Our college vision statement is Shaping the Future Through Learning, and through the many offerings showcased in this edition of Catch The Wave, we strive

to help you shape your own future, whatever your dreams may be. Created by public vote in 1987, we are Lincoln County’s college. Our purpose is to meet the needs of community members such as you. Whether your goal is to take a single class for enrichment (bird-watching or guitar, anyone?), or to com-plete your first two years of a Bachelor’s degree (will you be a Duck or a Beaver?), or to grow your business by working with our Small Business Devel-opment Center, we can

help you realize your goals. We pride ourselves on our award-winning

faculty, small class sizes, beautiful facilities, and extraordinary support services. We are looking ahead to the future so that we evolve to meet the needs of the many com-

munities in Lincoln County. For example, we are significantly growing the offerings at our Lincoln City site with the intent that over the next few years students will be able to complete a two-year degree in Lincoln City.

We have added community education classes in Turkish culture, Spanish and mussel harvesting. Our SBDC offers new classes like business law and “Winning with Google.” And, a new Community Develop-ment Block Grant through Lincoln County offers tuition scholarships for business owners across the county, based on income. If it has been a while since you have taken advantage of all we have to offer, now is the time to take another look. I also want to hear from you. What do you think OCCC should do to support the future you have in mind?

I have now been with Oregon Coast Com-munity College for five months, and lived in Lincoln County for six. Every day I am more energized by the wonderful faculty, staff and students of the college, and our many supporters in the county and beyond. It is my honor and privilege to live and work among you, and to see students shaping futures for themselves and their communi-ties every day. Thank you to the residents of Lincoln County for your continued support of the college.

Welcome to Oregon Coast Community College!

On the CoverBethany Cronin graduated this year with a one-year certificate from the OCCC Aquarium Science Program. She

worked as a part-time aquarist at the Hatfield Marine Science Center while in the program, and did her internship there. Bethany is currently employed as a full-time aquarist at Wonders of Wildlife Aquarium in Springfield, Mis-souri. This photo was taken on a field trip for the Biology of Captive Fishes course last year. Students head out on a charter vessel and collect live specimens and bring them back to the Aquarium Science building. In the process, they learn how to collect and handle fish in the field, and maintain the fish through transportation and acclimation into an aquarium. Fish are then monitored and cared for over the term. Any fish lost are used in a dissection lab for the class. OCCC photo.

History The Seatauqua (see- TALK-

This year, Oregon Coast Com-munity College and the Hatfield Marine Science Center began the process of reviving Seatauqua, with special events this Fall and Winter terms.

To suggest a topic for an upcoming Seatauqua OCCC Com-munity Education course, or to ask about serving as an instructor, contact Shirley Hill at [email protected].

Breeze Powell started attending classes at Oregon Coast Community College two years ago, during the Winter term of 2012. She

had decided to pursue a career in nursing, and her first step was to complete the pre-requisite courses needed to enter into the nursing program.

After completing the program, Breeze plans to continue her education and complete a master’s degree in nurse midwifery.

“I have even considered taking it a step further and working toward a doctorate degree,” she said. “This would allow me to work toward identifying problems and finding solutions in the midwife profession. I have always been very passionate about midwifery and childbirth and a lot of my drive stems from wanting to provide teaching to mothers, families, and the community at large.”

When asked what she tells her friends and family about her time at Oregon Coast Community College, Breeze says her family and friends have had the “joy and burden” of hearing about her personal accomplishments and trials during her time at Oregon Coast.

That said, Breeze notes, “I cannot begin to express how supported I have felt by the faculty and my fellow students here at OCCC. I feel that I have been able to accomplish a great deal in a short amount of time, and in my opinion that is a direct reflection of the quality that exists here at OCCC. I am extremely grateful that this is where I am creating my foundation for the future of my career.”

“I have had a lot of wonderful times here, Breeze said. “A few that stick out would be my time in Anatomy and Physiology with Mr. Nash, turning in my application to the nursing program, getting accepted to the nursing program, followed by a nice quiet summer attending mixed media in the art lab, and most recently getting to practice injections on my fellow classmates!”

