Pierre Dubois and Aimé-Cécil share a passion for contemporary art and antiquities. The challenge for these “artisan designers”, as they de� ne

themselves, is to blend creativity with traditional craftsmanship while maintaining a certain idea of “French luxury”. For Roche�Bobois, they

conceive elegant and poetic designs drawn from their knowledge of artisanal practices and their interest in modern materials and colors.

JOSÉLÉVYDesigner, stylist, fashion designer and interior designer. José Lévy is an artist who blurs boundaries and pushes limits. An a� cionado of surrealism, he injects a playful spirit into the formal Haussmann style, creating furniture with moulding details that seem to blend into the walls, a console table that resembles a marble � replace, a table with an innovative parquetry design… each piece plays on conventions and offers a perfect combination of the chic and the quirky.

<JEAN-FRANÇOISMARCHOUA master cabinetmaker and talented draftsman, Jean-François�Marchou also excels in giving an authentic touch of history to the furniture he creates. As an expert in the art of lacquer application, he is also a leading name in the � eld of hand-crafted patinas. Through his knowledge of his working materials, he is a master at bringing out the very best in wood. His work gracefully expresses the notion of time as though embedded in a tree’s memory, so that each piece he crafts has its own individuality.

RUGS

ANTIQUE PATINA: Includes all the techniques used to ‘age’ a piece of furniture. Among these are the ‘chipping’ of the edges, the ‘scratches’, worm holes, stains, dusting, shadowing, etc. The purpose of this complex set of techniques is to give a piece the character of the furniture of the past.

ARMCHAIR: Refers to a seat whose sides are not upholstered between the seat and the armrest.

BEECHWOOD: This pale wood is used for seats. It can be easily sculpted and gives richness to the staining. Highly resistant, it is a perfect material for crafting chairs requiring precise joinery.

BERGERE: Refers to a seat whose sides are upholstered or caned between the seat and the armrest in order to provide greater comfort than an armchair.

BRONZE: This term is used to de� ne all the metal parts in a piece. Bronzes are an essential decorative detailing of furniture decors and are used only on outstanding pieces.

CABRIOLET BACK: Refers to smaller armchairs with a curvy back. They are ideally placed in the center of a room where their elegant back can be seen.

CANING: Since the beginning of the 18th century, thongs of canes (rattan) are strapped on the backs, sides and sometimes seats of chairs. This technique originated in the Flemish region of Belgium, and has remained a popular technique over time. Caning helps to achieve a lighter design and unique comfort.

CHERRY WOOD: Refers to wild cherry trees. Its warm color and � ne grain are widely used in cabinet making.

CHESTNUT: This hard wood with a grain similar to oak is used for the interior of furniture. Its high content in tannins is a natural repellent for insects and worms.

CHIFFONNIER – TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS: Tall chest of � ve drawers, the chiffonier is traditionally used for storing clothes. With seven drawers it becomes a Semainier (from French ‘semaine’, week).

GLOSSARY

COVER: In upholstery it refers to the positioning of the fabric on a seat. It is a critical stage in the upholstering process. Cutting the fabric, aligning and joining the patterns, stretching the fabric all need the attention and experience of a skilled upholsterer.

DECORATIVE DETAILING: Refers to all the elements used to decorate a piece of furniture. Each period and style has its preferred details: � ute and interlacing for Louis XVI. Acanthus leaves, leaf curls and small � owers for Louis XV.

DOVETAIL: A piece of wood in a trapezoid shape used to assemble the front and side parts of a drawer. This traditional technique is a sign of good cabinetmaking and a guarantee that the piece will last.

ESTAMPILLE OR STAMP: Refers to the signature of the cabinet maker, its seal. All pieces of the Nouveaux Classiques collection bear the Roche�Bobois stamp.

FINISH: For case goods, it is a combination of the stain, the antiquing process (patina) and the � nishing varnish (matte, satin or shiny � nish). For upholstery, it refers to choice of technique, nailing or piping, used to hide the seams of the fabric.

HAND-APPLIED SHELLAC: This technique refers to applying shellac with a pad of cotton wool through a repetitive circular movement. The result is a glossy � nish with a remarkable polish. The «À la maniere de…» collection is a tribute to the great cabinetmakers of the 18th century and their extensive use of this technique.

HYDROMETRY: Refers to the level of humidity in the air and is an important factor for furniture crafted in solid wood. Excessive fluctuation in hydrometry may cause the wood to contract and expand. Traditional joinery was designed to give room for wood parts to adjust freely to humidity.

LACQUER: This decorative technique finds its origins in China and Japan but is now used to refer to all paint or patina finishes. Some French regions such as Alsace or Province have a long-standing tradition of using lacquer and patina finishes.

LINDEN: This � nely grained wood allows for a perfectly smooth � nish. It is therefore widely used for painted furniture.

MARQUISE: Wide bergere (one and a half times bigger than a bergere), extremely comfortable.

MORTISE: Refers to the receiving end of the joinery of two solid wood pieces. Its hollow shape holds the tenon and the assembly is secured by one or two wood pegs.

OAK: Considered a noble wood, oak is much appreciated in furniture design for its look and durability. Certain pieces are entirely made of oak, but it can also be used only for the inside of a piece or the sides and bottoms of drawers.

PANEL: A central element on the side or the door of a piece of furniture. Planks or slats are assembled into a frame without the use of glue allowing the inside panel to contract or expand with changing hydrometry.

PIPING: Refers to a technique used to � nish the edges of a seat; piping is an alternative to upholstery nails. It can be simple or double, and its more re� ned aspect is used for the more stylish pieces of upholstery.

QUEEN’S BACK: Named after Louis XV’s wife, it refers to the back of a seat that is wider and more vertical than the usual bergere arm chair. These chairs are often placed against the wall of a room rather than in its center.

ROPE SPRING SUSPENSION: Following the interweaving of the jute straps to the chair structure, the upholsterer sews the springs and sets them with the help of a rope knotted onto each spring. This ensures perfect control on the height of the seating, the type of comfort and the shape of the seat. It requires strength, technique and experience to adapt each seat structure.

SHELLAC: Originally a resin harvested on certain trees in India, it is now a cellulose-based lacquer with the same properties: a subtle shiny � nish comparable to that of waxing wood for centuries.

SLATTED WOOD: A technique to control the contraction of wood panels in dry environments. Solid wood is replaced by panels composed of solid wood slats assembled by alternating the grain. The wood slats are covered on both sides by a thin wood layer called veneer, in which the grain is placed perpendicular to that of the slats. By alternating the grains in this way, it neutralizes the contraction of the wood due to hydrometry.

STAIN: Refers to the ‘color’ applied to raw wood. Unlike paint that is only super� cial, stain goes deep in the � ber of the wood. It is the � rst step in the � nishing process.

TENON: Refers to the protruding end of the joinery of two solid wood pieces. This part locks into the hollow part, known as mortise, the assembly achieved is secured by one or two wood pegs.

TRADITIONAL UPHOLSTERER FILLING: This traditional technique goes back to the 18th century. Springs are sewn to interwoven jute straps, compressed with rope, and then covered with heavy fabric. Horsehair, natural � ber or cotton wool is then added and covered with the upholstery fabric. This traditional technique guarantees an excellent durability and a perfect appearance.

WALNUT: A highly resistant wood, walnut has a very fine grain and smooth finish. I ts darker color and marked veins are used for decorative purpose.
