RECYCLED GLASS AS A RAW-MATERIAL

PRODUCTION

ISOVER products are high quality glass wool and are manufactured from recycled glass, sand, soda and limestone. The melting of a vitrifiable mix of raw material is accomplishedat a temperature in excess of 1400 oC in the furnace. The meltied glass flows into thefiberizing machine which is a centrifugal spinner. The glass is streched into fibres with anaverage thickness of 6 µ mm - 20 times thinner than a single hair.

The glass wool fibres are bonded using a binder, which is sprayed, during the fiberizingprocess. The products, impregnated with resin, are then taken between two conveyor beltsto a curing oven heated to 250oC. This gives the correct rigidity to the finished insulationmaterial, as well as it´s warm yellow colour.

ISOVER, ECOPHON-AKUSTO and ISOTEC products can easily be faced with various materialssuch as aluminium, glass tissue or fabric, non-woven etc. There are standard dimensionsfor the products but, depending on the volume of the order, the products can also beproduced to customised dimensions.

Saint-Gobain Isover Oy is the biggest userof recycled glass in Finland. The manufactureof ISOVER products plays an important rolein the glass recycling system in Finland.During the last 5 years Saint-Gobain IsoverOy has used over 150.000 tons of recycledglass. In terms of ISOVER-Comfort products, that is equivalent to the insulation used tothermally insulate 165.000 houses. The useof recycled glass as a raw material also reducesthe energy consumption of themanufacturing process. The average contentof recycled glass is over 60 % of raw material.

PACKAGING AND TRANSPORTATION

HIGH QUALITY

HEALTH AND SAFETY

ENERGY CONSERVATION ANDENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION WITHISOVER INSULATION

One of the greatest advantages of lightweightISOVER products is their elasticity in packaging thematerial: ISOVER KT mat can be compressed to 1/4of their original valume and ISOVER KL slabs tohalf of their original volume.Isover has developed a technique for compressingfour packets of ISOVER KL and ISOVER-Comfortslabs into almost one quarter of their original volume.Four packets can now be stacked on a pallet only1.2 metres wide. Four pre-packaged MULTIPACKsper pallet are delivered from the factory – so 8 cubicmetres of ISOVER-Comfort now fit convenientlyonto one MULTIPACK pallet. The pre-packagedpallets are easier to handle and even fit neatly in acar trailer. More building materials can be includedin deliveries leaving the hardware store – producingsavings for both the seller and the buyer. This givesa huge advantage in transportation costs; with rollproducts four times cheaper to transport comparedto the same uncompressed insulation products.

Light weight products are delivered in plasticpackages. Rigid products are packed in shrink-wrapbags or on pallets with a shrink plastic covering.

For the past 50 years the safety of insulation woolhas been studied extensively by governmentalagencies, expert scientific panels and throughindustry sponsored research. These organisationsare International Labour Organisation (ILO), TheInternational Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Basedon this research it can be concluded that insulationwool products are safe to manufacture and usewhen recommended work practises be followed.

The manufacturing process of ISOVER productsincludes many stages; each must be well executedto fulfil the requirements as regards technicalspecifications, installation and usage. Theserequirements are fulfilled by means ofISOVER quality control system, which iscarried out in accordance with skilledpersonnel, high-level technical knowledge, and systematic product and productioncontrol. The high quality of production, design and marketing has beencertified by BVQI according to qualitystandard ISO 9001 and environmentalquality according to standard ISO 14001.

The purpose of thermal insulation is to reduce theconsumption of energy. Insulation also reducespollution caused by the growing energy productionfor buildings and industrial processes. The greenhouse effect is partly caused by theincreasing CO2 content in the air. CO2 is releasedinto the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels forheating. The purpose of thermal insulation is toreduce the consumption of energy. Insulation alsoreduces pollution caused by the growing energyproduction for buildings and industrial processes.

7

ISOVER products do not age, do not distort andthey retain their insulating properties through theyears- well beyond the life expectancy of thebuilding. During the large temperature variationsbetween day and night or between the seasons, especially in a Nordic climate, ISOVER products keeptheir excellent dimensional stability. This is ofimportance in acoustical ceilings and flat roofs.

Owing to its open structure, glass wool offers thebest sound absorption known to-date. It is usedeither unfaced or faced as an element of suspendedceilings (ECOPHON-AKUSTO products). The elastic structure of ISOVER products permit theseparation of the two elements of a double wall, preventing them from vibrating in unison, thusassuring room to room acoustic insulation. The low dynamic stiffness of ISOVER products, offers very good acoustic insulation of the flooragainst impact and air noises when using a floatingfloor system.

