Both cloth and pastedown of the upper board are heavily stained and puckered. The staining of the prelims reduces rapidly so that early in the text only the fore-edge margins are affected, and this decreases until the stains fade out completely about half way through the book. The gathering of pages up to p.vi is detached. At p.vii, there is c.1” hole in the page due to damp adhesion, losing part of the synopsis of Chapter IX (the synopsis is repeated at p.177). At the back, the free endpaper is partially stuck to the pastedown, and there is some damp staining to the cloth of the lower board. The spine is salvageable but is rather dulled, has a central crease and the ends are showing wear. VOLUME II: Boards discoloured from damp towards the fore-edge. Remains of library label on upper board. Damp adhesion damage to endpapers and small splits at hinges. Staining to corners of initial and final leaves, but body of text is very good. Spine ends frayed, boards firm. Rather a wrecked set, but could benefit from a rebind. Ref.RC/238.

Phrenological Charts, Readings, Posters & Ephemera 330 (Anon). A postcard with serrated edges bearing phrenological Christmas greetings: showing a phrenological head with the various organs cut into flaps which can be lifted to reveal humorous drawings. The head is set against a maroon background and beneath it the following four lines of verse in gold lettering :Herewith I send A HEAD with wondrous BUMPS, Tho' much I trust 'twill not give you the Jumps -With it accept my hopes, in biggest LUMPS, That CHISTMAS JOYS for you will turn up Trumps. The flaps are all present and fit quite tightly closed like jigsaw pieces, some showing a little wear, but that for ‘Tune’ is almost detached and needs repair. There is a narrow 3.5cm pale brown coffee(?) stain below the ear. Written on the back: ‘Arthur (Dr. Pangloss £. s. d. Ass.) from Ben. Christmas 1897.’ Card was evidently formerly stuck down and has papery material adhering to the back. The sort of novelty one would expect to be worn to bits. Generally clean and a surprising survivor. VG-. 331 (Anon). Two undated handwritten phrenological head readings, c. 1910, of:- 1. Miss Blagden, pp. 12, glued at the spine, in hand-titled paper wraps. 2. Mr Tredgett, pp. 12, glued at the spine, in hand-titled paper wraps. Both are fluently written and in good order, though that of Miss Blagden has some soiling and creasing to the covers. VG. 332 Blackburne, J. The Phrenological Sketch of Miss Elworthy by J. Blackburne - Wellington, March 1870. Single plain folded sheet forming 4 quarto sides, handwritten and signed in brown ink in a rather sprawling hand to use all sides: slightly faded, creased and soiled. G+. 333 Brown, Thomas. Phrenological chart and register by Thomas Brown, Practical Phrenologist, Hexham. A phrenological chart for Florence, 29 Aug '72, Morecambe, completed in ink. Loose sheet, 44.5 cm x 28 cm. Fairly clean, with two closed tears and a heavy crease across centre. Edges creased, with some chips, affecting only ruled edges, and partially made good. G. 334 Combe, George.
