The Reverend Michelle Edmonds with The Rt. Revd. Jonathan Clark, Bishop of Croydon. Community and clergy welcome Revd Michelle to All Saints’ Church On Monday 31st October, a special service was held at All Saints’ Church in Warlingham for the Insti- tution and Induction of The Reverend Michelle Ed- monds as Team Rector for the Team Ministry of War- lingham with Chelsham and Farleigh. The Rt. Revd. Jonathan Clark, Bishop of Croydon, attended the service to perform the rite of Institu- tion and The Venerable Moira Astin, the Archdea- con of Reigate, performed the Induction. The church was packed for the service, with standing-room only at the back, as the commu- nity turned out to wel- come Revd. Michelle as their new Team Rector. Current and past members of the clergy from other local churches, including the Team Minstry of Cater- ham, Whyteleafe and Chaldon, also attended the service, to share the im- portant occasion. During his sermon, the Rt. Revd. Jonathan Clark said that it was the first time he had ever at- tended an Institution and Induction at Halloween! He then explained that All Hallows Day is in fact an- other name for All Saints’ Day making it a timely date for a special service in All Saints’ Church. Following the service a reception was held in the Church Hall at Warling- ham Green. Blanchman’s Farm Local Nature

Reserve Committee calls for more

volunteers at its AGMOn Wednesday 26th October, the Blanchman’s Farm LocalNature Reserve Committeeheld its AGM in Warlingham Vil-lage Hall. The official businessof the AGM was followed by apresentation about Blanch-man’s Farm by the Chairman ofthe Committee, Alex Baxter-Brown. Alex explained how the Com-mittee had been formed totake over the management ofthe 54 acres of land from Tan-dridge District Council back inthe 1990s, to protect it frombeing developed into housing.Rather than become a newhousing estate, the land, offLimpsfield Road in Warlingham, has been carefully managed asa community wildlife area forthe recreation of local people.Alex said: “Since our Commit-tee formed 25 years ago. wehave been trying to maintainthe rural feel of the area byplanting native trees and car-rying out coppicing work. Backin the ‘90s, with the help of ourvolunteers, we planted 10,000

trees that are all native to thisarea. They are found on thissoil type so the nature reservehas as natural-based wildlifeas possible. They includedfruit trees to produce nectarand fruit for the birds, butthere is a lot of work to do tomaintain them.”Since new houses were built inMayes Close, drainage hasbeen a problem but two boreholes have recently been in-stalled which should resolvethe issue providing they areproperly maintained. Alex said that all year round alot of work has to be done tolook after the nature reserve.Work is currently being carriedout on the board walk and theentrance from LimpsfieldRoad. An “easy-access” trailwas put in two years agowhich requires ongoing work. Alex said: “We have to try andstrike the best balance that isgood for nature but also goodfor people who use the area,so we have appointed an ecol-ogist to assist in how to main-tain Blanchman’s Farm as alocal nature reserve. Thespecies diversity needs con-stant management and the

Members of the Blanchman’s Farm Local Nature ReserveCommittee at the AGM.

biodiversity is increasing. Weneed to grow our volunteer re-source if we are to continue tomaintain Blanchman’s Farm.”Volunteer Days are held at theFarm on the second Saturdayof every month from 10am-1pm and the Committee islooking to introduce more vol-unteer sessions during theweek. New volunteers are al-ways welcome and no experi-ence is necessary. For moreinformation e-mail [email protected] or phonePam Mascall on 01883626694. Warlingham residents concernedabout the loss of character of thevillage if development is permittedon Green Belt land have started upthe ‘Save Warlingham’s Green Belt’Facebook page to help raise aware-ness of sensitive sites listed in Tan-dridge District Council’s Local Plan.Sites of particular concern includeland identified on Green Hill Lanewhich could potentially accommo-date 50 new homes, and a site ad-jacent to Kennel Farm in Chelsham, identified in the Local Plan docu-mentation as having a potential siteyield of 40 homes. The Local Plan Sites Consultationthat ends on Friday 30th Decemberwill include evidence that can beused to protect the Green Belt in thelong term. It is important that localresidents take part in the consulta-tion process to make it as robust aspossible to resist unwelcome devel-opment. Speaking about the Green Belt, Leaderof Tandridge District Council, Cllr. Mar-tin Fisher, said: “We, as well as all theother Districts, are having to do GreenBelt assessments as part of the LocalPlan. We are not doing the assess-ments because we want to developthe Green Belt, it is because we wantto protect it, but for some reason peo-ple think we suddenly want to build all

