Last year, Amanda Lee Koe’s Ministry of Moral Panic won the Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction, Oh Yong Hwee and Koh Hong Teng’s Ten Sticks and One Rice took Bronze at the 7th International MANGA Award and Drewscape was shortlisted for an Eisner. These honours for our authors strengthen our conviction that there are more good Singapore stories waiting to be told. Even for the very young. Edmund Lim’s Where Grandma? bagged the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award a year earlier.

So despite the financial pressures, we will not slacken. We will persevere to find and tell the Singapore Story—for everyone from toddlers to adults.

Like Ming Cher’s Big Mole. After 20 years, the sequel to his seminal Spider Boys is finally here. The long-awaited The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew will also be released, here and in the US. Our series of middle grade fiction for boys and girls remain strong. The Diary of Amos Lee, Sherlock Sam, Danger Dan, Girl Overboard! and the Triple Nine Sleuths will continue to hold their own among our schoolchildren.

But we will not ignore the world. Our series of picture books from around the world will add tales from Portugal, Belgium and Norway, plus Jerks Won’t Give You Flowers, a graphic novel from Spain, for the modern girl about town.

Happy reading and thank you for your support.

THE TRAVEL DIARY OF AMOS LEE

SEOUL SEARCHING!Adeline Foo

Everyone was excited about our family holiday to Seoul, South Korea—except me. I knew we’d surely FEUD! And I was right. Dad couldn’t tune out from work. Mum planned to stalk Korean celebs. Whoopie wanted to grow thicker eyelashes, while Everest planned to win a choco pie eating contest. And Grandma kept nagging at Grandpa for being forgetful. I tuned them all out and focused on winning the Instagram Prize for Popular Youth. #FAME! But then Grandpa disappeared in the middle of Everest’s contest, and we had to rally together to track him down.

Danger Dan creates the ultimate Utama uproar in this thrilling series finale! It all started four time-travelling adventures ago and now, Danny and Melody have to go back to the very beginning of Singapore’s history. LESLEY-ANNE AND MONICA LIM are a mother-and-daughter writing team. Monica runs her own writing business and has a blog on education. Lesley-Anne is still in school so she mostly writes essays and papers, which isn’t quite as fun.

The thrilling final episode in the DANGER DAN series!

In her search for a job, an apartment and love, she finds that big city life isn’t all she imagined. With the wealth of new experiences comes an equal wealth of jerks in all shapes and sizes: the Classic Jerk, the Cultural Snob Jerk, the Tough Guy Jerk, the One-Night-Only Jerk, the Jerk Jerk (whose jerk-like behaviour is self aware and premeditated)… it’s a tough world out there. But, armed with two unshakeable girlfriends and a generous dose of gumption, our heroine takes the city on, one jerk at a time.

Worldly yet naïve, jaded yet eternally hopeful, perpetually plugged in yet painfully adrift, the Moderna de Pueblo is an achingly accurate representation of dating in a Millenial’s world. By turns wry, knowing and gently humourous, this graphic novel will be sure to resonate with the young and the restless, navigating relationships, jobs, friends and love in the city.

A wry, sometimes cutting but always light-hearted portrayal of the plight of a modern girl in the city, searching for love but surrounded by jerks.

THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE Sonny Liew

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is a biography showcasing the life and work of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, a pioneering but largely forgotten comic artist in Singapore. With a career spanning more than five decades, from pre-independence Singapore through its three prime ministers, Chan’s work reflects the country’s changing political and economic environment.

Containing Chan’s original illustrations, paintings and sketches, this is a ground-breaking work and labour of love aimed at recapturing the portrait of an artist, whose deep passion for comics and country is given a fitting tribute by Eisner-nominated comic artist Sonny Liew.

