    FOREWORD

Wherever piping is subject to vertical movement, a simple rigid hange rcan only provide proper support for the pipe in one position . Thefunction of a spring hanger is to provide continuous support for thepipe in all positions and relieve pipe stresses which could reach critica lproportions in the pipe itself or in connected equipment .The purpose of this catalog is to provide clearly detailed informationfrom which suitable spring units can be selected for the widest possibl evariety of applications .Our engineering staff will be pleased to review your pipe suspensio nproblems with you, whether they apply to high temperature power plantpiping or to cryogenic applications with temperatures to -320 F .

    The RIGID ,00` SPRING employs a unique design which overcomes the many difficulties inherent ithe installation of variable spring hangers .The helical spring in each unit is pre-set in our shop to the pipe "cold load" position and is lockeagainst deflection UP or DOWN* until the pipe line is ready for operation, at which time the sidelocking bolts are removed .The RIGID r SPRING therefore provides support to the pipe ;

(1 ) In its installed (COLD) position.(2) During expansion from COLD to HOT position .(3) At its operating'(HOT) position .

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SInstall the RIGID ,r SPRING as if it were a component part of a simple rigid pipe hanger . Take uall slack in the hanger rod, and then tighten the upper and lower hanger rod lock nuts .After the pipe line and all hangers are completely erected, and the hydrostatic test made, remove thside-locking bolts from the housing and the spring is free to deflect .Without further adjustment the spring will accurately support the pipe as the pipe expands to itoperating (HOT) position .In event that the pipe line is required to be dismantled, replace the side-locking bolts in the RIGI~ SPRING housing and the spring unit can be easily removed and stpred for re-use . The sprinlocking feature eliminates the need for extra long hanger rod threads and their tendency to strip whebeing turned under heavy spring loads .*An exclusive patent of Piping Specialties, Inc .

    LOAD-DEFLECTIOTABRIGID .~ S P R I N G

The RIGID.PRING Load-Deflection tableshown on this page is a graphic chart of springdeflections from minimum load to maximumload positions .RESERVED AREA (gray) A portion of the totalavailable deflection at each end of the springmovement is reserved to provide for some underor over-loading due to insulation, fittings orvalves which may be lighter or heavier thananticipated.WORKING RANGE (white) The white area in th ecentral portion of the chart represents the springworking range. Both HOT and COLD load posi-tions must be in the same vertical column unde rSpring Size, and within the actual working range .

RATED LOAD We recommend that every sprinwhich is selected operate as closely as passiblto its RATED LOAD shown in boldface type anlocated in the middle of the working rangeSPRING DEFLECTION The actual spring deflectionin inches and fractions for the three groups oRIGID ,.' SPRINGS are listed vertically in thoutside columns. Posted directly against thdeflections are the supporting forces exerteby the springs throughout their full operatinrange .SPRING SCALE The spring scale of each spring ishown across the bottom of the table and indicates the spring flexibility in pounds per incof deflection.

Supply, Design, and Engineering Service sThe fundamental concept of the type of Hanger Supply Service required for a particular

project must embrace certain basic factors:(a ) The type and size of the project, and the custom of the contractor's forces .(b) The geographic location of the project and the urgency for completion .(c) A sensible plan for engineered or designed hangers where necessary, and the eliminatio n

of special hangers, for economy, where possible .(d ) Competent and careful design and supply of all hangers for critical piping and "problem"lines. "Paper economies" in this type of work are false economies .Several types of Hanger Supply Services have been developed to satisfy the requirementsof most piping projects. The proper selection of service will result in the most economical in-stalled cost of a satisfactory job, completed on time, with the desired balance between field an dshop fabrication .

TYPe I Hanger components supplied to customer's material lists, as catalogue items, shippedin bulk for field location, partial fabrication and erection .This is material supply only for normal pipe installation .

Type II Shop fabrication from customer's hanger detail and location drawings. Hangersshop-assembled, painted and marked for field erection .