Taking an important step like heading back to school isn’t easy for anyone, as Breeze could tell you. If you think you’re ready for that challenge, and that adventure, it’s time to set up an appointment with an academic advisor at Oregon Coast. They’ll help you decide what direction is best for you and your goals, as well as answer questions about financial aid, placement and much more.

“I am sure there will be many more memories made over the next couple of years,” Breeze says, “and I am looking forward to all of them.”

Start making your memories today. Call 541-867-8501 to schedule an appointment with an advisor.

OCCC student Joy Lee is currently under consideration for a coveted Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship.

Oregon community college scholars are honored each year at the capitol, when two students from each college are recognized by high-ranking public officials and offered scholarships to participating four-year institutions to continue their education. The students chosen represent excellence in the classroom, intellectual curiosity outside the classroom, evidence of substantial development of their talents and the ability to

share this development with oth-ers. This is a very prestigious Phi Theta Kappa award and honor.

“I am so glad that I made the decision to complete my educa-tion at Oregon Coast Commu-nity College,” Joy said. “So many wonderful events have happened since I first started. I have met some wonderful friends, and the staff and faculty have always been very supportive of me. I

have learned more than I ever thought possible. I am doing things that I have always wanted to do. I have joined Associated Student Government where I do events like BBQ’s and community events like beach clean ups. My biggest accomplishment is joining PTK (the Phi Theta Kappa honor society). I was so elated when I was accepted into the club.

“Going to college has helped me believe in myself. I have had students my age tell me that I am an inspiration to them because I am finally finish-ing something I started 15 years ago. I hope that I can be a role model for these students, to let them know at no matter what age they are, they can still go back to school and succeed.

“This nomination is one of the best things that has happened in my life. It’s like a breath of fresh air. All of my hard work is beginning to pay off, and it helps me to stay focused on my goals and dreams.”

Congratulations and best wishes, Joy, from all of us at Oregon Coast!

Succeeding at OCCC

Tuition scholarships available for businesses county-wideThanks to tremendous support from Lincoln County officials, and diligent

effort by the SBDC staff, the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center has secured a Community Development Block Grant that will help cover the cost of tuition in most SBDC classes and programs for Lincoln County business owners with five or fewer employees, and who meet certain income criteria. Most Lincoln County business owners would qualify for grant support if they request it.

The process is simple: Just call the SBDC at 541-994-4166 to request a meet-ing with an SBDC advisor. They’ll provide a few forms to determine if you’re eligible, and then will work with you to determine what courses and support are necessary for you to reach your goals, whether it’s simply to ramp-up your online marketing efforts, or to more broadly improve your business opera-tions across many areas.

Lincoln City grant continuesAnd, for businesses located within Lincoln City’s Urban Renewal District,

economic development grant funds are still available from the Lincoln City Urban Renewal Agency. These funds can underwrite the cost of tuition for cer-tain SBDC classes and programs in an effort to improve the health and vitality of the district’s business community.

For details on all of these programs, call us at 541-994-4166 or visit www.oregoncoastbusiness.com.

OCCC tech instructor Misty Lambrecht leads a class at the Lincoln City Center this term.

Oregon Coast Community College is pleased to welcome a new member to its Student Services team. Julie Anderson is an Ameri-Corps VISTA volunteer working as the Veteran Student Services Co-ordinator. She was selected by OCCC and by the host organization, Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC), for this new position.

ORCC places many AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers at college campuses throughout Oregon to improve student success. Julie is involved in a variety of projects this year to build OCCC’s capac-ity to serve veterans and veterans’ dependents who attend the college.

She is researching veterans’ programs at other community col-leges, implementing a veteran tutoring program, enhancing the veterans’ component of OCCC’s new Career and Transfer Readi-ness Center, and is building partnerships with stakeholders in the Lincoln County community. Each of these projects will improve the retention, degree completion, and overall success of OCCC’s veteran students.