SONNY LIEW is a comic artist, painter and illustrator whose work includes titles for DC Vertigo, Marvel Comics, Image Comics and First Second Books. He has received Eisner nominations for his art on Wonderland (Disney), as well as for spearheading Liquid City (Image Comics), a multi-volume comics anthology featuring creators from Southeast Asia. His Malinky Robot series is a Xeric grant recipient and winner of the Best Science Fiction Comic Album Award at the Utopiales SF Festival in Nantes (2009). He received the Singapore National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award in 2010. He lives in Singapore.

Eisner-nominated artist Sonny Liew pays homage to the unjustly overlooked works of local comics pioneer Charlie Chan Hock Chye.

“This book is a joyous, beautiful, million-faceted thing—a celebration of the comic book medium, a technical masterclass, a thrill ride, a bildungs-roman and an unflinching retrospective of the post-war-into-modern era. I love it, and I’m in awe of it.”— Mike Carey, author of Lucifer, The Unwritten

Short stories by Cultural Medallion recipient You Jin, of a Singaporean coping with life in Saudi Arabia.

SANDSTORMS AND SORROW You Jin Translated from the Chinese by Jeremy Tiang

How will a young Singaporean writer with an infant son cope with life in the strange, often hostile, environment of Saudi Arabia, in a time before the Internet and cheap air travel? With her trademark chatty style and wry humour, You Jin chronicles her encounters with bored expat wives, mistreated migrant workers and foreigners who unwittingly fall foul of draconian local laws, as well as her many misadventures negotiating an unfamiliar culture. What strategies will she need to survive life in the desert?

YOU JIN has published more than 150 books in Chinese, including novels, short story collections, travelogues and essays. She is the first recipient of both the Singapore Chinese Literary Award and the Montblanc-NUS Centre for the Arts Literary Award. She has been a schoolteacher for nearly 30 years and received Singapore’s Cultural Medallion in 2009.

JEREMY TIANG won the Golden Point Award in 2009, and has been shortlisted for the Bridport and Iowa Review Prizes. In 2011, he represented Singapore at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program. He has translated six books from the Chinese, and was awarded a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant in 2013.

LOVE’S PILGRIMMohamed Latiff Mohamed Translated from the Malay by Alfian Sa’at

This is the story of a man grieving after the sudden death of his wife in a car accident. Camping out beside her grave, he reminisces about their past together. His memories become increasingly blurred and fragmented, as he grapples with his past as a political detainee and literary activist, and very soon he is unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Mohamed Latiff Mohamed’s novel, hailed as a landmark in modernist Malay fiction, is an unsettling tale of psychic disintegration and obsessive love.

MOHAMED LATIFF MOHAMED is one of the most prolific writers to come after the first generation of writers in the Singapore Malay literary scene. His many accolades include the SEA Write award, the Cultural Medallion and the Singapore Literature Prize. His works revolve around the life and struggles of the Malay community in post-independence Singapore, and have been translated into Chinese, English, German and Korean.

ALFIAN SA’AT is known for his provocative works and is often referred to as Singapore’s enfant terrible. A prolific playwright and poet in both English and Malay, he has won multiple awards for his writing.

A grieving widower remembers his past, and descends into psychosis.

BIG MOLEMing Cher

In the fight for independence, one girl seeks freedom for herself. Born an orphan with an unlucky blemish under her eye, Big Mole is stuck running a fish shop with her roguish boyfriend Hong. When their friend is killed in cold blood on his first day as a secret society gangster, Hong forms a band of brothers and swears ruthless revenge. Big Mole finds herself reeled into a brutal mass murder and tumultuous opposition politics, with the colonial police and local investigators hot on their heels.

This thrilling sequel to the seminal Spider Boys marks Ming Cher’s long-awaited return after two decades. Crackling with the seedy spirit of 1950s Singapore, rife with possibilities, Big Mole will transport and invigorate you as, with the tenacity of an exotic fighting fish, one blemish turns into a beauty spot.

