STORAGE UPON ARRIVAL
PLANTING
The use of a plastic pot is preferred.
LIGHT
WATERING
TEMPERATURE
VENTILATION
Force plants is a well-ventilated greenhouse. Do not allow relative humidity to build up.
MARKETING, HARVESTING, AND STORAGE
The Amaryllis should be marketed when the floral stalk in 12”(30 cm) tall. Also, it is desirable to have leaf growth of 6-
12”(15-30 cm) and a second stalk beginning to grow. Do not cold store Amaryllis plants or flowers. If they need to be
held, place them at 50ºF (10ºC). Whenever possible, plants should be marketed with care tags. The consumer should
be informed that Amaryllis should be fertilized 1-2 times per month when it is growing. They can be placed outdoors in
the pot when the danger of frost has passed. To reforce the plants, the should be taken in the home in the fall, allowed
to dry and be stored for at least 8 weeks before cutting of the dried foliage and starting the forcing process. Amaryllis
can also be used as cut flowers. They should be cut when the floral buds are colored, but not yet open. To prevent the
splitting and out rolling of the cut stem, the flowers can be held in 0.125M sucrose for 24 hours at 22ºC (72ºF) before
shipping.
Plants should be forced in a low to medium light (1000-5000 ft.candle) intensity greenhouse. It is possible to start bulbs
in a dark, temperature-controlled area before the bulbs are placed under lighted conditions.
Holland Amaryllis bulbs are available from October until April. The bulbs are generally somewhat irregular in setting
flower buds before Christmas. Consequently, this makes them ideal for retail counter sales but somewhat less desirable
for greenhouse christmas forcing. With this in mind, please stay with the following schedule for greenhouse production
of Amaryllis for Amaryllis for these varieties which are more consistent. Please note that even on these varieties no
guarantee can be given for Christmas flowering. When you send in your order please note that bulbs are to be used for
forcing. Never allow soil temperature after planting to fall below 68F. Keep this in mind especially when watering. As a
rule it takes 4 weeks to flower after shoot emerges.
Bulbs can be stored easily before planting. Use a low humidity, well-ventilated area. Storage temperature should be 55-
60ºF. if the sprouts show, lower the temperature to 41ºF.
Amaryllis must be planted in well-drained, pH 6.0-6.5, sterilized plant medium. NEVER USE FRESH MANURE as part
of the medium. Normally, one bulb is planted per 5½ or 6”(13-15cm) standard pot or 3 smaller bulbs in a 8” pot. Plant
the bulb with the nose slightly above the rim of the pot – about 1/3 of the bulb will be out of the pot.
After planting, water thoroughly. Subsequently, the medium should be kept only slightly moist. It is important not to
over water the plant in order to stimulate regrowth of the basal root system. Us Tepid Water!! Do not water the bulb
nose. Wholesalers/retailers should use tepid water.
Amaryllis are tropical plants and they can be forced over a wide range of temperatures, but 75-80ºF (24-27ºC) is
preferred. Bottom heat should be used. Average forcing time to market state of development is 5-7 weeks. It will vary
with each cultivar and forcing period. It is also important to note that Amaryllis lots are somewhat variable and no
guarantee as to flowering time can be given.

Topflor Dips for Hyacinth Height Control

Given the costs of commercial products and the necessary concentrations for effectiveness, it is likely that Topflor
is the most cost effective of PGRs to use on hyacinths. A starting point for commercial trials would be to dip
hyacinth bulbs into 20 ppm Topflor for 10 minutes. This concentration works well across a number of cultivars
and cooling durations, and should give good results in most cases. A slight (1-2 day) flowering delay might be
observed along with shorter stems and leaves. For very late forcing (long cold durations), a longer dip (30
minutes) would be suggested.
Height control, especially in the postharvest phase remains a potential problem in hyacinth. During forcing,
hyacinths are commonly sprayed with Florel for height control, and to reduce stem floppiness. Rates are
commonly in the range of 1,000-2000 ppm, for 1 or 2 sprays. While generally effective some growers report
problems with Florel sprays, including lack of effect and non-uniformity.
Starting in 2001-2002 we began a program evaluating alternative methods of height control for hyacinth,
including trials with plant growth regulator (PGR) sprays, soil drenches and pre-plat bulb dips. We initially focused
on Sumagic (uniconazole) and Bonzi/Piccolo (paclobutrazol) as the main PGRs, but more recently added Topflor
(flurprimidol). This product has been used in Europe for many years as a general floriculture PGR, and it has
turned out to be an excellent product for use on hyacinths.
To give just one example of this, see the photos of Aiolus from our 2007 research. The photos showAiolus dipped
in 20 ppm Topflor for 0 (untreated controls), 10, 30, 60, or 120 minutes. After dipping, bulbs were planted and
cooled. The first set is bulbs cooled for 15 weeks (housed on 30 Jan); the second set had longer cooling (19.5
weeks) and was housed 5 March. The two photos per set show early in the flowering phase and the second
shows longer term effects.