Faced products also meet the highest fire safetyrequirements. These properties are characterisedwith special test procedures of ignitability and spreadof fire. Fire behaviour properties of ISOVER productsin building constructions are also tested in largescale fire tests that are run by VTT BuildingTechnology as well as test laboratories abroad. Allthese fire properties, like thermal conductivity, arecertified and have attestation of conformity fromdifferent Certification Bodies. Many CertificationBodies of different countries have also approvedISOVER products: Germany, Russia, Belorus, Ukraine,Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and inshipbuilding: Det Norske Veritas, L'loyds, RIVA andEU/According to shipbuilding Directive.

By increasing the surface temperature, thermalinsulation prevents the risk of noticeablecondensation, dirty paint or pealing wallpaper. Also, insulation prevents the risk of internal moisture inwalls and wood rot. Being rot-proof and odourless,ISOVER products will not sustain vermin. As a non-organic and chemically neutral material, it does notcontain corrosive agents. ISOVER products are alsonon-hygroscope insulation materials. If ISOVERproducts get wet, they will dry out very quickly.Even 90 % relative humidity does not have anyeffect on ISOVER products.

Born of fire, ISOVER glass wool does not fear fire. Most of the unfaced ISOVER products are classifiednon-combustible building materials according to ENISO 1182 test method. Also the same fire behaviourcharacteristics can be met in accordance with testmethods DIN 4102 and GOST 30244-94. ISOVERproducts offer fire safe solution for walls,

roofs and floors in most of the construction types, from small houses to highrise buildings or departmentstores.

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITYInsulation materials are characterised by their thermalresistance. The lower the conductivity, the betterthe insulating product. Isover products are fibrousinsulation materials made exclusively of fibrecomponents. Their high insulation capacity is basedon the static air enclosed by the fibres. ISOVERproducts´ thermal conductivity is very low indeed.

The thermal conductivity of ISOVER productsmeasured in the laboratory according to the ISO8301 standard, ranges between 0.029 and 0.040W/mK while the thermal conductivity of static air is0.026 W/mK. One of the greatest advantages ofISOVER products is the high insulation propertycombined with such a low density compared withany other insulation materials on the market. Designthermal conductivity has been certified in manycountries. Design thermal conductivity is usually10 - 20 % higher than measured value.European standards based on declared thermalconductivity and calculation rules will give moredetail information. Standard is EN ISO 8301.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

FIRE SAFETY

ELASTICITY AND DIMENSIONAL STABILITY

ISOVER PRODUCTS AGAINST NOISE

Thermal insulation is a very efficient way ofdecreasing the need for heating and thus the CO2content in the atmosphere is also reduced. It hasbeen shown in several studies that Europeancountries for example, would be able to reducetheir CO2 emissions by about 50 %, if the nationallegal minimum of thermal insulation requirementswere met by all heated buildings. At the same timelarge reductions could be achieved in sulphuricoxide (SO2) and nitrogen compounds (NO2)emissions among others. This directly affects thevolume of acid rain.

In Finland we have seen that, after the energy crisisin 1974, the improvement of thermal insulationstandards and sealing the houses have reducedthe specific energy consumption by 46 % from 74kWh/m3/a in -74 to 40 kWh/m3/a in -97. Thistranslates into a saving of FIM 5 billion (USD 0.9billion) in annual energy costs and corresponds tothe capacity of four nuclear power plants with atotal output of 2000 MW.

ISOVER KL is a soft, unfaced glass wool board. Theboards are used in structures where the insulationsare not subject to any load. ISOVER KL is most ofteninstalled between wood or steel frames without anyspecial fixing accessories. The main applications arefloors, walls and ceilings. It is also suitable for acousticinsulation, e.g. in partition walls and double wallconstructions.

ISOVER KL-A has about 10 % better thermalinsulation properties than KL of the same thickness.ISOVER-Comfort (KL-C) glaswool board has facingon both sides. Because of the facings, the productis easy and comfortable to handle.

Advantage in transportationThe elastic glass wool products ISOVER KL, KL-E, KL-A and KL-C are highly compressed up to 40 % of itsvolume. ISOVER KL, KL-E and KL-C are also availablein new MULTIPACK-pallets.

ISOVER VARIO retardant in winter, permeable insummer. The vapour permeability of this retarderdepends on the ambient humidity conditions.Because the relative humidity in a building is higherin summer than in winter this property leads toenhanced drying processes during warm periods.VARIO smart vapour retarder works particularlywell with ISOVER insulation in wooden buildingsand especially in RKL structures. It can be usedboth in new buildings and in renovation work. The VARIO smart vapour retarter is mounted likea conventional vapour barrier. The joints are securedwith tape (part of the same family of products). It is not recommended for use in rooms withplumbing, such as bathrooms or saunas, wherethe humidity is permanently above 70%.

VARIO-K SEALING TAPEVARIO-K sealing tape is intended for the airtightmounting of a humidity-equalizing damp-proofmembrane.The minimum delivery is 1 pck (20m).