Born in Singapore in 1947, MING CHER was a street boy in the manner of the characters in his critically acclaimed debut novel, Spider Boys (1995), republished by Epigram Books in a new edition in 2012. The 1995 recipient of the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship, Ming Cher has lived in New Zealand since 1977.

A memoir of a childhood spent in the twilight of colonialism in Asia.

THE FALL OF EMPIRE A SCHOOLBOY IN COLONIAL SINGAPORE

David T. K. Wong

David T. K. Wong is a journalist and writer who spent his formative childhood years in Hong Kong, Singapore and Perth. Childhood is, for most, a memorable and idyllic time, but for Wong, it was complicated by his family structure (his father had nine wives), trans-continental moves and the Second World War. This first of three volumes traces his birth in Hong Kong, his boyhood at No. 10 Blair Street in Singapore, and his lean and tumultuous early teens in Perth while escaping from the Japanese Occupation. This is a unique psychological journey of a young man growing up in the twilight of colonialism.

UNCLE ANTHONY’S HOKKIEN RECIPESAnthony Loo Hock Chye and Samantha Lee

Enjoy the rich culinary heritage of the Hokkiens with this slim, elegant cookbook, featuring over 80 authentic family recipes.

Besides Hokkien classics such as braised pork knuckle and bak kut teh, this book features many little-known traditional Hokkien dishes—some even exclusive to the author’s family, such as sticky mee sua soup and Grandma’s stewed chicken in soya sauce.

ANTHONY LOO was born to a quintessentially Hokkien family in Singapore. His grandparents moved to Singapore from Xiamen, China, in the 1920s; it was from them he learnt the many heritage recipes compiled in this book. Growing up amongst the braises and stir-fries of the Hokkien diaspora, Anthony developed a passion for cooking which culminated in hawker businesses—but his greatest joy comes from preparing Hokkien feasts for friends and family.

This book is compiled by Anthony’s niece, Samantha Lee, who is a food writer and cookbook editor.

Uncle Anthony’s Hokkien Recipes is part of Epigram Books’ award-winning Heritage Cookbook series.

SAMANTHA LEE, who compiled the recipes in this book and wrote the introduction, is a food writer and cookbook editor.

NERDBAKEREXTRAORDINARY RECIPES, STORIES & BAKING ADVENTURES FROM A TRUE OVEN GEEK

Chris Tan

Learn things about baking you never knew you needed to know.

You’ve never baked like this before. Chris Tan, food writer, editor, consultant and certified baking nerd, reveals his experiments (triumphant or otherwise) with his oven and the decidedly tasty results. He also kindly lays down, in exacting detail, how to recreate them. Drawing influences from travels, inadvisable one-night-only food orgies and Singapore’s rich heritage, the over 50 recipes range from the historic (e.g. a Dutch-Eurasian breudher) to the esoteric (e.g. an ‘intelligent’ black rice cake). From accounts of meeting Clint Eastwood lookalikes in a Lhasa bakery to heaty tales of a Spam-themed feast; from the fading glory of the pang Susie to making your own mock Pocky—or Mocky—at home, NerdBaker will make sure you never look at your oven the same way again.

WE LOVE CHINATOWN Established by the colonial government to house Chinese immigrants, Chinatown is today a bustling destination. The pre-war shophouses that once housed coolies and opium dens are now occupied by souvenir shops, spas, bars and boutiques. The food stalls on Smith Street pay homage to hawkers of the past, while early malls like People’s Park Complex have been modernised with rooftop gardens.

Designated a conservation area by the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 1989, the multi-ethnic neighbourhood also houses Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple and the prominent Jamae Mosque. We Love Chinatown offers a glimpse into this vibrant neighbourhood through the eyes of the talented artists from Urban Sketchers Singapore.

URBAN SKETCHERS SINGAPORE is an informal group of artists who draw the places they visit, capturing what they see from direct observation on location. Visit www.usk.sg for more details of their sketching sojourns.