over it when we do not. To protect itwe have to have a robust Local Planthat everyone can be happy with butwe have to go through a very complexregulatory process.” An extension to an existing settlementat either South Godstone or BlindleyHeath is another possibility under con-sultation, as an alternative to furtherinfill in the established settlements inTandridge.

St. Mary’s Church

launches ‘Caterham-

on-the-Ale’

As part of the celebration of150 years of St. Mary’sChurch, Caterham-on-the-Hill,a plan was hatched to have aspecial beer brewed for thewinter, following a centuriesold tradition of the Christianchurch communities. As the quantities of beer thatwould be required were goingto be beyond any attempt to“home brew”, the team at St.Mary’s Church decided to lookat getting a beer brewed pro-fessionally by a local brewery. As St. Mary’s Church is part ofthe Diocese of Southwark, thechurch approached SouthwarkBrewing who are with the dio-ces and based less than a milefrom Southwark Cathedral. After several months a finalplan for the beer was agreed. The run would be a one-offlimited edition of 2,000 bot-tles (660 litres). It would be adark winter ale, in the style ofa porter, but not too strong,as would have been traditionalin historic church ales. On the 20th October South-wark Brewing began thebrewing process, and the Rev-erend Canon Duncan Swan,Vicar of St. Mary’s Church andHonorary Canon of Southwark

Geoff Izzard selling bottles ofCaterham-on-the-Ale at theSt. Mary’s Christmas Fair. Cathedral, visited the breweryto bless the beer during itsinitial brewing process.A week later the beer wasbottled, labelled and boxed, all by hand by the SouthwarkBrewing team, and deliveredto St. Mary’s Church.Geoff Izzard, member of St.Mary’s Church, said: “The aleis proving very popular andwhen it is all sold we will havemade a good profit of £2,000for the church.“We would like to say a big“thank you” to our sponsors -Buxton Building ContractorsLtd., Caterham Dental Care,Champ Consultants, Park &Bailey Estate Agents, TheCaterham Link and SwiftWindows.”

Eating Out

The new Indian takeaway in Croydon Road.

New takeaway

‘Secrets of India’

opens in CaterhamReview by Julia Church

A brand new Indian takeawayhas recently opened at 62Croydon Road called Secrets ofIndia. My daughter Jenny and Ienjoyed a takeaway from thereafter the switching on of theWarlingham Christmas Lightson 19th November. It was alovely warming way to follow afabulous but chilly communityevent!Jenny ordered her favourite, acreamy Chicken Korma and Iordered the Vegetarian optionof the traditional, mediumspiced Palak dish which also of-fered Chicken, King Prawn,Lamb and Prawn options.Jenny also chose the KingPrawn Butterfly and I chose theGarlic Mushrooms, from the Ap-petisers section of the menu, asaccompaniments and togetherwith sharing a Pilau Rice andPeshwari Naan the quantity offood was perfect, with plenty forseconds. Both curry disheswere very large portions andJenny’s King Prawn was also agood size. Jenny said the juicy

King Prawn was mildly spicedand the Chicken Korma wasvery tender, with a beautiful, delicately spiced flavour withthe creaminess that Jennyloves. My Vegetable Palak was a med-ley of vegetables includingpotato, sweetcorn, spinach, onion, tomato, green beans andcauliflower. I have not had aPalak dish before and it is now anew favourite of mine, with itswonderful combination of spiceshitting the spot. The generousportion of garlic mushroomswent very well with the vegeta-bles and was not too garlicky. Secrets of India offers gener-ous discounts for collection or

Vegetable Palak, GarlicMushrooms and Pilau Rice.free home delivery (seebelow). Go to www.caterham-takeaway.com for their fullmenu and to order online.
