CATARACT If you see them, they will see the world. ..

Cataract which can cause blindness if not treated is generally seen within the elderly in Turkey is also seen in the African continent. Be-sides old age, cataract in Africa is also caused by malnutrition, being under bright light for a long period of time and eye traumas as well.

Because of technical and material inconveniences, millions of cata-ract patients lose their ability to see because they can not operate and depend on others in a way.

IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation continues to support almost tens of thousands of people to hold on to life and become hope for cataract patients with the Africa Cataract Project which was put into practice in 2007. Also the project continues to strengthen the connection of brotherhood between Turkish and African people. In the upcoming period we aim to do cataract studies in different parts of the world as well as in Africa.

What is cataract?Cataract is a disease which could cause blindness if not cured and usually seen in elder people is a situation of blurry vision as a result of lensof the eye loses its clearness.

• Inadequate of healthy nutrition• Unhealthy water and hygiene conditions• Desert sand which hits the eye• Health services can not be reached because of financial problems• Right angle solar rays• Old age• Congenital Cataract • Rareness of health centers, absence of doctors and medical staff

Many people in their early ages have cataract and lose their ability of vision because of climatic factors, nutrition and hygiene problems. With the addition of absence of ophthalmologists and the inadequacy of treatment opportunities to all these, many patients are sentenced in darkness before they have surgery especially in the countryside.

such as infection in the eye or elevates patient’s eye pressure.

Cataract surgery is an operation which is performed with the FAKOmethod, a modern cataract surgery, or surgical method. Operation is

much more the case of removing of the cataract and replacing it with an artificial intra ocular lens.

“I saw you, I saw you”

Mehmet Yılmaz(Supporter of the Niger Eye Hospital-2014)

Five surgeries have been performed in the opening of the Niger Eye Hospital, we became the witnesses of people who met with light within approximately 15

minutes and were affected deeply. It is not possible to describe their happiness and pleasure. Especially, the reaction of a middle aged female has stuck in my mind.

The surgeon who performed the operation opened her eye patch and shook his hands in a way that she could see, patient had started exclaiming of “I can see you,

I can see you!” her excitement really had affected.
