Each of our family members ultimately belongs to God!

In Sacred Scripture, there are no “Hallmark” of sections of sentimentality as to what

the family is all about. In the Bible it is clear that children ultimately belong to God, and that they are to serve the purposes of God. In fact, the ultimate purpose of the family is to train and free people to serve God. This is a strong message yet so very clear. Think for a moment of the awesome story of Abraham and Isaac. How Abraham had longed for a son and, when God had finally granted him Isaac, he could not believe he could love someone so much as he did that child. Yet, when God demanded that he sacrifice his son, through the pain and the tears, he did not hesitate, for Abraham realized that, ultimately, his son belonged to God. Friends, our children, our family members, they belong first to God. And it is in recognizing this that we can accomplish our most important mission in life, that of assisting our loved ones on their journeys towards heaven. Our family members do not belong to us. While it is natural to refer to our children as “these children of mine,” we must never forget that they are first “children of God”.

Even as an Uncle, I recognize how hard it is at times to remember that my nieces and

nephews have a higher purpose than what I might want for them. I can remember when my oldest nephew had called to tell me that we were choosing another college over my alma mater, I said to him tongue and cheek: “No worries, I won’t stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life.” While I thought I was kidding, for years I have felt terrible about what I said, for maybe there was an ulterior motive behind my words. Maybe I really wanted him to choose the school that I had thought was best for me, even though it might not have been for him. God’s purpose for each of us is always an enlivening purpose and is always better than we can imagine for ourselves. In love and in faith, we are to turn those we treasure most in this world over to God and to His purposes. And when we do this, something miraculous happens. We come to love them even more deeply and more profoundly, for it is an authentically gratuitous love, one which God will bless with a patience to move beyond those things that may drive us crazy, like rejecting your Uncle’s alma mater!

The family is the very place where each person is to discern God’s will in his or her life

and be given the support and freedom to accept this mission. And this pertains not only to children but to parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Each of our family members ultimately belongs to God. Thus, when there may be times of divisions in our families, those seemingly irreconcilable dynamics, it is especially during those times that we recall this truth and entrust that person—whose heart may be closed to the love and reconciliation offered by the family—to God!