Used mainly for small industrial jobs and changes or additions to existing proces spiping .Type III Locate and specify necessary hangers with hanger mark numbers on piping drawings .Supply simple hanger detail drawings (required for shop fabrication) to the field as an aid t oinstallation. Detail and supply all necessary auxiliary steel . Supply hangers shop-assembled,painted and marked, for field erection .

This method is recommended for industrial and process piping, paper mills, andsundry piping systems in large projects .Type IV Hangers for critical piping completely engineered ; semi-engineered hangers for non-critical piping over 2-1/2 inch diameter; both types shop-assembled, painted and marked.Complete hanger detail drawings supplied. Small non-critical piping hangers either suppliedas in Type mor may be supplied as bulk material for field erection.Recommended for oil refineries, chemical plants, some power plants, and industrialpiping in certain applications .Type V

A complete hanger design and supply service. Starting from the piping, structuralsteel, and auxiliary equipment drawings; completely engineered hangers and auxiliary stee lare supplied to the field ready for installation This is a complete, guaranteed service withnothing omitted .This service is applicable to power plants and critical or experimental piping in anyindustry .Type VI "Problem" lines either existing or proposed, may be singled out for special atten-tion . A complete engineering study of the problem is made, and piping recommendations andsuitable hanger designs supplied .

"Tailored-to-Measure" combinations of the above services, utilizing your standardsand procedures will develop the ultimate in economy and service . Such a program canbest be determined personally. We would welcome the opportunity to review yourrequirements .

Constant Support Hangers are usually specifiedfor the support of critical pipe lines such asMain Steam or Reheated Steam pipes in powerplant work. Although at some load supportingpoints the thermal vertical pipe deflection ma ybe small, Constant Support Hangers are valu-able in reducing the effect of variations in pipeloading on the connected equipment .Constant Support Hangers are recommendedin any case where pipe movements exceed 2inches .The design of these hangers is based upon thetheory of opposing moments. As the pipe ofconstant weight deflects upward or downwardit is supported by a varying spring force actingupon a changing moment arm, to produce a non-varying upward supporting force to the pipe .

A complete line of Constant Support assemblies is available in severalstandard models and in sizes to support pipes having vertical movementand loading to suit your requirements .Complete brochure is available upon request .

E . MYATT & CO . INC .General Descriptio nthe constant Support designed and manufactured by F . Matt & Co. incorporates the latest design concepts . resulting in a constant supporting clTct throug hthe total travel of the unit . The sim plified construction, together with the esta blished principle of a com pression spring working in conjunction with a hel lcrank lever , achieves a m athema tica l ly per fect counter balancing of spr ing and load mom ents about the m ain pivot point .With a fixed spring housing of substantial construction the unit can be installed in many arrangements . The spring housing preve nts the ingress of loreig nbodies such as construction debris . thus reducing the danger of dam age or restriction of the unit's functio nStandard RangeE . Myatt & Co . Constant Supports are constructed to accommodate loads between 12 Kg and 45700 Kg with a standard range of travels from 40 mm to 41 0111111 in 10 1 1 1 1 1 1 i nc rements .Constant supports are m anufactured having a m aximum deviat ion of 6% of the specified loa dUpper and lower travel stops are incorporated in all units to prevent exce ssive overtrav el .All supports are fitted with a clea rly visible travel sc ale .Special RangeSpecial Constant Supports are designed to suit customer's specific requirements i .e . higher loads . lower deviation . trave ls and c onfigurations other than thos eindicated in the standard range .Load AdjustmentAlthough the supports are preset to the custome r ' s specified load and travel , i t is sometimes necessary to ad just this preset load to ac comm odate mino rvariations in ac tual site conditions . A simple opera tion of turning the load adjuster screw in the appropriate direction to increase or dec rease the load is al lthat is necessary . T he am ount of ad justment is shown on the a d jacent scale ca l ibrated in 2 % divisions . The max imum a djustment being -1-20% of the m ea nload .PresettingAll Constant Supports are fitted 1v ith preset pins . These pins are f actory positioned within the unit to suit the custome r's specified installation condition . O ncom pletion of installation and prior to remova l of pins . the pipework system can be hydraulically tested or acid cleaned without further deflection of th espring assembly . The preset pins must he removed before commissioning the system (refer to installation instructions) .Our sta ndard presetting pins will enable loads of up to twice the c apa city of the support to be take n during the hydraulic testing period .Should it he necessary to carry loads in excess of this, we must be notified at time of ordering to ensure the supports are designed with adequate safet y. ~ . mar gins .Infinitely Variable Travel Locking MechanismThe C onstant Support ma y be fitted with an infinitely va riable locking device (within the trave l limits of the unit) that will lock the support thus preventin gupward and downward movement for temporary conditions of underload or overload .The locking mechanism is only incorporated when specified, and is painted red .The locking mechanism should always be positioned at the extreme of the adjustment before the pipework system is commissioned .Selectio nTo select a Constant Support . first calculate the load and travel witch the support is to accommodate .it is then good prac tice to add overtrave l to the calculate d travel .Recommended overtravel : A dd 25 mm for travel up to 125 mm .

