mr. Vincent Raby of Southington, CT; and Mr. John Thorpe of Southington, CT. Congratulations!

These men will join over 175 active and retired-active deacons, who belong to the Permanent Diaconate of the Archdiocese of Hartford, and assist priests with their pastoral duties. The ordination on Saturday will mark the 45th anniversary of the Permanent Diaconate in our Archdiocese and

the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Permanent Diaconate in the United States. A permanent deacon is a man at least 35 years of age who dedicates his service in the threefold

ministry of the Word, of the liturgy, and of charity. A deacon may be married and raising a family or celibate. More often than not, he will have another career outside of the Church. He has specific

responsibilities in assisting the priest in the celebration of the Eucharist and he has other liturgical responsibilities including administering the sacrament of baptism, witnessing marriages, bringing Viaticum to the dying and presiding at liturgies of the Word and Communion services in the absence

of a priest. A permanent deacon is particularly called to exercise special works of charity and justice, especially on behalf of the poor.