AVAILABILITY
STORAGE AFTER ARRIVAL
Before planting, rhizomes can be stored up to 4 week at 40-50ºF. Be sure to keep them covered so they do not dry out.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
SOIL
GERMINATION
In order to assure proper germination, start Oxalis Regnelli White at 68-75ºF – Triangularis, Myke, Fanny at 72-78ºF.

HEIGHT CONTROL
The plants grow well in full sun or light shade at temperatures between 70-75ºF. if grown at lower than 65ºF or higher
than 85ºF, the plants may suffer. If flowers bloom down the foliage, the plant has probably been grown with too much
shade. Well-ventilated conditions must be maintained. Once the plants show vigorous growth, the temperature may be
lowered to 65ºF.
Oxalis are almost disease free, but will attract insects in warmer temperatures. The following product is advised for
spider – Pentac 50 wettable powder – 8 ounces per 100 gallons of water, 2 applications per week for two weeks
According to the conclusions of a study on height control by Clemson University, Bonzi drenches proved to be the most
effective of all treatments for suppressing plant height in Oxalis Regnelli and Oxalis Triangularis. Sumagic drenches of
0.10 mg/pot were as effective as the Bonzi treatments in reducing the height of Oxalis Regnelli “pink”. The other
concentrations of Sumagic did reduce the height in both varieties, but their effects were not as noticeable as were the
Bonzi treatments. Based on the experiment, it was determined that A-rest should not be used on these species due to
its costs and inactivity. It was concluded that oxalis growers can use Bonzi drenches in the range of 0.05 to 0.1
mg/41/2“ pot to “stop” further growth once a desired height is reached. This should prove useful for holding crops or
reducing stretch from cloudy weather. Early drenching of Bonzi is to be avoided since this would probably cause severe
stunting and make the crop unsalable
Use a complete NPK fertilizer on a weekly basis once the plants begin to grow vigorously. Either 200 PPM N of 20-20-20
or 14-14-14 Osmocote can be used. If any chlorosis begins to appear in the oldest leaves, use a micronutrient foliage
Plant 3 bulbs per 4” pot or 4 bulbs per 5” pot. Lay the corms (roots) flat and cover with ½” of soil medium. Soil pH
should be 6.5 and no lower.
Recent research has shown that soil mixture as found in Fafard #2 and Metro Mix 350 are best suited – avoid any soil
mix that contains bark.
After planting, water the planting medium thoroughly. Subsequently, only water the medium when it becomes dry
and/or the plants begin to grow vigorously. DO NOT OVERWATER.
Oxalis Cultivation Information(delivery from November - January)
Oxalis Regnelli is commonly known as “Ever blooming Shamrock”. The white variety develops three large, sharply cut,
green leaves and produces a five-petaled white flower approximately one-inch (2½ cm) in diameter. Pink Regnelli
(Triangularis) develops three large, sharply cut, purple leaves and produces a five-petaled pink flower approximately
one-inch (2½ cm) in diameter. Fanny has green foliage with markings on foliage and light pink flowers. Growing
characteristics are similar to Triangularis. Myke is similar in characteristics are similar to Triangularis with more
consistent darker leaf. Oxalis are generally grown from November to May, but can be forced year-round. Plants are
normally ready to market 5-8 weeks after planting. SPECIAL SUMMER GROWING CONDITIONS ARE REQUIRED.