Julie is from St. Paul, Minn., and is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, Morris. She is excited to experience living on the Oregon Coast and working at OCCC. For more information about services for veterans at OCCC or the new Career and Transfer Readiness Center, please call 541-867-8501.

Now, even more help for OCCC students

Oregon Coast Community College began offering the National Career Readiness Certificate Assessments in November 2014.

There are a total of three WorkKeys assessments, two of which help meet the essential skills requirements for high school graduation: reading for information and applied math. The third assessment gauges skills in locating information, and completes the requirement needed to earn the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).

The NCRC is an industry-recognized, nationally normed, evidence-based credential that certifies essential skills needed for workplace success. The three assessments evaluate many skills, including: problem solving, critical thinking, reading

and using work-related text, applying mathematical reasoning to work-related problems, locating, synthe-sizing, and applying information presented graphically. Individuals can earn the NCRC by taking the follow-ing three assessments, and scoring a level bronze or higher:

• Applied Mathematics• Locating Information• Reading for information

The NCRC Certificate is utilized by thousands of employers and job applicants. The NCRC Certificate provides an accurate measurement of what an individual can do, rather than what they know.

It is a portable, industry-recognized credential that verifies “work readiness.” Earning a NCRC Certificate can help candidates obtain a job, keep a job or earn a promo-tion. Having NCRC Certification also looks good on a resumé. Oregon Coast Community College is commit-ted to providing its students and members of the community every opportunity to obtain gainful employ-ment. The NCRC assessments can assist in that endeavor.

Anyone interested in taking the NCRC assessments must first register with the Work Source Oregon Management Information System (WOMIS) and to use the Job Seeker ID number that system generates as

the NCRC Examinee ID number when taking the NCRC assessments. Registration takes most people between five and ten minutes to complete. Examinees may register at a WorkSource Oregon physical location or remotely from any computer.

NCRC participants do not have to complete the entire Welcome process. CCWD encourages all NCRC participants to complete the Initial Skills Review (ISR), as it is an indicator for potential success on the NCRC.

If you are interested in taking the NCRC assessments, you can either contact the Newport employment office at 120 NE Avery St. to complete the Welcome process, or you can go to www.imatchskills.org to register to take the NCRC assess-ments. Once registered, you can call the OCCC Testing Center at 541-867-8505 to make an appointment to take the NCRC assessments.

Alex Hirota is an aquarium science

certificate student who graduated last summer. Alex came into the certificate program as a graduate of Oregon State University with a B.S. degree in biology. Alex was awarded the SEAL (Serve, Earn And Learn) scholarship in aquarium science and assisted with weekly laboratory care and set-up.

During the fall term, Alex took it upon himself to learn a computer drafting program called Sketch-Up. He used the skills he learned to build computer models for a term project in the life support class and, later, for several of the aquarium systems in the aquarium science building (see image).

Alex was a top performer in the life support class,

earning a high score on the Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators Level One Operator test to receive a certificate in this capacity. His high score and overall grade in the class earned him a full sponsorship from industry partners to attend the Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators Symposium in Las Vegas, where he attended workshops and conference

proceedings and was able to take and pass the Level 2 Life Support Operators exam and gain the certificate.

Alex continued to excel in classes within the OCCC Aquarium Science Program and as a SEAL scholar, and was accepted to an internship for the summer at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography

in San Diego, Calif. Immediately at the end of his internship with Birch Aquarium, Alex accepted a position at the Wonders of Wildlife Aquarium in Springfield, Mo., where he joined a team, including two other recent graduates of the OCCC Aquarium Science Program. He works as a full-time, permanent aquarist to help open what is currently the nation’s largest aquarium renovation project which opens to the public this year.

Oregon Coast Community College Aquarium Science graduates are sought-after by the leading aquariums in the United States. If you’d like to find out if Aquarium Science is the right career path for you, visit oregoncoastcc.org/aquarium-science.