For travels in excess of 1 2 5 m m a dd 2 0% of the ca lculated travel .This should then be rounded up to next whole 10 mm increment giving the total travel thus enabling a standard support to be selected . To determine th ecorrect constant support refer to the selection table and select a support frame size to accommodate the calculated load and the total travel . it should be note dthat the travel given in the table is the total travel, this being the maximum vertical travel the unit will accommodate .W hen selecting ver t ica l constants (Fig C5 1 only) these should a lways be selected below the heavy l ine .Finis hAll units are painted with E. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION S1 .0 Attachment to Supporting Steelwor k

The Constant Support Units are attached to the supporting steelwork by means of welding or bolting . (See datasheets for details) .

2 .0 Connecting and Loading of Constant Support Unit s2 .1 In the case of Constant Support Units fig . C50-05I-052-053 utilizing sling rods, these should be connected

between the equipment support attachment and the support unit connector (turnbuckle or yoke). The load i stransferred from the temporary installation condition to the Constant Support Unit by adjustment of th eturnbuckle or yoke arrangement .The Correct load setting is attained by adjusting the turnbuckle or yoke arrangement until the preset pin is easil yremoved .

2 .2 In the case of Constant Support Units fig . C54 and C55 where the equipment is supported from below, th eConstant Support Unit is positioned between the equipment support bracket and supporting steelwork ,differences in height are accommodated using the height adjustment nut . The load is transferred from thetemporary installation condition to the Constant Support Unit by further adjustment of the height adjusting nut .The correct load setting is attained by rotation of the height adjusting nut until the preset pin is easily removed .

3 .0 Pre-Commissioning3 .1 The preset pins should normally remain in position for any pre-commissioning overload conditions, but must b e

removed prior to operation and stored for future use .

4.0 Load Adjustment4 .1 In the event that the load is greater or lesser than the load for which the unit is calibrated, it will be necessary t omake use of the load adjustment facility .The load adjuster allows for an increase or decrease of load carrying capacity of plus or minus 20 percent o fthe mean load accordingly. The load adjustment scale is calibrated in 2 per cent divisions .

5 .0 Operating5 .1 Prior to start up the following checks must be carried out .

5 .1 .1 All preset pins are removed and stored .5 .1 .2 The unit travel indicator is set at the correct cold setting .

5 .2 During normal running operation a check should be made to ensure that the unit travel indicator is at th ecorrect hot position .

5 .3 A periodic check during the first few month of operation should be made to ensure that equipmen tmovement is within the travel range of the unit . Minor site adjustments may be necessary during thisperiod.
