Design Team creates feel-good printed fabrics, inspired by nature and every-day life
on the African continent. Cotton and linen base cloths are custom dyed to a unique
colour palette and printing is done by hand using flat bed screen printing techniques.
Amanda Haupt and Lise Butler started DesignTeam while completing their Textile
design and Technology degrees in 2000. What started out as a single stand at a trade
show focusing on scatter cushions, grew to a brand that has become recognizable and
loved by South Africans and sold across the globe.
Designs are generated on a continuous basis, often hand painted or drawn and then
rendered for screen exposure. With a varying monthly output of 6000 – 10 000 meters
of printed fabric, we have mastered the art of producing quality hand printed fabric on
a commercial scale, without loosing the authenticity of the hand printing process.
Our large selection of fabric designs is the core of our business, mostly sold to
decorators, interior designers, architects, manufacturers of furniture and bags. New
design collections are launched at least twice a year, with easy to use sample hangers.
All our home ware weight cotton and linen base cloths are custom dyed by a
South African mill to insure a unique colour palette and consistency in quality
and availability. All fabrics are printed to order within a very short lead time,
allowing us to offer a very wide design selection.
With textile printing as our main focus, Design Team developed the boldly
patterned OLKAPOLKA clothing label and it’s toned down, minimalist version
DITTO clothing. The ability to design the fabrics used in these simple garments
resulted in a unique look that is recognizable and has a cult following in South
Africa. Based on the success of these labels and customer demand we also
design and manufacture SILLYBILLY capsule collections for children.
With the launch of our first retail store in 2014 we introduced Design Team as a
lifestyle brand with a wide variety of textile based homeware products, cushions
and accessories.
We believe that textiles are the most widely used and understood design
medium because of its tactile and functional nature. Design Team strives to make
good design accessible with a positive narrative through pattern and colour!
