“Kayaker’s Pavilion” serves as a resting area and storage area for kayakers. It includes a storage area for kayaks and oars, seating area, restroom, and viewing platform. e structure of “Kayaker’s Pavilion” was inspired by the motion of a kayaker’s oars which informed the folds that unwrap outwards. is allowed each “fold” of the pavilion to introduce their own unique purpose including a clerestory, a staircase, and a ramp for example. Due to the folds unfolding up and creasing over, each side of the building has a very dierent experience of approach and entrance. From the back, the movement of a visitor is very controlled and strict as there are less varied paths of use and movement. e visitor can either ascend up the stairs or into the enclosed seating space. From the front entrance, kayaker’s paddle underneath to store their kayaks and cir-culate up the ramp into the intrior storage space. ere are much more varied paths of movement and order from this side of the structure which creates two very contrasting conditions within a simple pavilion. Despite the pavlilion’s purpose of providng shade and an enclosing space of rest from the sun, “Kayaker’s Pavilion” still connects the visitor inside to their surounding natural environment. e glass oor within the rest space allows the visitors to see the water below as well as their stored kayak’s, connecting them to the experience of the site as a whole. e pavilion is made out of corten steel so that the structure blends into the ground as to give the impression of its structure unfolding from the Earth and dipping into the edge of the river.
