Celebrant of the MassArchbishop Thompson will be the celebrant at all Masses at the Cathedral.

StipendsIt is customary that the archbishop receives a stipend for celebrating confirmation Masses at a deanery location and at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral. When there is more than one parish, parishes should share the expense. The amount may vary, depending on the number of candidates and/or the travel distance, but the minimum suggestion is $150.00. The Archdiocesan Finance Office has asked that stipends for the Archbishop be sent through central payroll. When emailing central payroll please indicate his name, the date of the Mass and the amount he is receiving.

The Office of Worship gives a stipend to the master of ceremonies. Parishes do not need to give him an additional stipend.

Choosing a Confirmation Name A candidate may choose a Confirmation name or retain a recognized saint’s name given at Baptism. In either case it is important to have a saint’s name as part of the Confirmation rite. A Confirmation name is a permanent reminder which links the candidate with the way in which the mission of Jesus lives on in those special persons recognized by the Church as saints in its history. The process of researching the life of a saint can be an enriching part of the preparation program and can serve as the basis for reflection on the qualities of a present day witness for Christ. Family members and sponsors can assist the candidate in choosing a Confirmation name.

Letters to the ArchbishopAs part of the candidates’ preparation for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, the archbishop requests that each candidate submit a letter to him. This letter is meant to be more than just a statement from the young person asking for the

4

sacrament. Since he cannot be a part of each and every formation program, the letters help the archbishop to see how the young people have been preparing for this celebration, as well as for life strengthened by the Holy Spirit after the celebration. In addition, so many of the letters stand as a testament to faith and devotion of the young Church, a sign of hope for us all.

Since it is meant to address each young person’s own journey and preparation, the letter should not be a “form letter.” While some guidance may be given, it needs to stand as a composition of that individual. The candidates should note in the letter to which parish they belong.

The archbishop uses the information from the letters as a part of his homily, enabling him to speak to the experiences and needs of the candidates more personally. The archbishop does not use names from the letters in his homily so as not to embarrass anyone, aside from speaking about the selection of the saint name and why.

The letter should answer the following questions:

1. What does Confirmation mean to me? Why am I choosing to be confirmed?2. What saint's name did I choose and why?3. Whom did I choose for my sponsor and why?4. What did I do for my service hours? What did I learn/gain from the experience?

The letters should be submitted to the Office of Worship by the due date found in chapter 2. They may always be submitted earlier.

Letters may be mailed, emailed, or faxed, to the Office of Worship. They may also be addressed to the attention of Christina Tuley and left at the front desk of the Catholic Center. The letters should be submitted as a parish group with a cover letter indicating the parish name, the name of the confirmation coordinator, and the date of confirmation, since many times the archbishop is preparing for multiple celebrations in the same week.

Meeting with the ArchbishopTo further his connection with the young church, the archbishop wants to spend time with the candidates and their sponsors before the celebration of the Mass. Candidates and sponsors should come to the Catholic Center and gather in the Assembly Hall no later than 6:00 pm. The archbishop will meet with them for approximately 40 minutes. Several adults should be present to quiet the crowd and remain with them during their time with the archbishop.

When the archbishop has concluded his time with the candidates and sponsors, the adult coordinators should line up the candidates and sponsors to make their way across to the Cathedral in an orderly and prayerful manner. They should go immediately to their seats. To ensure safety please use the crosswalk symbols.

Parents and guests should come directly to the cathedral upon their arrival.

Photos with the ArchbishopArchbishop Thompson will be available for photos after Mass.

5

Contact sheet Parishes celebrating in a cluster are encouraged to be in contact as soon as possible. One person should be chosen as the overall contact person for the planning. This person will be responsible for communicating with the Office of Worship about details of the Mass.

A coordinator of music should also be chosen. This person will be responsible for choosing music, working with a cantor, and communicating with Andrew Motyka. If parishes are unable to provide music leadership, Andrew Motyka should be contacted immediately.

Once the above two people are chosen the contact sheet should be completed and returned to the Office of Worship immediately.

Selection of Readings and Proper Prayers in 2019 When allowed in the liturgical calendar, the parishes celebrating the Sacrament of

Confirmation in 20198 will use a standard set of readings from the Ritual Mass – For the Conferral of Confirmation. There are 4 exceptions in the spring of 2019.

April 23 The Octave of Easter Lectionary #262April 24 The Octave of Easter Lectionary #263

The proper prayers for the Mass of the day will be used on the above dates. The vestment color is white on the above dates.

All other celebrations will use the standard set of readings found below.

First Reading: Lectionary # 764.5 Joel 2:23, 26-27; 3:1-3

A reading from the book of the prophet Joel

Children of Zion, exult and rejoice in the LORD, your God! You shall eat and be filled, and shall praise the name of the LORD, your God, because he has dealt wondrously with you; my people shall nevermore be put to shame. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the LORD, your God, and there is no other; my people shall nevermore be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit upon all humankind. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions; even upon the servants and the handmaids, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. And I will work wonders in the heavens.

The word of the Lord.

Second Reading: Lectionary #765:12 Ephesians 4:1-6

A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians

I, Paul, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

The word of the Lord.

8

Gospel: Lectionary #767:7 Luke 10:21-24

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Proper prayers will also be taken from the Ritual Mass. The vestment color is red.

VESTURE Concelebrating priest(s) should bring their own alb. Chasubles and stoles will be provided by the Cathedral. Deacon dalmatics and server albs will be provided by the Cathedral.

9

CHAPTER 3 MUSIC FOR CONFIRMATION

To promote consistent quality of both musical selections and leadership at liturgies at the Cathedral, Andrew Motyka will assist in planning music for the Mass and serving as a musician during the Confirmation Mass.

Choice of MusicAll Confirmation Masses at the Cathedral will have a set of music that is sung. This does not cover every musical moment of the Mass, but most will be standardized. There will be some room for musical choices by the individual parishes involved. Music selections should be included on Form B.

The scores for the standard set of music can be found at http://www.archindy.org/worship/music.html

Music during AnointingWhile there is a suggested piece for music during anointing, any appropriate instrumental, choral, congregational, or combination of such, can be used at this time. Please note that anointing typically takes 9-10 seconds per candidate, so please time your selections accordingly.

Bilingual MassesIt is understood that Masses which incorporate Spanish have different musical needs. Please contact Andrew Motyka to work out musical selections for these Masses.

MusiciansCelebrating parishes are encouraged to bring their own cantors, choirs, and other musicians to celebrate Mass at the Cathedral. If this is not possible, or if it is simpler to not bring an outside group, the Office of Worship will have musicians available to play and/or sing for these Masses. Each Mass must, at a bare minimum, have one instrumentalist and a separate cantor. Choice of musicians should be submitted to the Office of Worship no later than 3 weeks before the Confirmation date.

Available Musical ResourcesWhen planning music for the liturgy, please know that the following resources are available at the Cathedral:

The Cathedral organ. A grand piano in the sanctuary which already has a mic on the sound board. Separate microphones at the cantor stand and ambo. 2 choir microphones that can amplify a group of up to 30 or so. 4 individual microphones with stands that can be connected to an auxiliary

soundboard for mics and amplified instruments. 16 music stands.
